Cam is getting a heap of discussion and given it is reported he is out of contract (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...th-magpies-20120927-26na1.html?skin=text-only) then the question is does he stay or go;

Those who support him staying argue it would be stupid to not have an experienced back up to Jolly who we know cannot play 23+ games a year.

Those who suggest its time to go say its clear coaching panel lost some faith and it is time to give Witts a turn. He is 20 and he has done very well at VFL level.

Am sure others have more arguments for or against but in a nutshell thats it.

Clearly if the Age is wrong then he will be staying bc I cannot imagine us sacking him or trading him (latter for a variety of reasons) so if he is contracted he stays.

Alright posters go to it....................

Although Cam has been disappointing, he is probably not as bad as many posters seem to believe. While I doubt he will ever reach a high level he provides a back up to the aging Jolly. Witts and Ceglar should get some gametime but are not yet ready to ruck for a full AFL game.

Unless the club has another mature ruckman like Seaby in mind for the back up role Wood should be kept for another year.

I've voted to keep him, but there are a couple of proviso's.

1. Only if he's contracted. I don't like the idea of paying him out. If he's getting paid, keep him if only in the role of Travs stable pony (and emergency backup for Jolly)
2. Only if we can't manage to pick up a 25-28yr old bigger bodied replacement.

If he is contracted (which i believe he is) keep him til the end of 2013.

he proved in 2011 he could play a adequate level if given a few games in a row

he was thrown to the wolves against the eagles. Its a pretty rough gig going up against the 2 AA ruckman when you have just spent 5 weeks in the VFL

We need some back-up plan if Jolly gets a long-term injury. At the moment, simply put there are no better options out there.....

If he's contracted and we don't have any interest in him, then he'll stay.

If he's not contracted, I suspect we are waiting to see how we go through trade week and the draft before making a final decision. Must be hanging on by the minutest of threads. If he is re-signed, would want to be on one year at the barest wage.

A 20 year old with no senior experience is not a back up ruckman for a premiership contender. Its Cam Wood or trade for someone better.

Given our history in drafting/developing ruckmen, and the number of potential ruckmen we have on the list, it doesn't make sense to trade for a developing talent. So I'd hope we'd only trade to get an experienced senior ruckman whose performance we can accurately predict.

We have managed so far with Cam, can't see him getting any worse. Give Witts and Co another year under their belts before we ditch him and trade or go with what we have.

Could Cam shock us all and turn a corner? Just wondering if there are any precedents for a 25year old 2nd's level ruckman to suddenly break out?

Wood is like the late night movie you watch as a 15 year old, a hint of tit so you stay up a bit longer. But how long can we wait before we're caught with our pants down?

If he's not contracted, I don't know why we wouldn't fish around for someone like Martin. Maybe there just isn't any rucks we rate cheap. That's eminently possible.

I would retain him. We've persisted with him thus far and if he still has another year on the contract all the more reason to keep him. What happens if Jolly goes down? I haven't seen that much of Witts/Ceglar but from what I can gather they're not ready for a full season in the ones.
Sure his effort is piss weak but who else have we got? You never know he could turn it around completely next season... (I've been hoping for this for the past few years -.-)
I would only trade him if we there is another club interested and we can pick up Seaby or the like for free.

If we going to run with that analogy then I suggest half the neighbourhood is already taking turns peeping through the window and laughing their heads off over our pick 14.

I would sooner delist him and play an additional midfielder in the centre if needed.

IMV virtually any half-decent VFL standard ruckman would be comparable, but cheaper and provide a physical contest.

Ask Clokey to dangle some of his $$$ as a match payment incentive for 2013.
Bonuses for hard work - strong body use, contested marks, gut running to get to contests, tackling & intimidation.
Would love to see Wood turn into a 'Charlie' Manson & give everything he has & then some for 2013.

Well I'd only delist him if I knew we could get someone that is at least better/competitive. Haven't seen Witts or Ceglar play but from what I heard they are still a bit raw. I say have a crack at Seaby, he couldn't be worse and surely he wouldn't cost too much.

probably the best analogy i've ever read that accurately describes a footballer...hats off spice

Move him on. Has regressed every season since 2009 and has been passed by with Ceglar and Witts both showing more at VFL level last season.

I'd much rather see Ceglar and Witts receive more ruck minutes at VFL level to give them both more opportunities to develop.

If that's the problem, I don't much like the solution. You might be a booster of Ceglar and Witts, but anyone I respect who has seen the VFL team don't see Ceglar or Witts as any type of ready-made replacements.
