Hawthorn defender Campbell Brown has been fined $15,000, with half of the amount suspended, for misleading the AFL Tribunal.
Brown admitted in a television interview on Monday that he had lied to the tribunal earlier this year in an effort to have West Coast captain Chris Judd cleared of an eye-gouging charge.
AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said the integrity of the tribunal system was vital.
Brown's apology was taken into account before the penalty was decided upon.
Anderson said he accepted Hawthorn's submission that the matter should be dealt with by the AFL, under its rules, rather than being referred back to the tribunal.
"The AFL investigators are also satisfied the West Coast Eagles Football Club was not complicit in the beach and we are happy to add this to the other issues we have swept under the carpet for them," said Anderson.
Brown has been fined $7,500, with a further $7,500 suspended.

Nah, they don't pay free kicks against him when he gets caught and disposes by throwing the ball out in front and appealing for holding the man in fact they give him the free even though he threw it so why would they hold him accountable for also lieing, given that they have decreed Brown lied, they have also said Judd lied because Judd's evidence back Brown's evidence.
Sh*t Gomez is one of the biggest liars (though he thinks he is a politician and will call it spin) and his pal Angry is no better and they gave out the fine.
You know what Brown is really paying for, it's his comments that he was interviewed on a Saturday and asked about being drug tested and he said no but 'amazingly' they 'just happened to turn up the Monday after (same as Brent Harvey) even though Gomez says it's random, which he mentioned. It showed the AFL drug testing is an embarassment and not random which it purports to be. It's done on the whim of the AFL based on publicity.
But Mike Sheehan was too stupid to make that the real story... then again the Herals Sun have to pay 'collateral to the AFL' I guess ignoring the AFL's joke of a drug policy is one of those payments.

he should have been fined and suspended - just to fine someone for lying isnt enough
The police must be great mindreaders. How would they know the crimes been committed unless someone informs them
Perhaps witnesses other than the victim themselves could inform the police?
Then there's also the fact that in countries where a victim may be able to decide not to press charges, they could have had a change of heart after going to the police.
The only times your claim holds water in australia is in relation to sexual assault and rape cases.
Yeah it's a joke isn't it? West Coast must be the luckiest most protected team in the AFL.
