Carlton v Richmond season opener again in 2016

Carlton v Richmond has been the season opener for the last 8 years;

WRONG!!!
Of the last 4 years only once has Carlton and Richmond kicked off the AFL season.
We tend to play each other round one often, especially if it is just before Easter but 2012 to 2014 it was not the opening game of AFL season.
GWS v Sydney, Adelaide v Essendon and Collingwood v Fremantle were.
Also 2014 season we played Port Adelaide in round one.

Just highlights how people's perception is far off reality in this thread.

People in glass houses! You are throwing things out there so you should expect something to come back at you; that is how forums work.

Carlton v Richmond has been the season opener for the last 8 years; regardless of where both teams are on the ladder. The games draws 80,000 per year regardless of where both teams are on the ladder. The AFL see it as a winner because of this reason. Very much like Anzac day. A shame such a simple concept needs to be spelt out to you.

What am I throwing out there?

What's the problem?

The problem is your post.

We now accept a competition where clubs expecting to finish near the bottom field essentially development teams.
Carlton are in that position . . . again.
So why would anyone want to see those sort of teams over-represented in prime time?
Prime time games should be exclusively for teams challenging for finals.

Standing on the high ground as a St.Kilda supporter. I like the saints, have been my second team for decades. My issue is that your team has been down and out longer than any other, yet you posture and get on your high horse about a lowly team getting fixtured for a game it has been fixtured for for the last 8 years. I would have thought, that as a saints supporter, you would understand that some of the lower teams need exposure. One game is by no means being over-represented in prime time. If you are talking about last year, I agree, but that is not the argument. The argument is over whether Carlton v Richmond should be the season opener..

Where to begin?

Firstly, that's not my post - a point I think you know, hence why you haven't quoted it.

Secondly, Carlton has the most wooden spoons this century, and the Saints have more grand final appearances than Carlton in the AFL era.

Thirdly, I don't expect the Saints to get the season launch game coming off a wooden spoon. Don't try and put words in my mouth.

If it's all about continuity - which is your claim, let's bring back the traditional Brisbane v St Kilda season launch game. Fortunately, no one is advocating that because no neutral wants to watch that game while both sides are rebuilding. The same goes for the Carlton v Richmond game.

Coming from a saints supporter. Really?!
Saints, Dogs, Dees, North, Port, Lions fans etc are quite entitled to say that considering the pathetic FIXturing they cop once they bottom out.

If these clubs bottom out in the current climate they get no Friday night's or are lucky to get one and get pushed out to majority Sunday games and the Victorians at the bottom cop more games vs interstate opposition contributing to poor attendances making it hard to make money in those times. They gain bugger all FTA in the Victorian market, membership would probably be down and their brand is poorly represented.

But once your club for etc bottoms out you get the same treatment and coverage as what the "minnows" would receive if the "minnows" were cemented top 4/8.

All 6 of those "minnows" have been far more successful onfield since Carlton's last grand final appearance 16 years ago.

They're quite entitled to have their say on the matter as the goalposts should not be pushed for anyone.

Alternative season opener fixture suggestions-

WA or SA derby
Geelong v Adelaide
Sydney v Hawthorn
Collingwood v Brisbane
Hawthorn v Fremantle/ West Coast
Port v Hawthorn
Port v Collingwood

All would be better season openers. Alas.

Apart from the absolute vileness of Carlton's list, making matters even worse are that Rich are just a dull team to watch. Poorly skilled on the whole and a team of front runners. Surely WB v Nth would have been better...reward two form teams who normally get shafted by the draw. Instead they reward the battling blues who get the draw from heaven every year.

Anyone could play and it could be a shit game, what did you think of the season opener in 2014, that was memorable wasn't it.
Of course, the grand final between the league's two best teams was a damp squib of an affair. But you can at least maximise your chances of a more competitive game. I understand it's all about live crowds, but I see no reason why the premiers vs a prelim finalist couldn't draw close to the same numbers; it's the first game, people are eager for the season to start.

Lol from a saints fan, At least we have been shit for 30 odd years not a basket case of a club for over 100 plus years.

I have massive respect for the hundred year old plus Saints supporters of bigfooty

Carlton v Richmond has been the season opener for the last 8 years;
Remind me . . . when did Mike Fitzpatrick get the gig as AFL Chairman?

Any chance it was 2007? (the last year before this farcical "tradition" was started)
