With a few players gone I think we probably could. McPharlin, Crowley, Duffield, Pav? gone would free up a fair whack of cash.
Duff, Crowley and Lukey Mac all on the veterans list last year. That is 3 x 140K not on the salary cap. Some cap space will be freed up, but not as much as you might think at first glance.

That video of his first goal was the only one I could find with about 30 seconds of effort. We'll definitely need more vids if we get this kid.

hypothetical question: If mcarthy refuses to come back from WA what happens. Do they sack him? They can't force him to come back.

I'd imagine he breaks his contract and sits out for the year. He would then probably have to serve some sort of AFL administered punishment, which being the first of its kind and being a Fremantle player would be a lifetime ban from the AFL. Obviously all subsequent player who do the same will have their penalty capped at 2 weeks wages and limited access to social events run by the AFL.

I would have thought that GWS would sue for breach of contract.

Right now GWS are operating under the assumption that he will at some point realise he has to come home due to his contract. According to Colin Young, McCarthy is not operating under that assumption.

As Colin Young said, there's a lot to play out between now and the end of the trade period.

Buckle up folks. This is going to get bumpy.

I would imagine that he won't be paid and he will not be allowed to play anything but amateur footy. My guess only though

In theory it would be something like that. Nathan Buckley did this to Brissy after he was drafted in 1991 but refused to go, played in the SANFL in 1992 (Not sure how that worked because Crows were in the comp by then), brokered a deal to go to Brisbane in 1993 as long he could be traded at the end of that year.

For two first rounders we better win a premiership in the next 5 years otherwise it's may be ugly.

In 2009 our first pick was Morabito
In 2010 our first round pick was Jayden Pitt
In 2011 our first rounder was Tommy Sheridan
In 2012 our first round pick was Josh Simpson

It's probable that McCarthy and Bennell will play more footy over the next 5 years than those 4 combined. And despite 3 of those players having no impact we played in a GF in 2013 and finished top of the ladder this year.

Or perhaps not having those 3, cost us a genuine chance at the flag.

This year we really needed that extra bit of talent and class to get into a GF but lacked it.

people grossly over rate first round picks.

A pick in the teens is a 50% proposition. Thats why *two* picks is roughly equivalent to a relatively known quantity of Mccarthy.

I think the deal will get done.
