I'd say the "froth" over Naish is due to his endeavor as much as anything. He was hands down the only midfielder who actually TRIED all game.

It's not hard to win fans when your effort stands out. That's what people care about the most. Skills and talent take a backseat if you're giving 100%. Look at West, and XON last week. They the new GOATS, when in reality they are borderline state level talent, but who cares.

As for Nelson, criticizing him is fine but gee whiz some of the things that get pointed out on here and FB are so far off the mark it's not even funny.

Legit knocks on Nelson

  • One dimensional, limited player
  • Hasn't improved in years, borderline hit his ceiling in 2015.
  • Doesn't provide anything offensively. Doesn't have an actual set role in the side, just a fill in depth player that shouldn't be playing.

Things i read which are completely wrong
  • Soft
  • Doesn't have a crack
  • Constantly turns it over with clangers
  • Is horrible.

The fact of the matter is Nelson is and has always been handy depth. If he's playing and we've got legit other options (like XON) then that's on Simpson and the MC. Not Nelsons fault. I'd take the 5k match payment every day of the week if i was him too, good on him. What's he going to do, drop himself?

No way.. if the match committee wont drop him he wont do it himself. If someone paid me 5k a week to run around 5 metres behind someone for 110 mins a week id be out training in a heartbeat….

I think it comes down to the fact that at age 26 he is still a below average footballer… the stats dont lie….
Below average for his career in
Disposals
Contested possessions
Clearances
Score involvements
Kicks
Metres gained
Tackles
Ground ball gets
Uncontested possessions
Handballs

And many more ..

Out: kennedy (rest), rotham
In: waterman, XON

Yeo to be shifted to defence for a few weeks.
So Yeo played a fair bit of defence on Friday, and our attacking mids got pantsed.

A lot of that is effort, but also having shuey, TK and a Redden/rioli/Nelson isn't working. (Plus Williams, who plays as an attacking ruck)

We need to get the few mids we have who actually pressure and tackle around the ball (rather than just running forward of it like the other guys). We are so unbalanced at the moment in the middle. Sure, it could go too far the other way, but all out attack without Nic is pointless (it is probably pointless with Nic, but he at least gives us a chance).

Since Simmo apparently talked about resting JK for the Sydney game, maybe a good chance he gets rested for the away trip.
JW is deserving of a recall imo. Maybe also Dixon spending more time as a focal point up forward.

Other players have worse DE. Some very good players.

But fans focus on Nelson for some reason.

Let me clarify my position on Nelson:

I'm not a hater. I get why people don't like him but at the same time I think it's short sighted (i.e. stupid) when people blame him, or Masten, or McGinnity etc for losing games. Games are generally won and lost between the top 5-6 players of each team.

Specifically on Nelson - a lot of hate has gone his way but he's just a fringe player who makes no difference. Our problem between 2019 and 2021 has been our players for whatever reason did not want to contest the ball. Our game style was such that we could win games even though we lost the contested ball count. But it was a slippery slope and conditioned players not to contest. Simmo couldn't see that.

I roll my eyes at people who shout and rant at the TV over Nelson when in reality the issue is something else.

But in saying that, it's a fact that Nelson butchers the ball all the time. 1 game where he didn't (as that poster pointed out), doesn't change the long term trend.

This is not the players. It's how they've been coached and instructed to play.... some of them for their whole careers. So sure, some aren't putting the hard work in to get that balance, but this is what you get when you coach players not to prioritise pressure and attack on the footy.

It's probably too late to turn the ship around with the older players (unless there is a new coach), and we don't have any reasonable A-grade prospects. That means our best and quickest way back is bottom four and the draft.

Would definitely need Dixon there too. Darling and Waterman as a combination is quite short.

Out -

Edwards - obvious out for McGovern
Darling - has just been terrible in his games back, doesn’t even offer a contest, has he forgotten how to play? Does he want to play?
Nelson - if he isn’t the problem he certainly isn’t the solution
Langdon - lacks class and ball finding ability
Jones - very little impact since the first game
Rotham? - is there anyone else, despite jokes about hbf’s we hardly seem to have any

In -

McGovern - obvious
Waterman
O’Neill - should not have been dropped
SPS - far more class than Langdon or Jones
Hough
Edwards? - back in instead of Rotham, bit of a toss up really

No doubt Simpson will keep Darling in for synergy and ‘credits in the bank’ and the sub par efforts will continue

I think this is an excellent point.

We had a squad that had a successful style but that style is now outdated. It seems the coach and/or the players have not been able to find or adapt to a new game plan.

The new manic chaos style better suits teams with faster (younger?) players enabling them to beat teams with slower (older?) but more skilled players. If so would our future be brighter teaching our young/fast players to embrace the chaos game?

(And just accept that our slow old champions are now dinosaurs. Won us a flag … thank you very much … goodbye.)

No way would I rest Kennedy this week when this could be our only chance of having a win for weeks. He can rest in another game.

Jones is a concern, I don't know if Simmo is trying to play him back into form, he had one fantastic game in round 1 but has been very quiet in the last 2 games. If he keeps his place I hope he had improve his output otherwise he'll just be selected based on credits just like a lot of the senior blokes lol.

And if as you suggest it 'could be our only chance of a win for weeks' (and I agree) it means our season is shot anyway. Might as well start the rebuild now.
