Changes for Perth

Have no fear everyone I just heard M.Hussey on SBS sport say that North was "batting really well and a big score was just around the corner".

I am convinced! :thumbsu:

LOL
That is all...

I'm actually going to guess the selectors team for Perth. It's more fun!

1. Hughes
2. Watson
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Hussey
6. Haddin
7. Smith
8. Doherty
9. Harris
10. Siddle
11. Hilfenhaus

Hilfenhaus in for Bollinger
Smith in for North for the batting and the occasional spin bowling.
Hughes in for Katich

Can't see anymore than 3 changes to the team. They will keep Doherty in I think and give him one last crack. If he doesn't perform, Hauritz will get the gig at the MCG. Smith has to replace North. That is logical.

Siddle's hattrick and spell at the Gabba has saved him. If he doesn't perform in Perth, he will get the chop for Johnson.

If they keep North in, they will bring in Smith for Doherty.

Basically I can't see them not giving Smith a baggy green. It's just a matter of finding the space for him.

I am willing to bet a large amount of money that won't be the starting XI for Perth

Here is the problem.

Check out some of those stats... it isn't very hopefull.

Sure, there is Khawaja... let's take it as a given that he'll get a spot.

Then we have Hussey... who is averaging a touch over 40, which is good but not spectacular. And he is already 33, so not exactly a long term option.

Blizzard, who looks to have potential... but has only played 7 matches and is very inexperienced.

McDonald... who is injured.

Marsh... who seems to have hit some form, but has only played two first class matches this year.

Take notices of Hughes and Smith, whose names appear way down the bottom of the list. IMHO, if there is a batting vacancy up for grabs, Khawaja should be first choice, followed by Marsh. But they really are the best of a pretty bad bunch.
Even Khawaja has really only had 1 good innings for the summer and that was against the redbacks, none of the others in the top half a dozen have had that luxury yet ;)

Been a bit skeptical, but I would love to see these:

OUTS:

Simon Katich (Injured)
Marcus North (Omitted)
Peter Siddle (Omitted)
Xavier Doherety (Omitted)

INS:

Phillip Hughes
Steve Smith
Mitch Johnson
Nathan Hauritz

OK, my reasoning.

Phillip Hughes - Best available, the 'next big thing' in Australian cricket, so he will be played.

Steve Smith - People have been calling for him to play, as much as I would love for Khawaja to play, could we potentially pick Smith as a batting all rounder that can bowl a few overs?

Mitch Johnson - We ain't winning the ashes without him, simple as that!!

Nathan Hauritz - Best spinner we have in the country, took a 5 - fa, so showed the selectors up with that, and then backed it up with a First Class century.

Any ways, my test XI:

Watson
Hughes
Ponting (Captain)
Clarke
Hussey
Haddin
Smith
Hauritz
Johnson
Hauritz
Bollinger

12th man: Peter Siddle

Fan of Hauritz much... :p
Certainly don't need two of him....

There aren't any other form batsmen in the country to replace him, that have experience. Marsh has only played a few games.. so unless you bring in McDonald then you have no one left.. and given that we already have Watson as the 5th seamer, there is no point having Ronald in the team.

You suggest we leave North there? Anyone we put in there will be better. We can put names in a hat, pull out out and they'll be better. With McDonald at least you have a no 6 batsman, who can bowl huge amount overs allowing Watson to focus more on his batting. There'll be no pressure to bowl Watson for alot of overs if at all.

I don't want to see Siddle, Johnson, North or Doherty within km's of the WACA. Take out a restraining order to keep them away...lol!

In innings of 1/517 and 6/551 we've had one bowler who's bowled decently in the two innings......Harris. Rest we just smashed all over the place. From those scorecards alone common sense selecting says there has to be big changes to the bowling. You go "outside" the regulars and look until you find. Common sense selecting is the problem though.

A team to win in Perth:

1. Phil Hughes
2. Shane Watson
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Michael Clarke
5. Mike Hussey
6. Andrew McDonald
7. Brad Haddin
8. Steven O'Keefe or Steve Smith
9. Mitchell Johnson
10. Ryan Harris
11. Travis Copeland

McDonald at 6 does a lot- he is in great form with the bat and his bowling relieves Watson, and allows us to play Smith or O'Keefe as young spinners. He also steadys the ship and allows us to play Johnson to strike.

Hughes for Katich seems obvious, and I'd be inclined to give a young quick a go in favor of Siddle. Bollinger lacked penetration, MJ must play for us to have any chance to take 20 wickets

Do we even need a specialist spinner for perth if smith comes in for north?

i don't see the point in bringing hauritz in, for example, and having him smashed left, right and centre in perth where even warney had a record a bit lesser than his stellar best:

37 wkts @ 36.45

vs 708 @25.41

if warney had a hard time, bringing in hauritz or leaving doherty in is just pointless
get smith to tie up one end with bowling a few trundlers later in the match but bowling a specialist spinner for the overs needed could see them smashed to all areas.
better to bring in a quick perhaps?

Hodge
Watson
Ponting
Clarke
Hussey
Khawaja
Haddin
Siddle
Hauritz
Harris
Copeland

We probably can't win the ashes but need to give it a crack. If Tait and Lee were fit/form I'd play them and give them a mandate to attack the body. But for whatever reason I can't see them playing for their respective Shield sides.

Copeland has to play.

Johnson's confidence is shot. Can't play.

Hauritz has to come back in.

Hughes isn't in form. I'd play Hodge. Not a long term option but we need to think short term for this test.

Out: Ponting (captaincy has been utterly pathetic - field placements have been at best questionable); North (gone), Doherty (not his fault directly); Katich (injured)

In: Khawaja, Hughes, Hauritz (gets in with a ton), Ferguson

Hughes
Khawaja
Clarke
Hussey (c)
Ferguson
Watson
Haddin
Hauritz
Harris
Siddle
Bollinger

watson
hughes
ponting
clarke
hussey
khwaja
haddin
johnson
harris
hauritz
hilffy
