When they selected Tunstill ahead of Ah Chee I realised BF posters sometimes have more idea about selections than those close to the coalface who often already have their minds made up.

We're wedded to Answerth and Lyons so that will never change. Zorko is Captain and Rich is AA so they will get selected automatically as well.

Personally I would leave Cockatoo in because he looks to me to be on the improve all of a sudden and has the big body plus pace. Lyons doesn't deserve his spot on current form where we have better players up forward where he's spending a bit of time. Mathieson really changed the mix and showed we were too staid in our thinking and really need to mix it up a bit to compete against the elite teams. Prior ,Ah Chee, Mathieson all have to play because it gives us a toughness edge we were lacking. Sorry Robbo ,you're really tough too but not as effective.

What?

If Matho goes out 3KZ and some others will go full on nuclear meltdown mode.
If Matho gets dropped the media will do it for me, because Fagan would have a serious credibility problem.

I love Joe but he just doesn't look right to me.

He had that shoulder issue earlier in the season and it looks to me that it's still a problem

In the Essendon game , he was heavily scragged and at one point one of their players pulled his arm back at an awkward angle, which seemed to aggravate that shoulder issue.

I woudn't be against Joe being rested for a game due to "General Soreness".

It would at least open up a few more options for Ruck/forward combinations
Agree with regards to Daniher. Give him a break and get him right.

What I would like to see:

In: Zorko, McInerney, Berry, Rich, Lester, Prior

Out: Answerth, Payne, Lyons, Sharp, Cockatoo, Daniher (Managed)

Zorko plays HB
Oscar and Fort share ruck duties and go forward
Lester for Payne
Berry on a wing
Rich starts on bench
Prior HF

Bigfooty posters are better than the coaches Nunez.
Some BigFooty posters are coaches, BRAB. I’ll be looking after the Under 10’s tomorrow as we go four our fourth straight win. There has been some controversy around on field positions in the U10’s, with 3KZ Junior demanding more time forward. When I explained that we nearly always win when he divides his time between the midfield and CHB, he was happy to sacrifice a certain bag of goals for one or two out of the middle.

With the three tall forwards, I prefer fort to O. We need mid field contested possessions, and fort is way ahead of O in that area.

Seriously concerned about Zorko's ongoing soft tissue injury issues. Selecting him impacts on the other selections around him. When he subs out, we don't just lose him, we lose the balance we built around him. How many times are we willing to risk the team structure? Are we anywhere near not needing him???

Going to be interesting selection meeting.

All good until he reaches a contract year, and then he's out of there to play in his preferred position at another club.

Sydney apparently offering an unprecedented contract for a u10s player - 10 happy meals over nine years

I know. The “No i-pad on Game Day” clause in his contract is managing him effectively now, but any club willing to dispense with that clause will pick him up in a heartbeat. He’s also happy to be paid in Roblox Gift Cards.

Real loyalty test coming up for all the Gold Coast groupies on this board.

I'll be wearing both a Lions and Suns scarf. BRAB and I have agreed we'll sit together on a Gabba members wing so we remain neutral to both of our teams. ☀️🦁

It's a very hard week for selection. Assuming no Covid cookery, I'd be looking at:

Out: Sharp, Fort, Cockatoo
In: Berry, Oscar, Rich

If Zorko is in, then realistically one of Matho or Lyons has to go. The problem is, it won't be Lyons.

Fort and Cockatoo both played very decent football so it's a shame one or both would have to go out, but such is the curse of a good football team.

Just want to clarify you think Fort that has no aggression is a better contested player than O? Fort is a good second Ruck and is great to have on the list as a Back Up. Fort went well yesterday but against what?

Would say Flynn is an ok but probably bottom half of the comp ruck. Probably similar to Fort really. Neither are top tier

Would be a brave decision to leave Lyons out given his history vs Gold Coast.
I know . But when was the last decent game he played where he had an impact ? It was plain to see yesterday the difference to our M/F with Matho in there and Lyons in a lesser role.

I suppose it depends on whether Zorko is fit or not. Lyons has run out of chances in my view but we keep hoping next week is the week the old Lyons will turn up.

I think O is better tap ruck than fort. I think tap ruck is important when you have big bodied midfield who can muscle the tap receive. We don't.

I think fort is better at getting the ball into a melee after the bounce.

With our current midfield, we are great at thrown in, where the 666 does not apply, but not a centre clearances.

I think fort is good enough to disrupt the bounce and get the ball into the melee, and hold it to get another bounce. Which is not 666, and has a higher chance of us winning the clearance.

Might be stats somewhere of clearances by O and fort, but don't think there is anything on what happens immediately after the clearance.

But you are right, yesterday's ruck opposition wasn't a real test of fort. And not sure that the coaches want a real test at this end of the season.

FOLL- Omac H.Mcluaggage L.Neale
I/C- R.Mathieson, D.Zorko, C.Rayner, C.Ah’Chee
Sub: H.Sharp

In- Gardiner, J.Berry, Prior, Omac, Zorko
Out- Fullatron, Robinson, Cockatoo, Fort

In: Rich, Berry, Oscar, Adams, Prior
Out: Bailey, Gardiner, Hipwood, Sharp, Lyons

Giving Bailey a run in ressies to wake up and find form.

Finding form and developing in the twos is clearly a valid pathway. Keays and matho (early days, but has been consistent in the twos) both were clearly a cut above and deserved to play up.

The twos isn't just a playground for high picks to do their time in before moving up, it's a genuine opportunity for players to develop their attitude and skills. We should definately be saying to players, play in the twos, own it consistently, love the game, not just playing in front of crowds, then you'll be back.

from the outside it appears the older/seasoned players get a little more leeway and can understand that to some degree, but there have been a few instances where selections could be questioned.

Carter Michael debut last week against the bombers and went pretty well, so against a non top 8 team (who only scored 29 points in total the previous week) I would have played him against the Giants and not bothered flying down Answerth separately for yesterdays game.

Whilst I am neutral on Matho and he already has 60 odd AFL games (so has experience), I thought he provided some grunt yesterday and at least deserves another crack this week against the Suns.

I don't know the answer to the Lyons riddle. I will say that much of some of the criticism has been overblown. He ranks 9th in the league in clearances (4th for centre clearances and 13th for stoppage clearances) which is not to be ignored.

His disposal count is down though, which is the other side of the coin - he doesn't appear to be covering the ground as well and that has been noticeable in the some of the issues the the defence were getting blamed for. And as we all know, the lack of spread has been the main criticism of him over the years and the reason Gold Coast let him go.

I've never been a coach, but I imagine for most, the equation is simple: which matrix of players is going to give the greatest chance of success? Is a 80% Lyons better than a 100% Mathieson? I suspect it's about equal and that's where it gets tricky I think. If Matho drops away a bit the question won't go away about his long-term effectiveness in the team. When he has only 69% TOG and struggled at time with repeat efforts, how's that going to go against better stoppage teams?

For the record, what Matho gave us yesterday was exactly what I though the team had been missing. But anyone claiming surety based on Matho's performance is deluding themselves.
