Win 3 consecutive premierships?

1. Calls for Jordan Lewis to be dropped.
2. coaches had a shocker.
3. Bring back old retired player?

#hawthornproblems.
You're so black and white Davo and yeah I am an emotional guy.

But it's hard to watch the usual guys lifting in the moments and pushing beyond the limits, whilst Shoenmakers was so invisible it boggles the mind.

I don't think Lake would have had any impact on the outcome. Our backline was fine. Our midfield was beaten, and our forward line was ineffective.
This.

Can I ask a question?

Was this your first game of watching AFL football?

If not then you have NFI...

Stratton and Gibbo were useless once again. Hasn't happened since 2012. I wonder why that might be.

Please......

Gibson was one of the our best..... Once again.

He had 24 touches and his opponent kicked 0 goals. But he lost a couple of contests on the wing. So he must have been shit .

Stratton was ok. Had some very dodgy free kicks against him.

But we lost the game because we got beaten in the midfield, and had no presence up forward. Our bottom 6 players were also badly exposed.

Result isn't surprising given our outs and Geelong's ins. Dangerfield is a jet. Such a huge bonus for them scoring a player like that for so little. Awesome 3rd quarter by us. Saw some signs of what we are capable of. Kids will be better for the run. Plenty of premiership teams have lost rd.1. Get Shiels and Ceglar back next week and we will take care of West Coast. Go Hawks.

Final philosophical thought: Those 4 flags are in the bank baby!

Have to be thankful for the last 3 flags in a row, unbelievable achievement and alot of things went our way at the right times. As most people said our top 4 players not as good as last year and our bottom team the same and they got an unbelievable recruit in dangerfield, if without him we may have had a chance. It was difficult watching Kirsten outmuscling Gibson so easily, with lake there last year would not have happened. Just got to be so proud of what we have achieved so far last 3 years. I am not sure what the answer is though this year, it is very even competition, I guess top 4 players got to step up and others follow. Gibson,Mitchell,Hodge, burgoyne can only play elite for so long, they have already done so well late in their careers to help in a big way to win 3 premierships, add Lake ofcourse who retired. Talke of Lewis being traded is perhaps dis tasteful, he has never been the most skillful but surely one player cannot change fate of a club. Look at Bulldogs, you need to stars on every line to compete for premierships and having some luck with selections, selecting Parker instead of boxer.

If Parkin said it I'll take it to the bank.
He's a Hawthorn man and doesn't make shit up for a headline.

Burgoyne also called bullshit on it:

He has not ruled out continuing in 2017 and denied a report where coaching great David Parkin claimed Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson had sat down his veteran players and warned them they were one injury away from retirement and needed now to plan for their future.

"We have meetings all the time about life outside of football, what are you doing professionally to prepare for life after footy – that's the same with the younger players as well," he said.

"None of that stuff has been said to us. There has been no hard line at all (that) this is your last year. The boys could go for another year, two, three years.

Don't think we need Lake but an extra big man down back will help. Need to blood Brand and release Gibbo again.

He was shocking ! OMG it was like he was invisible... How can you play a good game in the GF and bring that shite to the table RD 1?

Playing out of position. His best footy is roaming up the ground. Chuck him in deep and he's a liability. We just have no one else with Roughy and Hale gone.

Patrick Dangerfield looks like David Brent but is faster.

Langford ABSOLUTELY must stay in this team - looked like the only one who really gave a shit in the first half.

Disappointing effort - particularly schoey, cyril, sicily - but only round 1 and we turn it on when it really counts.

As the rest of the football world rejoice, we lick our wounds. In all honesty, we were never going to win this game. So much inexperience. I mean O'Rourke, Litherland, Sicily and when I saw Pitto run out, I sensed this was not looking good.
It's only rd1, but now with the news that Hodgey may have broken the arm, then not sure how this will play out.

Lake would not have made the difference, but I think this is the one decision that will come back and bite us on the arse. Strats looked like he was a skinny 18 year old kid getting rag doll'd by everyone and apart from Mitch, our senior mob did next to nothing. But how long are we going to rely on these blokes. It's time for our younger brigade to pull their heads out of their arses and take some respnsibility.

