For what it's worth I think these clubs would be mad not to trade for Gardiner.

What would he be worth - maybe a 3rd round pick at best - so pick 35 or maybe pick 51.

So using a lousy pick to get him then allows them to snag a player of higher quality in the PSD.

For example - if the blues want to retain Thornton, knowing he is eligible for the PSD - they could acquire Gardy really cheaply and then use their 1st pick in the PSD to retain Thornton.

Alternatively, if the bombers wanted to attract say Steve Johnson from Geelong who would be a 2nd round pick, they could snag him for free in the PSD and only have to pay a 3rd or 4th rnd pick for Gardiner.

just a thought, becuase people expect gardy to go in the PSD - but it makes sense to snag the expensive players in the PSD and get Gardy for next to nicks via trade

Don't want Gardiner anywhere near Windy Hill - end of.

i appreciate that and respect your sentiments - I don't want him at WCE either.

however we don't have a say in the matter

IF carlton or essendon wanted him I think my logic is sound. Get the expensive player for free and trade for the cheap one.

Pick 51 wouldn't be that much to pay

I beg to differ Sharpie.

Given the depth of this years draft, there's a reasonable chance that there'll still be some quality left in the latter stages. Therefore, I'd much rather 'buy a lottery ticket' and take a chance, than waste it on anyone with Gardiner's 'pedigree' or well documented injury problems. :)

Understand your logic though.

Don't need him, don't want him. We have Hille who is better than Gardiner anyway.

Too many Commodores for him to damage at Windy Hill.........

Talented but way too much baggage, besides can he even ruck anymore with his knee problems?

You wouldn't trade for a player anyway who'll probably be left for a late pick in the National draft anyway.

he is rucking again - and in fact was dominating the WAFL

The commentators were saying that in his latter games with Claremont that he was dominating the game more than they can remember anyone in recent times.

he does have injury problems though - and in the finals at qtr time he had something like 3 goals and 15 hit outs - however he hurt his groin and came off.

he does have baggage - but a club like Carlton doesn't really have any better options in the ruck at the minute

I can't see Carlton taking another troubled player as it hasn't worked in the past and Sheedy probably won't bother again after the Zantuck incident. Kangaroos have plenty of developing rucks and Port don't need him either. Brisbane could be a possibility working in tandem with Charman? Keating has been axed and McDonald may be going too.

Essendon now have Laycock, Hille, Ryder, McKinnon signed on for next season.

plus Carts and Bradley waiting on new contracts. We're pretty right on ruckman at the moment.

Interesting dilemma Gardiner offers the football world. I will obviously come and clean and say I do hope the Eagles get something for him personally.

The logic of the original post is quite sound on the assumption that either club does want Gardiner as well as a player with a higher market value. Take Gardiner while his value is low and the Eagles likely expect to get nothing for him (begrudgingly), and save their first pick in the PSD to grab the higer rated player they want.

What is he worth in a trade? That is the dilemma...we are talking about a former #1 pick who was AA 3 years ago and is still only 27 which for a ruckman isn't too bad. It's only 24 hours since the WB were rejoicing at picking up a 29y.o midfielder with a big mouth. Totally different to criminal behaviour of course, but are the two risks that monumentally far apart that Aker is worth a rumoured second round pick and Gardiner is worth anything from 4th round to 'don't want him near my club'?

My guess is (and this is not to pump up his value as no one in high places cares what I think) Gardiner will leave Perth and be all the better for it, and offer 4 - 5 years of damn good service to someone. In fact if it wasn't for the Eagles now having Dean Cox, I'd be seriously concerned about Gardiner coming back and biting us BIG time with anew club. He is at his peak age for a big man, DID play in the ruck when he played WAFL this year as well as kicking a bag in one game.

Don't think Gardiner will be playing AFL next year, there is more baggage there than what is reported in the media, and deservedly so.

Agree.

He will go from the AFL to underworld crime full time. Probably make more money too. At least in crime he can drink drive as he pleases as the cops are prolly paid off.

Wouldn't trade for him as bombers aren't exactly challenging atm and while i think he can still be a very good footballer i'd rather stick with Hille and Laycock, with Ryder coming up as well. Surprised Carlton don't want him, caus they have bugger all in the ruck and as said earlier he could still give them 5 years.

im sick of people saying that essendon need mroe rucks and better rucks when in reaity we dont, although our rucks may not be dominating they are all still very young, people must realise that our oldes ruck is only 25 and our back up is only 21 plus ryder who is only 18. the reality is essendon have one of the youngest ruck combinations in the comp atm and the reason they arent dominating now is becaus ethey still have alot of development left to do ( except hille). so please people remember this next time you see a thread about essendon needing one of these 26 year old rucks and know that we alreayd have enough ruckman (4) and don tneed anymore atm, but if luenburg was still availiable at pick 18 i think i would take him:D .
