Don't think he wants to go anywhere but I'm not sure why supporters would be thinking "please no".

Seems to be one of the most misunderstood players - tries his guts out every week but is labelled very differently.

Enters next season in incredibly hot form - he got 36 Coaches votes in the last month of football - nearly double the next best player in the comp.

Hopeful we keep him and he carries on in that fashion. If someone else does pick him up, learn from Port and Hawthorn and play him predominantly in the middle with stints up forward rather thn the other way around. Super damaging that way and is part of the reason he was best on ground four weeks in a row to finish the season which helped see Hawthorn start winning games.
The fact that you have to highlight only a 4 week period to show why Chad is good syas everything we need to know about his work ethic and consistency.

Gws know wingard wont go there so it wont happen. This is really about sending a message to young that they wont trade hill unless they get what they want out of it.

How much of Wingard salary would Hawthorn be prepared to pay for pick 2?? We havent seen these type of salary dump deals done in AFL but they are commonplace in the NBA.

GWS give pick 2, for Wingard with Hawthorn paying 90% of the salary..

Hawthorn dont need salary cap room ATM, they are rebuilding and high draft picks are far more valuable to them than salary cap room.

We have seen them Hannerbury Rohan Jenkins higgins were all salary dumps

Yeh I realise that, but even before this Wingard talk there cap is very sketchy.

Kelly 1m
Cogs 1m
Toby 800k
Whitfield 800k
Haynes 750k
Hopper 750k
Taranto 700k
Harry 650k
Perryman 500k
Taylor 500k
Ward 500k

7,950,000 there abouts for those 11 alone.
Salary cap for 2022 is 13.54m. The remaining 27 players wages will be at an average of 205k, extremely doubtful

That’s not including Ash, Daniels, Cumming, Green,
Have you not heard of Ambassador payments??

Yes, the deal is dependent on two things.

Salary and Chad saying “ok”.

HFC far more likely to pay the salary than Chad is to saying “ok”.

Depending on who GWS are looking for at pick 2 then I could see that pick up for grabs. If they are interested in Mac Andrew’s or Gibcus then a pick swap of 2 and 5 along with a future second would be my best offer if I was GWS.

I dont know about that... It depends what drives him as a footballer, most footballers crave success.. The reality of being a 28yo player at Hawthorn now means that you will spend the remainder of your career playing in a struggling team.. If he stays at Hawthorn they are very likely to run out his contract and delist him.. If Mitchell is on a pure rebuild, Chad could spend parts of the year playing VFL as Mitchell promotes kids..

No, it really doesn't. Particularly as I went on to highlight (and had already highlighted) his form and his stats across the whole season, which was consistently good.

I only raised the last 4 weeks in particular as this was (a) his most recent form, (b) the form that correlated with the new direction and coaching appointment at the club and (c) Because he managed to elevate to being the most damaging player in the comp for that period.

IF you read through the thread, look up his stats or best of all, had watched Hawthorn in 2021, you would see he has was consisently very good throughout the season. His last month or so he was given a modified role (pure midfield with license) presumably due to the coaching shift and went to a new level again where he collected 36 coaches votes (as far as I an tell, the most of any player ever for a 4 week stretch).

I don't think "best in the comp" can be maintained but the way he played throughout the season can and demonstrates he does not lack consistency or work ethic anymore.

Come on now, it’s highly likely he doesn’t go, but he WILL NOT be playing VFL for Sam to play some kids. 😂

I have liked your contributions but there is no way Hawthorn play Wingard in the VFL, rebuilding or not.

He is in the top 3 players at the club and is our only current quality midfielder that can go forward to good effect and can be as dynamic on the outside as he is on the inside.

Even if you want to develop young players, you don't do that by dropping quality players around them, giving them less support and a far greater likelihood of getting thrashed by the opposition. You lose structures and 'hands on the ball' if you are playing your best players in the VFL, just because they are older.

It also is not great for the culture of a club if players are more than deserving of selection and not getting picked. It disgruntles the senior playing group, sends the wrong message to other players wanting to come and to be frank, is not usually the best for the young players who get their spot anyway.

If young midfield stars emerge, you play them alongside Wingard and perhaps rotate Wingard forward a bit more - not drop your gun players to the VFL.

Oh my goodness. I have read some bizarre things this week but that is one of the most ridiculous.

Happy with that.

Also suggests something pretty positive about the internals at the club that such a quality player is adamant that he's not going anywhere even with all the waves made during the coaching transition. I always saw Chad as Clarko's man and thought we'd be hearing a lot more about Gunston as well considering he was the most vocal about what happened with Clarko moving on. Fingers crossed it means the culture and relationships at the club have been strengthened since one or two months ago when it was all happening.

Geelong paid 3 first round picks for Cameron at the same age.

Lol I know it sounds big, but you really do need to look at it in terms of what the trade ended up being on draft night:

Picks 15, 18 and 25 for Cameron, 30 and 32 (will be 32 and 34 on draft night).

So essentially Cameron and 32 for 15 and 18 was the original trade, and then we traded out 20 (25) for Essendon's Future 2nd - 30 (32) in this draft.

No-one saw the improvement of the Bombers being this big this season, so we screwed the latter part of it up IMO.

With that said, Cameron, 32 and 34 on draft night for 15, 18 and 25 last year on draft night, isn't the end of the world, and it's still a decent price to pay for one of the Top 5 KPF's in the comp

Yeah I am in the camp that we need to move on some players but I realllllllly wasn’t keen on losing Chad. Win or lose he is a reason for me to watch us!
