Bad kicking is bad football. 5 behinds in a quarter is something we are use to really.

but it is a new year and a new system. Got to give it time to settle. Imagine if we kicked 5 goals instead of 5 behinds that quarter.....the thread would be full of praise

I don't disagree with you, but that doesn't preclude people from having concerns on individual players.

What happen to the run and overlap and swarm -- looked like us of old -- when ball transition defence all at see still running around with no purpose looking at each other ..
thought Pitto would be able to really dominate today against there ruck - maybe needs the run also doesn't help playing two slow mids with him -- maybe Kennedy should be break glass option throughout the year - if dow isn't in front of him he is in for long year in the 2's --
Next week should be a better guide

I dunno how "game-y" the coaches get with this stuff - but given we had the run of it for the first quarter, is there a world where Voss says "right, let's really test our defense in the second quarter"?

It's a practice match!
People need to remember this when watching.
I think you'll find Voss will make us play more like the 1st qtr for the season the pressure was intense and we were moving the ball freely, I think we took the foot off in the second qtr not a directive per se but I think we saw in the first what we are capable of if we are focused and on.
Saints picked it up from the second but we don't know the directives and game time of players etc all we can hope for is a run in the legs for the boys a competitive hit out not against your team mates and no bloody injuries.

Lets get through healthy. Especially Charlie Curnow

Amazing how much more effective we look when we play first option footy.

Cripps trying to sell candy on the edge of the forward 50 only to mess it up and turn the footy over reminded me of the kind of rubbish he was trying to do under Teague. Vossy needs to stamp out those kinds of efforts - it's team killing stuff.

LOB is starting to find some easier ball, but his decision-making and conviction under any slight amount of pressure is so disappointing. You can't trust that he's going to go when he needs to hold his ground or his nerve by taking a simple chest mark in defence.

Great signs from Charlie. His athleticism and read are still top notch. Also nice to see him bring Boyd into the game after his loopy turnover kick in defence.

Cerra is a accumulating but nervy, which is expected.

A couple of nice run-on plays from Philp.

We were dominated that quarter and need to go back to hitting some short targets coming out of defence and setting up to get our mid-sized players (Setters, Kennedy, JSOS) on mismatched one-on-ones.

Concerns: Gov as a defender. LOB struggling with the tempo of the game, still not a lock for a starting 22. Durdin will improve, but was really nervous/rushed, Boyd similar. We let the opposition spread/open up the ground way too easy
Agree with all above and would take plow over Newman if available .. I thought Kemp was suited down back if you were going to introduce to the midfield instead of retooling gov I hope he proves me wrong

Geez it’s good to be back Princes Park.

Boyd and LOB have the yips bad!
Fish making some silly decisions.
OMac is no L Jones
Cerra is class
Haven’t seen much from Kemp or Philp.
Setters has been involved but doesn’t like to contest. - cost us a goal
Pitto is everywhere
Owies great effort and run

Well, promised myself I wouldn't get too excited or too down on whatever we see today.
Like what I'm seeing so far in general terms, remembering that Walsh and McKay being out changes things a fair bit, and Jones too really.
Obviously first quarter was better than the second, but if we'd taken some of those missed opportunities on the scoreboard, it probably would have felt a bit better.

Don't care too much about the result from here, but would like to see more of what we saw in the first.

Saints did lift their pressure, but we dropped off and stopped running back to plug holes in front of the leading lanes. Players also went from bring teammates into play, to trying to bite off too much

Concerns: Gov as a defender. LOB struggling with the tempo of the game, still not a lock for a starting 22. Durdin will improve, but was really nervous/rushed, Boyd similar. We let the opposition spread/open up the ground way too easy

Good: Philp showed some good glimpses, OMac positioned well, needed more support from our 3rd/mid size defenders. Hewett did the grunt work well, Cerra generally smooth
Agree with all of this, but Philp is on the same list as Durdin and Boyd in terms of making a mess of basic decision making and execution when in possession, and OMac has no ability to capitalise on his positioning.

O'Brien gassing himself is a symptom of the defensive failures that were occurring from the start.

No, you are wrong. You are the one concentrating on the outcome rather than the process. Even if we had, as you say, kicked 5 straight Cripps would still be trying to do too much, Kennedy would look slow and lacking defensive pressure, Newman making poor decisions etc which are legitimate criticisms people are making, and if these players continue down this as per previous years, no matter win or lose a practice match it will hurt us in proper games.

The score doesn't matter, but the little observations people are making are completely fine.

LOB gassing himself is not understanding the next phase in play, overrunning between the fall of the ball

criticisms in a pre-season match that doesn't mean hardly anything...............that is a meltdown. These games are just to try things for the coming season.

I half agree with you. Pre-season match like this are pretty meaningless, mostly just dusting off some cobwebs.

But I've seen many red flags in recent years' praccy matches that have followed through to the season proper.

Also, players with ? marks on them on intensity/skills/speed etc... If the same things are showing up today, then they're concerns that are notable.

People make them more harshly if we are losing...........they wouldn't post them if we are winning and that is a fact

$16.50 for a ticket. Have to register for the fu**en thing. Parking… $10.
Only one gate to enter. Trying to buy food, long queue. Who knows what that will cost.
