Gee you're under rating George Hewett.

Billings, Gresham and Hill - meh.

Gresham had one brief purple patch.

Hill a shadow of his former self.

Bilings? Meh.
Hewitts a brilliant pickup for us but not many clubs wouldn’t have an equal or better fourth mid. He’s an ok player that our club desperately needs.
Gresham has just been unlucky with injuries. Looked a certain A grader in his first 3 seasons. 18 touches a game and 35 goals in his third year.
Hill and Billings are class we don’t have off a wing

Let's not base list management on the basis of a player might grow, get quicker, etc. Yes, he may have grown, but right now he is a 3rd tall.

As for this leap thing, I have seen the same thing with Gov, when discussing him as a KPD. Image the King boys having the same vertical leap, the difference in height would remain the same.

What makes Weitering able to play on the bigger forwards is his positioning, body work, before and during the contest, same as May. On the other hand, Jones used his speed/leap, but he was 199, not 192
Akuei now listed as 194cm but I agree he’s not anywhere near KP size and he is very raw, over the 7 games he played at NAB league he only managed 9 marks so he’s got a lot of work to do before he will even be considered for the 3rd tall role ahead of Marchy, Kemp, McGovern etc let alone a KP slot.

OK, i'll play a bit.

Who's the Saints 4th best mid? Bombers? Freo? Even WCE in 2021? What about Sydney? Brisbane? Even the Dees - after Oliver, Petracca, Brayshaw, who's next?

Gresham, for sure, looked very likely, but....14 games in 2 seasons now....we'll see.

Hill? Again, a shadow of his former self. Now 29 odd? Can he be a force again? I doubt it.

Third club, 10 seasons in.....is he still hungry enough? (i don't know)

Like Hill, Billings had a good 2019, since then MIA.

Hill was class, don't think Billings ever was - but each to their own.

Totally agree about Hewett, as he is a real honest player that gives everything for his team and thrives on beating his opponent. In my opinion he was the Swans best in their 1 point loss to GWS in the elimination final this year, and busted a gut trying to get his team across the line!!! No frills at all but he is a junk yard dog type!!! I wouldn`t mind Gresham at Carlton as I think he has been held back by injury, but has some real pace and talent in my book.

If there's any one trait we need more of at our club, it's definitely junk yard dog.

We've been perceived (and rightly so) as a "nice" team for way too long.

saints couldnt even give billings away, no one was interested in him. Swans mostly used hewett as a defensive mid. Maybe if he was a 30disposal mid with 20% disposal efficiency youd rate him higher? Hill had a pretty average year, has one way of play and if he doesnt get it hes a liability. clubs might have a better 4th mid but they probably dont have anyone remotely close defensively. 13 tackles in their elim final 19 possessions 12 contested and hes a regular performer

Agree 100%. I am not certain the kid has what it takes, but his performances are certainly in the ball park when his Western Australian peers are considered. He has shown the determination to overcome adversity to put himself in the mix. Granted he does not exude pace in his highlights, but gets around and too contests. Also appeared to gain separation on the lead. It is possible to look slow when in fact you are not. Sean Darcy arguably the best young ruck in the competition looks very similar “athletically”, yet gets to contest after contest.

Having overcome an ACL reco and battling shin splints through his abbreviated season after little preparation, the lad has earned a chance for mine. There is little doubt a significantly better season can be expected in 2022. He put up some quality performances during the season, if they are improved upon as expected he is well worth the investment. Being an SSP placement, having big brother on hand for support during a “trial season” would be a excellent scenario.

There is little doubt in my mind a forward/ruck is a greater need for balance than nabbing an underdone KPD prospect.
We have Kemp, Parks and Akuei to add to defensive talls like Lewis Young and Oscar McDonald who has recovered from an LTI as hopefully will have elite interceptor Marchbank very early in the season. With McGovern and potentially JSOS options as defensive talls, we are not bereft down back.

