The first 4 are definite, the rest are all in that traffic jam of players who could be.

Weitering, Williams, Martin, Walsh and Pittonet (with JSOS out) are all locks imo. Then you have Marchbank who is competing with Kemp for one spot in the 22. I had Kemp in mine but I think the club will go with Marchbank. Owies and Kennedy just out of the 22 for me but wouldn't surprise if they lined up for OR.

Our F50 entries were a bit ordinary, Cats far more clinical in this area.
Hope we learn not to constantly bomb it long, expecting Charlie and Harry to win the game for us.
H did look more confident in the ruck contests. :heavycheck:
That's disappointing to hear. With the athletic tall forwards we have they should always be on the move and leading to create space and keep defender's honest. Charlie tried to wrestle his way through the finals and it didn't work. Sometimes the long bomb is all we can do but our midfielders need to lower eyes and honour leading forwards.

Felt like Crippa went unnoticed today and should be talked about more

Feel like it’s very easy to tell when Rick will have a good year based off his preseason

2022, was amazing that preseason, didn’t feel it last year. Obvs a preseason game but be moved really really well today and showed his brilliant self on a couple occasions

I expect AA for the skippa this year
I thought he was one of our better players today and you could tell he was playing well whilst still only in second gear. When he wanted to impact the play he did.

Key Takeaways:
  • Cerra is our best midfielder right now
  • Hewett a lock. Love him.
  • Our two big boys in Mckay and TDK fought hard and played well. Imposed themselves.
  • Boyd is a lock
  • Charlie needs to learn craft more than just use his talent. I still love him and feel he is the best of his type EVER.
  • Cunners / Carroll are VFL for mine with another chance to prove themselves. Both of these two just lack mongrel to win a spot/do something that stands out. Both should just get angry/physical and show us they want it. They dont. They needs to research Hewett's temperament. They are diff midfielders to him but it is his mindset that makes him the player he is.
  • I'll give Kemp another chance but yes he was god awful.
  • Mcgovern like boyd is in great shape. Saad is just Saad. Want to see Williams play too.
  • We will need to dominate the play 65% because without the ball we ship such easy transition goals. We are slow defensively.
  • Nothing much showed up in improvement in transition inside 50 or running back defensively. I will concede we went more corridor and the inside 50 kicks wasn't diabolical again, just not that great. So maybe marginal improvement.
  • We are just a big team with brute force who are slow without the ball. But we are physical and hard.
  • I find it really poor that with their coaching resources that they cant implement any real set plays coming out of defence - similar to an american gridiron team. That every time we come out of defence there is never any pattern at all and the players have no real link. It is dire and just sad.
  • Young is lost. Takes too long to dispose of the ball and is quite often caught out in the wrong position.
  • Happy with E Hollands and Motlop. The former starts when allowed.
  • O Hollands is a gem.
  • Moir and Fantasia looked a bit off the pace to me. I'm indifferent on round 0 for both of them.
  • We still have poor transition but we do have a highly talent list/team so if they bust their gut and keep persisting with the corridor then we will do fine. But it could be so much better/easier if they could learn some intelligent transition plays.

Was with the Spirit of Carlton boys today on that balcony behind the goals. Great place to watch footy from.

Some of the attendees were Geoff Southby, David McKay, Stephen Gough, Ian Collins, Wayne Johnston amongst others.

Great to see Eddie Betts there, was with his oldest boy who is nearly as tall as him now. Zac Williams popped in for a while as well.

Good to see a bit of footy at the old ground, the players having a run around, the wind out there was a nightmare because not only was it very strong but it was gusty and changing direction at the same time. Was nice to be just five metres away from seeing Moir kick his first unnoffical goal for the Blue Boys. No injuries is the best news, second best is the hot weather will help us for our game against Brissy.

All the head honchos were also there, going to be a long day for them with the AGM tonight.

Sandwiches were top notch.
I saw you up there. Looks like you would have had a great day.

I actually though he was ordinary. His skills were not great. I watched him closely.

I don't read anything into scratch mates. I still have my 2005 Wizard Cup memorabilia so...

But I do believe today reinforced my view that we need another quality key defender (O'Sullivan for the Cats looks like a star) and another servicable ruck (TDK was good). I am hoping Marchbank works better with Young and then Weiters when he is fit.

Kemp looks like being another draft mistake. From memory we had the pick to get Flanders who is I think this season will show is a gun midfielder we are missing.

That said, I expect a flag.

Flanders has done nothing in his career to date other than prove he is a middle of the road player. Kemp has played as a key position player in 2 winning finals

Just back in Gippsland after a pretty warm day in Melbourne.
Some general observations
The effort was there back the lack of poise and composure was telling.
The structures of the forward and defence were substandard. Far too much kicking blindly. Similar to the first half of the season last year. I would hope that the inclusions will hopefully remedy that. With Weitering out I cannot see us match Brisbane's forwards.

Some players I watched closely
Motlop - was very lively early and was impressive. Hoping for a big year from him
Cerra - all class. Made such a difference when on the field.
Harry - a brilliant contested mark and was very involved when up forward or in the ruck. Bloody hell his kicking for goal....
Cunners - as mentioned previously, does some flashy things then disappears
The Hollands - both excellent, great acquisitions
TDK - very solid in the ruck and around the ground
Fogerty - unsighted
Fantasia - has legs like a half sucked lolly. Not much of him. It will be interesting to see what he offers
Moir - nice balance and knows where to go. Confident he will bring the class and poise we need as he develops.
Saad - brilliant!
Cripps - plodded along, no influence.

Not much more. It will be interesting to see who lines up and where next week against Melbourne.

Go Blues!
