Outs:
  • Simpson
  • Ever playing a players who has missed >month of football or played 1 game in a month of football type situation at AFL without getting and proving match fitness at WAFL level
  • any player who can only play 70% game time
  • Nelson - permanently (we either fluke things this year or start planning for the future where he has no position)
  • Jones - bad for weeks now
  • Cripps until fit
  • Rotham - playing like a pansies but should be pushed to wing

Ins:
  • Yeo to half back until match fit (made all Australian as half back)
  • XON - our BOG in WAFL
  • West or Gaff - we need more midfield rotations
  • McGovern
  • Petrecelle
  • Kelly/Shuey to play half forward at times
  • H.Edwards to play regardless of Barrass and McGovern - he becomes the lock down and he needs game time, still our most promising young player besides O.Allen

We've probably only worked out now that Rotham and Foley are not up to it. Nelson - I think we've all know for a while but injuries meant he had to play. The whole premiership window makes it hard to manage this - when that window is open, developing of players is hardly considered and it's all about the now (and so it should be). I don't think Harry Edwards is up to it either. Naish has to improve his disposal to be a serious long term player (he's been good though).

I suspect we're going to turn over a lot of those youngish players this season. Give them a decent shot, have a look at them, and if they're going to be fringe players at best, delist. Keeping dong it until you find a gem.
Rotham has gone backwards. Might flourish if surrounded by better players and better protected from the ball coming in under no pressure from the midfield.
Foley has shown glimpses and may still develop.
HEdwards was always someone who we won't see properly what he's got until he's about 23 and has 50 games in him. He's one of those.
Nelson is of of those types we have too many of. AFL'ish standard. Decent depth for a long injury list at a club with a good list. Can come in and play role A or role B for a match or two, but realistically should never be a 100 gamer. Should end his career with the epitaph 'a good clubman'.
Naish could well be a very very good 3rd or 4th mid.

We just have too many of the 'decent depth', 'good injury cover', 'hope they come good' types. We lack pace and tackling. I guess if you can't catch them, you can't tackle them.

We also have too many of the 'over 30 and always injured' types.

Is there anyone, given a time machine, wouldn't have traded Gov (top player though he is) for two top 10 picks and a $mill less salary off the books when someone like Carlton came calling a few years back?
Shuey has been a fabulous player but is now a mostly injured, much slower, not really a mid anymore player. More a permanent half forward to complement Rioli and Ryan.
Hurn, love the guy, glad he got to 300, but why have him for 2022?
JK, more of an argument for the extra year, but in reality, in the cold emotionless glare of reality, should be having a nice mug of tea on a Saturday afternoon while watching the football on his 100inch LEDTV.
NicNat - almost cried when he went down again. Conditioning team (and NN himself) really needed to work on his weight.
Cripps should be on the outer with Rioli back, Shuey forward when fit and a need to see what Winder and the rest of the potential small forwards have got.

We could and should be looking at a major list turnover this year.
And don't trade anything decent for English.

Nelson is not a decent midfielder at WAFL level, unbelievable that they are playing him at centre bounces ahead of O’Neill and West.
His disposal is to unreliable and also negative from the backline.
We need a new coach, cos he’s the peanut who selects this bloke.
He’s an average to slightly above average WAFL player.

There was a passage of play last night where Sydney had the ball on the city side wing and there was one free Sydney player about 60m out near the boundary, really the only obvious free Swan for the ball to be kicked to and Rotham was the closest to him. Barrass and Witherden had got back as the deep defenders and had space covered for whatever was coming ahead and Rotham, instead of going to the obvious free player he decides to run into a empty pocket with no Sydney player in sight. I don’t know if that’s coaching or what but jeez surely you’re not told to avoid the attacking teams only obvious player by which to attack through as though theyve got herpes. Of course, herpes man was able to receive an easy, uncontested mark and set up an easy goal.

Rotham is absolutely lost out there at the moment, he needs to go back to the two’s for his own good.
We should get our own herpes man

Naish’s disposal was awful yesterday, particularly in the first half. The fact his disposal efficiency was acceptable is proof that disposal efficiency is a flawed measure.
He's just about the only eagle that touched the ball in the first half, give him a break

Ditto Gaff, ditto Priddis. Unfortunately the average footy punter is a simpleton and wants to only trade out shit players (and trade in guns).

I don't want English. In fact, I don't want anyone who is reasonably obtainable. Players like Walsh, Smith, King, Rowell etc are unobtainable. Anyone who is 25+ is too old. That means draft and hopefully we find one of those top tier franchise type players.

If we look at where we are in 4 years, we probably only have Oscar, Dugg, and Barass, and Kelly, and maybe 2 or 3 player makes it through. That leave Yeo, Sheed, Darling, Gov, Gaff etc to be in charge of transition.