While a swingman, Young clearly has displayed better form in defence. With Harry, Charlie and TDK all likely to be in the top team for the foreseeable future that leaves only McDonald as genuine key forward depth. Again with Harry, Charlie and TDK all having expectation for the best part of eight years tenure in the top team, it is not essential to hunt the next gun key forward yet. A competitive player capable of developing as an option as both forward and ruck makes great sense to me. It provides our developing players with a balanced structure in the twos to “mimic” the senior game plan.
Your last line is the really important part for mine and where we have suffered not having any developing talls, playing Crocker as the de facto full forward with Wooller as the other tall doesn’t give us a great like for like system at VFL level and that’s without delving into our back half which was seriously undermanned for KP players.

Need to at least have a similar structure for our VFL players to learn the system before stepping up which after all was why we went out on our own in the first place, in saying that I think O’Keefe, Power and co did an exceptionally good job in getting our development heading in the right direction finally, wonders never cease.

Listed heights unfortunately count for very little as it's pretty standard practice for a players actual height to be padded out by a few cm's.
IMO it's in term of gamestyle, positioning etc that the likes of Young or Akuei face the largest adjustment with regard to making it as a KPD.

Yes Cripps is also a B grader then, C Curnow a C grader etc.
Bombers is probably McGrath
Dees Viney
Freo Mundy or Serong
Brisbane Zorko
Sydney either Heeney when he plays there or maybe Florent or one of their kids. Actually probably Rowbottom.
West Coast I guess Redden.
st Kilda maybe Jones

Firstly he is a brilliant pick up for us. Secondly I’m not sure why you bring up his tackling, he isn’t in the top 100 in the league for it and about 250% less then the best. His sides success coincided with him being moved away from the coal face and into a lesser more outside role.

Another Cripps: Superstar’s brother given Blues chance
Overlooked for the second successive year, the brother of Carlton skipper Patrick Cripps has been given an opportunity by the Blues

Around 3 years off even being considered imo

For a key position post you're probably right. But there's no reason why he can't play senior footy sooner than that.

We said similarly of JSOS who when he joined the club looked years off senior footy yet he played a handful of games in his first season.

Let's see how he adapts to the level. It's not as though he's a newcomer to footy.

Agreed. We have ourselves an athlete who is a low cost high risk high reward potentially. 2.95sec in the 20 metre sprint for his height is pretty impressive I might add. His attitude and work ethics will have a big say in whether he makes it

Who are the train on players we are looking at other then cripps

CARLTON has invited Eastern Ranges draft prospect Tyreece Leiu to train with the club as part of its pre-season supplemental period program in a bid to win a spot on the list.

The tall defender will be joined in Carlton’s pre-season training by Josh Cripps, the younger brother of Blues co-captain Patrick, with both players overlooked at last week's drafts but hopeful of claiming a spot on the club’s rookie list.

Ive seen a few people dropping Hagan down, he's been a class above his peers for years. May have developed early, but he's a gun.

I really rate Hagan, really good balanced player, composed, but with height at 176, hopefully he grows a bit more. That might be difficult given his dad is around 170

At this stage, still a 1st rounder

Tyreece Leiu (194/93) started season 2021 at the centre bounces, rotating forward as usual before finding an unlikely home in defence, where his intercept ability was unearthed. With all three lines covered across his junior career, the big bodied 18-year-old is a versatile talent who provides strength at the contest and has adjusted well to different roles thus far. Having been part of Vic Metro’s undefeated Under 16 side, he was set to done the Big V again this year but missed due to injury.

Coming into the year, Leiu was expected to be a handy point of difference in Eastern’s midfield, feeding the classy movers to the outer. Having done some nice things up forward before finding a home in defence, he has gone on to prove his versatility and find new ways to impact games. Which role suits him best in the eye of recruiters may impact his draft range, but he would be a handy pick in the third or fourth rounds.

This was the strange bit:

A strong-bodied inside midfielder capable of providing marking presence at either end of the ground, with sound reading of the play and clean hands.
