For what it's worth I think these clubs would be mad not to trade for Gardiner.
What would he be worth - maybe a 3rd round pick at best - so pick 35 or maybe pick 51.
So using a lousy pick to get him then allows them to snag a player of higher quality in the PSD.
For example - if the blues want to retain Thornton, knowing he is eligible for the PSD - they could acquire Gardy really cheaply and then use their 1st pick in the PSD to retain Thornton.
Alternatively, if the bombers wanted to attract say Steve Johnson from Geelong who would be a 2nd round pick, they could snag him for free in the PSD and only have to pay a 3rd or 4th rnd pick for Gardiner.
just a thought, becuase people expect gardy to go in the PSD - but it makes sense to snag the expensive players in the PSD and get Gardy for next to nicks via trade