He's been good, but his disposal makes me wonder if he's a true long term option. If you can't hit targets by hand and foot in todays game, you'll find it hard to get a game.

The love for Naish is probably getting a little over the top around here, but on last night's game and his disposal - it's a bit hard to hit a target when no one in the team is running into space for you presenting an option. He was pretty much on his lonesome early on busting a gut and actually giving us some run.

I see where the criticism comes from because he did directly cost us at least one goal with a ridiculously risky kick into the corridor and you have to take responsibility for execution but on the basis of last night's game alone - I'd say the lack of support from teammates was a big factor in that inability to execute.

Of course you can make that excuse for any player who ends up with the ball in their hand but I'm prepared to back a guy who at least gave more effort than his more lauded, more experienced, 900+ credit rating teammates.

I agree with what Flarn is saying above.

Naish. He's not the savior, but at least he's having a crack. Unlike most.
And it seems that he and Witherden (again far from perfect in disposal) are the only two who want to run with the ball and look forward with it rather than chip backwards or sideways to make sure the opposition can all get defensive side and in position.
Only those two look to take it on and whose first instinct is to move it forward before the opposition set up.
Going by match, Champion Data has the WC players making the most metres gained...
Naish 2nd, 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd
Witherden DNP, 2nd, 4th, 1st, 1st

Out: Kennedy (managed), Rotham, Langdon
In: Waterman, McGovern, Petruccelle

Backs: Hedwards, Barrass, Gov, Hurn, Witherden, Duggan, Foley
Mids: Kelly, Shuey, Yeo, Redden, Naish, Nelson
Rucks: Williams, Dixon
Forwards: Darling, Waterman, Ryan, Rioli, Cripps, Jones, Petch
Sub: Langdon
Traveling: Rotham
Emergencies: O’Neill, Hough

Keep the changes to a minimum. No point dropping the guys that came in underdone, we have to persist with them now. Which means no room for O’Neill or SPS, not that the latter really put his hand up.

Waterman for Kennedy, who can probably do with a rest after back to back six day breaks.

Gov for Rotham, Port have some tall forwards so we can afford to play all three talls.

Williams gets another crack, against an inexperienced ruck in Hayes he should make the most of it. Strnadica is keeping the pressure on.

Hough in for Hurn if he also needs a break.

outs -Edwards , Rotham, Jones , Darling

ins -Gov , Hough ,XON , Waterman ..

Not bad…….

I’d be looking at dropping someone else apart from Jones. While he didn’t have a great game against Swans (who did) he offers more than Landon, who would be the one I drop.

I see Jacko, of the Glen variety, is on the ‘drop Darling’ case now. Reported in The West online version.

Like for like , Darling as the first credit out to send a message to the untouchables ..Lift or earn your spot in the WAFL ..

Yeah loyalty is an admirable thing but I think we are almost getting to the point where one of the 'untouchables' needs to be touched on the shoulder ... 'back to the WAFL mate and prove to us you're still a champ'.

Again I say, selection depends on what is the 2022 strategy? Looks like it is win as many games as possible ... with the best result realistically being limping into the eight only to crash out. (Again, I ask does anyone really think – even on a good day – we could beat Melbourne?) I'd rather think we are looking at having a red hot go at the 2023 GF by challenging the untouchables and giving some of the many others a decent go (like Naish, XON, West, LEdwards, HEdwards, Hough, BWilliams, Dixon, Jones, SPS, Joyce, Clark, Chesser and maybe even Winder or Strdanica). At worst we finish a few spots lower (and get a better draft pick) but also have solid evidence as to which fringe players are worth keeping. (And no I'm talking of anything that would resemble tanking. Just 'managing' and rotating the A listers or if not playing well sending them to the WAFL.)

PS: 'untouchables' to me not only means the A listers like JK, JD, Hurn, Gaff, TK, Sheed, Redden and Cripps but also Nelson and Cole and to an extent Rotham, Petrocelle and Waterman. That latter five have had enough games to show if they have 'potential', if they might be 150 game players. And right now they aren't consistently showing enough to deserve selection ahead of others who should get 10-20 games to show their wares. If they go back to the WAFL and consistently tear it up ... great.

I'm just concerned that Simmo's main takeaway from 2018 is that Shuey and Yeo are unstoppable superstars. An equally important lesson, following Pridda, Mitchell and Petrie retiring, is that we're a much better side when everyone in the midfield can actually run.

In west coast’s defence you’ve been shafted by covid, you’s will be right once you get your full squad up and running.
We thought that last year too, but it never happened. Truth is the youngsters want it more than the skilled older players.

And that is a big problem when the youngsters are not AFL level players.