It's only rd1, but next week looks bleak! Please not 2009 again...... Can't be to greedy i suppose

I like how they say Duncan was reported for Rough conduct but appeared to miss the head. If he broke Hodges arm he should get weeks. He tried to take his head off
Duncan sped up when he saw Hodge was going back with the flight of the ball and he left the ground to make contact.

Its fair to say my opinion of Mitch Duncan has gone down several notches after that incident. I believe the term "dog act" is appropriate nomenclature.

Rioli to have a chat with Clarkson. WTF today!
Sicily not up to it. He'll be playing with Bueau Muston at Frankston next year. What can you say...
Shoenmakers to get a rocket in the ear if he's planning to play again this season...another one of those what can you say about his game..last years grand final maybe his best game ever!

Lewis. We'll I got to say some of his kicks today were bewildering for someone of his capabilty. He was his own nightmare and costs us dearly in turnovers at VER VERY crucial times.
Hodge... where were you first half.
Smith... where were you first half....there were others...ohh boy!

I thought
O'Rourke
Pittonet
Hartung
Langford
Litherland
...they played well given the support around them...

Geelong are a team of plodders and the season will show that...and we made them look good today...that's all I can say on the matter of this game. Disappointing 3 out of 4 quarter effort. 7 goals in the last quarter..when was the last time Hawthorn copped that!

For a bloke iv seen at BH want to fight every man and his dog i thought Sicily was poor on 3 occasions where and when he needed to put his head over the ball and win the contest .....really poor.
Thought JOR lacked both composure and disp penetration .....have Howe in front of him.
Thought Pits was very good , competed hard and didn't take a backward step.
Gus ....yer / nar .
Miss Spang a lot imo .
If Hodge is added to our injurys which all are long term the year WILL get away from us .......09 all over sadly .
And bye the way , 3 flags in a row shouldn't stop posters from airing there opinions . The roses in the garden are wilting make no mistake about it .

Geezus it's not great for his career is it, should if noticed I take it back I genuinely feel for him now having to play out of position...hope he can do the best he can.... These injuries are shocking wouldn't we have the highest injury list now!?

Thought we played reasonably well as a whole. Geelong had everything going their way in the first half including kicking for goal 11 goals 1 behind at one point. Frees in front of goal, bounce of the ball, breaking tackles, everything. One competitive qtr in the 3rd and the games was in the balance. Momentum was ours. We were competitive today

Hawks were 4&4 in 2015. Glimpses today of a team that can dominate. Looking forward to how Clarkson and the team play out 2016. Go Hawks !!!!

Don't think we need Lake but an extra big man down back will help. Need to blood Brand and release Gibbo again.

Why??

This is the exact same setup that won in 2013/14 except we have Frawley instead of Lake.

At times last year we looked to tall down back, that's why we had Frawley play forward.

Not many teams have 2 high quality tall forwards.

Unbelievable how many people don't realise that we won three flags because we had such a complete vision and system to execute it.
With Lake gone we lose:
1) 7 or 8 rebounding attacks from his marks
2) Gibbo playing on his terms
3) Frawley locking down

But most importantly it throws everything out of whack. There were a ton of times our midfield was down in games over those years and he sensed the moments and stopped the damage.
Now unless Mitchell destroys teams every minute of the game they will score ...

I know I am an emotional dude but Brand must come in and play all season simply for our structure.

And Shoey, I'll just drop that. I trust Clarko but FFS he can crush the system too.

My observations -
Schoey had 2 on him most of the night.

Scicily had a couple of Kayler-Thompson moments which may have gotten his papers out ready for stamping.

Geelong riding a wave of danger led belief that they will go places this year. I thought their chipping around to conserve energy in the first half instructive as to their approach this year - they're still big and haven't trimmed much to increase endurance - risky business if you ask me.

While on Geelong, I think they've come up with another exploit. Not sure what to call it yet, but on at least 4 occasions they ran under the ball on a marking contest then feigned being tunneled on feeling incidental contact. They msged to draw 2 free kicks from the 4 attempts that I witnessed. This could be the new Geelong handball....

O'Rourke looked alright to me. I think he needs to build confidence and assert himself more; if he can do that then he can become a good playmaker for the side.

I thought the coaches made it hard for the team by not selecting the best matched side for Geelong. They obviously thought they could exploit the slower Geelong forwards but they marked so often that the strategy backfired.

Gunston and poppy looked good.
