Brownlow Can The Bont Bring Charlie Home

The problem with medals like this and coaches trophy, not that they are bad, it's just mostly midfielders reward. Bring back Wynd.
It used to be different. Many decades ago there was 1 person voting rather than a committee of 3 and votes weren't disclosed match by match, so individual votes weren't so heavily scrutinised.

Committees and relentless scrutiny will lead to safe choices - the guys who got heaps of touches.

Used to lead to much less predictable results. Back pockets (Hardie), flankers (Murray), key forwards (Templeton, Quinlan, Lockett), wingers (Dipper), Rucks (Dempsey, Moore, Round, Thompson, Stynes,Wynd, Moss) - everyone had a shot.

A few times over several seasons (many years ago), I was in the umpires rooms immediately after games, while votes were discussed and allocated (late 80s/early 90s). One game, let's call it round 5, 1990, between the 6 officiating umpires there were at least another half dozen friends/family in there. By chance I was closest to the 2 fieldies as votes were discussed, written down, then sealed in the envelope. (Probably outing myself here to anyone else on here who had a similar involvement.) Liber Snr was clearly BOG, and with virtually no discussion got 3 votes. They then tossed up about 4-5 names for the 2 and 1 votes. No stats were considered or discussed. Because we started slow but ran over Carlton, a lot of our players sacrificed their game to put bodies on the line, bullock and shepherd, 1%ers, etc.
In the end, Galaxy Coleman and Steve Wallis got 2 and 1. As a supporter during the game, I thought they were in our best. Coleman was crunching packs all second half, opening up space on our forward line, Wallis tagged Bradley out of the game. Coleman had 15 disposals, Wallis had 8. There were plenty of players on both sides with more stats, but the umps back then (only 2 in 1990) were aware enough to see which players impacted the overall contest.
Of course, in 1990, the myriad rule tweaks added in recent years didn't exist, the umps actually had respectful banter with most players, and they could focus on applying rules with less grey interpretation, and look past accumulators.
In 2021, Keath could hold Harry McKay to zero possessions, and would be lucky to get a mention in the best players. Such is the evolution of the media/umpire/casual fan focus. Oh well.

Given that the award is so heavily skewed in favour of accumulators, it’s insane that Macrae isn’t in the conversation.

Unfortunate side effect of having Bont in your team. Difficult to win when your teammate is collecting three votes every second game.

If he kicked a few more goals he’d be right up there every year.

What are you wearing for tonight's Brownlow?

I'm wearing a Target black long sleeved skivvy with black, grey and white plaid Croft and Barrow sleep pants from Kohl's (USA). I'm also wearing red non-slip hospital socks from Epworth of Camberwell.

Hey team any idea how to stream the coverage? I’m on the 7+ app but can’t get anything other than border security show and Batman.

I don’t have a regular TV connection just WiFi.

It's TV or nothing, sadly.

I hope that's the lucky outfit!
