I don't read anything into scratch mates. I still have my 2005 Wizard Cup memorabilia so...

But I do believe today reinforced my view that we need another quality key defender (O'Sullivan for the Cats looks like a star) and another servicable ruck (TDK was good). I am hoping Marchbank works better with Young and then Weiters when he is fit.

Kemp looks like being another draft mistake. From memory we had the pick to get Flanders who is I think this season will show is a gun midfielder we are missing.

That said, I expect a flag.
Not sure about Flanders, but Kossie would be handy in our forward half.

Ironically, when I walked into the ground today, who was there in front of me but ol' mate SOS with his merry band of Saints henchmen at his side. And even worse, I had ****ing Dodoro sitting about 3 rows in front of me!!!

Apart from that, I thought our skills were pretty bog ordinary today, as was our defensive structures particularly in the 1st half - which I found really disappointing. Their skills in finding targets was a level above ours - not sure how it showed up on the flat screen, but at the ground was really noticeable. The amount of times we missed easy targets, or handballed to the feet of our team mates was just awful. I know it's only a practice game, but we need to clean that stuff up - particularly against the top teams. Effort can only get you so far.

Anyway, I'll do a bit of a write up on the VFL boys' victory shortly.

Totally agree with the skills observations. Very poor execution. There were collective sighs from around me in the Legends stand on quite a few occasions.

The boys had a hard fought win in stifling heat....I thought it was only by 1 point, although somebody said it was 7 points - either way, the final siren went at the 8 minute mark of the last quarter, so I think there may have been a gentleman's handshake between the two sides for mercy sake.

Overall, we just had a bunch of kids running around out there trying their guts out. I think the only one in our side out of their nappies was Cincotta - who I thought was by far our best player out of our AFL listed players. He was excellent across half back, and you can see how much his game has developed over the past 12 months since being drafted.

Cats pretty much had a young side as well, although Mannagh was out there as was Parfitt, and Bews at times. They have a few mature age recruits as well, so overall were more experienced than our squad. Although I think that this time of the year, it's really just to give your youngsters a bit of a hit out.

Our only AFL listed players today were Carroll, Lemmey, Binns, Monahan, Cincotta, Wilson, O'Keefe and Akuei.

  • Carroll - was very good. Accumulated a lot of possessions and very poised whenever he got it. Liked his game, and I reckon he'll get a call up at some stage during the year.
  • Lemmey - definitely on the improve. Started forward but moved him to defence during the 2nd half - switching him and McMahon. He's got some athleticism for a big fella, but needs time.
  • Binns - was just Binns. Racks them up at will, and again provided the link between forward and defence. Just never stops running, even in the stifling heat. No doubt will debut this season.
  • Monahan - barely noticed him....although in one passage received the ball, accelerated like a man possessed away from his opponent, a couple of bounces, then kicked it straight into the Geelong bloke coming at him. Turnover, goal. Obviously needs time - of course it's only his first game of aussie rules.
  • Cincotta - dominant across half back.
  • Wilson - also played across half back, and was a little in and out of the play - but when he does get it, provides some real dash and flair. Probably needs a little more composure with the ball at times, it but that'll no doubt come with experience.
  • O'Keefe - was very impressive as pretty much our only ruckman. Easily the best game I've seen him play. Seems to read the play really well, and was more than useful around the ground. Massive tick to the big fella.
  • Akuei - was also very good as probably our sole key defender alongside McMahon (and Lemmey in the 2nd half). He's still a long way off AFL level, but was very steady down back - ridiculous levels of athleticism.

Of the VFL listed boys, Heath Ramshaw imo was best on ground alongside Cincotta. The kid can really play.

A few of the 'no name' kids were also very good - Hugo Nosiara and Will White are the ones that spring to mind, and Hayden Gill good at times. It was great to see Archie Stevens lining up against his 'little' brother George. He's a massive beast is George - his shorts would even be too large for Big John!!!

Thanks for the effort and insight BH

Played on a wing - I think he rotated with Binnsy when he went off for a spell.

To be honest, I didn't notice him a lot, but it's hard to get a read when 'no name' players are running around in numbers in the 60's and 70's. It's just the ones that seem to keep bobbing up are the ones you take notice of.

It's only during the year when you get to know the player and the number when you can get a real gauge.

Pretty well summed up from watching the replay at home, very scratchy and a tad disappointing even considering the heat, wind and conditions…
No injuries though, look forward to next week 👍
Looking forward to your reserves observations BH 👍

How would you breakdown Lemmey’s game in defence BH, in a constructive sense?
What caught your eye and what aspects defensively does he look like he still needs to work on?
Cheers…

just near the end of the game I was lined up behind dorito in the pie queue - he was just standing there looking at the pie warmer - I said "adrian, game's nearly over" - he turns to me and says, "I won't be making a decision until the very last minute".........

Felt like Crippa went unnoticed today and should be talked about more

Feel like it’s very easy to tell when Rick will have a good year based off his preseason

2022, was amazing that preseason, didn’t feel it last year. Obvs a preseason game but be moved really really well today and showed his brilliant self on a couple occasions

I expect AA for the skippa this year

He doesn’t need to prove anything in a scratch match. The most important thing for him today was just to get thru it. When the real stuff starts he’ll be ready, breathing fire, as he always has.

He wasn't there all that long given the final quarter only went for about 8 minutes.

Looked reasonably comfortable there when the ball went down there. I reckon the thing he may have going for him is his athleticism as a big fella...and he's not bad below his knees. Right now he's not a player that can take a big grab up forward - more of a mobile big man.

I'm not sure why they swapped him and McMahon over later in the game when there was nothing at stake. Maybe just to see how he performs down back, but we'd need to see a bigger sample size before we can work out his strengths and weaknesses.

Harry is a coach killer.

Takes great contested mark outside D50.. misses a 5m handball to player running past and then fumbles the pick up. For all the good thing the guy does he manages completely butcher it elsewhere

what do you think should be done?

It was noticeable in that training footage Terry uploaded last week that the kicking was off.
Will be interesting to see how it goes next week with a few troops back and hopefully better conditions.
Good to see Boyd went well and Moir kicking 2 will help his confidence. One on his left, one on his right - a sign of things to come.
No injuries - great result.

It was amazing to see 35yo Tom Hawkins in his 18th season looking fit as a fiddle in oppressive conditions while there are 7-8 Blues who should be in their prime that weren't out there for various reasons.

Maybe b

We Badly need better defensive cover options than Young and Kemp. I think Lemmey is an awesome defensive prospect. He’s athletic enoug. Big enough. Clean enough. Plays proper football. In fact I can’t work out how he doesn’t become a reliable genuine key defender. Much harder to get separation for him as a forward.

Backline a no brainer for me.

Not sure anyone commented on him…..but gee Blake Acres is a reliable player. He went at maybe 80 percent yesterday but he is just so smart, strong over the ball and in the air, doesn’t make any dumb decisions, doesn’t fumble, gets to the right spots.

Gulden is the only wing I’d swap for him in the AFL. He’s that good. I prefer him to Josh Daicos. Big call but I do.
