Hot Topic Carlton 2024 Trade Discussion

Remove this Banner Ad

Here we go ladies and gentlemen. A dedicated thread to take some of the heat off the Bluemour Discussion thread and the List Management thread.

The key dates for this period are:

Free Agency Window - Friday 4th October until Friday 11th October
Trade Period - Monday 7th October until Wednesday 16th October

Trade rumours can still be posted in the Bluemour No Discussion thread, and discussed in here.

We'll keep tabs on the trade talk that has come from the clubs, the AFL and the AFL mainstream media at large.

For now, this is a list of potential trades involving Carlton picks, players going out or players coming in. Please get me to add to the list if there are any credible ones I need to add to the list, and we will see how we end up at the end.

1. Matt Owies (Carlton)- out of contract, told to explore his options, has met with Brisbane

2. Matt Kennedy (Carlton) - contracted, told to explore his options

3. Lewis Young (Carlton) - contracted, told to explore his options

4. Dan Houston (Port Adelaide) - contracted, wants to return to Victoria. Carlton and North believed to be frontrunners.

5. Nick Haynes (GWS) - Unrestricted free agent. Set to leave for more game time. Carlton the only club mentioned. Won't cost any draft currency.

6. Christian Petracca (Melbourne) - Contracted. Disgrunted with his club. Linked to Carlton primarily. Has returned to Melbourne but some doubt remains

7. Carlton's future first rounder for Gold Coast's Pick 12 - Reported by the media as Carlton want to use their first rounder this year in the draft, and want this pick to pay for Houston

8. Leek Aleer (GWS) - Contracted. Reported that Carlton are interested, but also reported that the Giants will keep him for next year at least.

Which ones can we get done? What will we get for outgoing players? What will we pay for incoming players?

Going to throw up a hypothetical. Port wants Lukosius, Gold Coast wants to move one of their 1sts into next year and some points for Lombard, we're into Houston apparently...

Port get Lukosius, 20, 46; give Houston and 36.
Gold Coast get Carlton's F1, 31, 35*, 36, 62; give Lukosius, 20, 26.
Carlton get Houston, 26; give F1, 31 and 35* (*Owies trade).

A little convoluted with all the picks, but value wise:
  • Port get Lukosius and pick 20, slide 36 back to 46. This roughly equates to two late firsts for Houston.
  • Gold Coast moves their last first-rounder (norf end of 1st round compo) into next year, pick up 1700 points to match bids (equiv of pick 6) and loses Lukosius and 2 picks that would get swallowed up by the Lombard bid.
  • We get Houston, and an upgrade on pick 31, giving up our F1 and whatever we get for owies, and we keep pick 11 for this year.
I'm not saying this is likely, but it would make sense given where players look to be going. It's why we're happy for Owies (and Kennedy) to explore his option's because it gives us just that little bit more capital to make a deal happen while still being in a meaty part of this year's draft. I'd love to see us get even more ambitious and try to reach for Gold Coast's pick 12, as that's probably just outside where Lombard will be, but it's probably a bit of a stretch.

Dan Houston - Trade - Port -> VIC club
(North, Carl, StK)
Nick Haynes - FA - GWS -> Carl
Elliott Himmelburg - FA - Adel -> GCS
Jack Martin - DFA - Carl -> Geel

Rumours:

Luke Parker - Syd -> North. North want to add experienced bodies, as of 25/9, Parker more likely to stay a Swan

Dustin Martin - Rich -> GCS. Met with Dimma and GCS, Hardwick spoke last 48 hours about how much Dustin needs to fit life on the GC but also is he the right fit team and list wise - questions put to Dusty.

Jayden Laverde - Ess -> StK. A year to run on his deal, Carl, Pies, Cats also all been linked.

Matt Owies - Carl -> Bris, GCS, WCE. Reportedly has been offered a 2 yr deal, but also club happy to see him field offers as club looks at re-jigging list. Midweek tackle saying he has met with Suns and Eagles. Twomey saying Brisbane have interest

Matt Kennedy - Carl -> Told to explore options from exit interview if wanting more midfield time.

Lewis Young - Carl -> Told to explore options from exit interview.

Jack Carroll - Carl -> WCE. Been interest and rumours for a while, WA boy, Eagles been main suitor

Finn Maginness - Haw -> Ess. Riley Beveridge has stated Bombers have identified him as a target maybe, want outside run

Josh Rotham - WCE -> Ess. Depends on Laverde maybe, will be a UFA and can move at his discretion. Twomey flagged interest.

Xavier O’Halloran - GWS -> WB. Dogs after Peatling and O’Halloran. Has 1 year left on deal. Grandfather was a Dogs premiership player. Looking at him.

Tom Clurey - Port -> WCE. Depends on new coach, interest has been flagged.

Riley Garcia - WB -> WCE, North. 2 year deal from Dogs. WCE happy to maybe out price to bring him back to WA.

Joe Richards - Coll -> Port. Considering a move to Alberton.

Caleb Daniel - WB -> North. Mitch Cleary stating North into Daniel and he will look to meet with more clubs.

Jack Graham - Rich -> WCE. Has a 4 year deal from WC. Reported a end of 2nd rounder could be compensation for Tigs.

Adam Tomlinson - Melb -> StK, Coll. Frustrated at lack of senior opportunities. Saints and Pies reportedly interested.

Tom Campbell - StK -> Melb. DFA free to join Dees.

Ollie Lord - Port -> Coll, Melb. Both enquired. Pies in the market for a forward, Dees long term admirers. Cats made a surprise charge last trade period.

James Peatling - GWS -> Multitude of interested clubs. GWS have 3 year deal in front of him. Undecided.

Port is going to be a fascinating watch with all of the businesss mooted.

Free agents Cumming and Perryman won’t be cheap. Thinking if they get either they will eat up any salary cap saved by trading Houston.

Clearly in the market for a small forward option or two Joe Richards in the mix

Lukosius is the dramatic one. Back ended deals rumoured to have him due for $1.9million in 2025. Even if the Gold Coast paid half, still equates to a million close enough.

They are going to NEED Houston off their books and may not be able to dictate to the “winning” suitor on trade value

Peatling is still rumoured, hasn’t yet declined GWS’s offer, has he?

Himmelberg is a FA too.

Houston is on unders isn’t he (prob another reason wishing to depart), so outgoing wages will be eaten up & then some.

Seemingly Crows are leading the race for Cumming & Perryman is going to be very overpaid wherever he ends up with a long tenure.

3 way:

GCS: Recieve Pick 11
Port: Recieves Lukosius
Carlton: Recieves Houston and Rosas Jnr

What extra pieces would even up this trade

Lukosius would only be worth a second rounder now and Rosas not even a third rounder so GCS are getting too much there and Port too little.

Plus sounds like Carlton intends to hold onto Pick 11 so will be using other picks to get Houston in (our second, future first, what we get for Kennedy, Owies etc)

Houston is worth a late first rounder so we have to ensure we are offering enough compared to what North could offer (doesn’t have to be better but close enough) - which would probably be an exchange of future firsts
