Game Day 2024 Trade Period - Lian Yu - that liminal space between trade and draft.

He needs to play some WAFL before we make any comments. Personally I’ve never seen him kick an Aussie rules ball and I certainly haven’t seen him play a game of Aussie Rules. He’ll likely start in the WAFL reserves and progress from there.
Geez I’d love to get some serious Irish mettle into this team though. The blokes are harder than a double reinforced cats head.

Thinking given his age, hes only coming if they think hes a plug and play option. Be interesting to see if he happens, and if so, their plans for him👍

Still certain he’ll kick off from reserves but he may well be fast tracked to league and who knows from there. Seems to be in a battle for the last Cat-B spot with Eoin McElholm. Kelm turns 25 on 14 December 2024.

Does that ruin Curtis Taylor's chances now

Not sure if this has been picked up anywhere, but Karl Worner's getting promoted from the rookie list to the senior list.

EDIT: nvm, DragoDelph had the scoop.

He's been practising with a Burley.

Incredibly strange given they are demoting Knobel from the main list and thus creating a FA for life to accommodate this promotion for Worner.
Wagner is already on the main list as he was a ND draftee not a rookie.
For the life of me I cant understand it.

In the past iirc you could only have someone on rookie list for 4x years, so in that case we would have had to upgrade Worner to main list.
Except now the rule has been changed so you can keep a player for a 5th year on rookie list as long as they have played less than 10 games (Worner qualifies for this exemption)

I like Worner, dont get me wrong. But ultimately I see him as an inbetweener. Too good for WAFL, not quite AFL level.
Knobel on the other hand is going to be a very very good AFL starting ruckman in a few years. I rate him highly

I dont understand the logic behind this move and seems incredibly short sighted to me.

Worner was given a contract before the new rules were put in place. He signed and we signed and as there's every intention of him being on our list next year we won't be breaking it.

The assumption I'm making is that we guaranteed we would upgrade but even if we didn't it was implied by offering him that contract.

The new rules won't change too much given the games criteria. Watch out for Liam Reidy (assuming we re-contract him) next year. Draper, Sharp (2026) and probably Voss (2026) will have most played too many games by the time they've done their third year. If we draft Narkle through SSP he's not lasting three years unless he plays too many games anyway.

Moving worner to the rookie list is a brain dead move if we are only signing knobel for one year tbh (if we are winging him multiple to the RL then that has some merit)

IDC if we had agreed to move him before the rules changed, gotta be flexible
His contract extension was last year (2023). There was no reason to be flexible at that stage.

The rules came in this year

Flexibility wasn't an option last year

Now it is

Other teams have done it, we easily could've

If we sign knobel for 2 on the rookie list then my complaint goes away but I doubt that happens

We did the contract extension under the previous rules and haven't deviated from the contract agreed between two parties. I have no problem with what we've done for Worner unless you think we shouldn't have re-signed him which IMO is a different discussion.

I don't see how not upgrading Worner would be much different to delisting a contracted player. The club can't just change their mind when the contract is already signed.

We shouldn't be delisting and redrafting Knobel though. There's others we should've delisted and redrafted first. If they're contracted for 2025 it doesn't really matter.

Your final paragraph goes completely against the rest of your post

Keeping worner on the rookie list is doing the same thing but with 1 less step (not needing to delist and pickup in the rookie draft)

I just think Knobel was considered the best move compared to anybody else. Maybe they think he needs to be doing more in certain areas to make it and this is the message to get him to do it or he's cut.

Worner has shown more at becoming an AFL player and earned his promotion above Knobel.

There might be circumstances that we also don't know regarding managers and signing agreements that prevent us from moving other players to the Rookie list.

It really isn't a big deal. If Knobel is out of contract, life time FA isn't going to stop him moving anyway.

It might make it easier for him to move since it's just a money thing - and his age will mean we might get a compensation pick greater than a trade would.

But, if he is good enough there's no way we can keep him without either losing Darcy or Jackson plays midfield.
