I'd say the "froth" over Naish is due to his endeavor as much as anything. He was hands down the only midfielder who actually TRIED all game.

It's not hard to win fans when your effort stands out. That's what people care about the most. Skills and talent take a backseat if you're giving 100%. Look at West, and XON last week. They the new GOATS, when in reality they are borderline state level talent, but who cares.




As for Nelson, criticizing him is fine but gee whiz some of the things that get pointed out on here and FB are so far off the mark it's not even funny.


Legit knocks on Nelson

• One dimensional, limited player
• Hasn't improved in years, borderline hit his ceiling in 2015.
• Doesn't provide anything offensively. Doesn't have an actual set role in the side, just a fill in depth player that shouldn't be playing.

Things i read which are completely wrong

• Soft
• Doesn't have a crack
• Constantly turns it over with clangers
• Is horrible.

The fact of the matter is Nelson is and has always been handy depth. If he's playing and we've got legit other options (like XON) then that's on Simpson and the MC. Not Nelsons fault. I'd take the 5k match payment every day of the week if i was him too, good on him. What's he going to do, drop himself?

Let's be honest. The one standout trait Nelson had was that he was a bit of a hot head, which our list is sorely lacking. Some blokes need to start a bit of a fire to get themselves going.

Once the coaches knocked that out of him there wasn't really anything else of substance left. Nelson, being a kid, has just fallen into line over the years.

Interesting that our last player who loved a niggle in Schoey, didn't seem to get on well with the current management either...

Could be interpreted as we’re gonna stick with our A listers until they perform.

Or … we’re gonna play them (in the AFL) until they get match fitness. Then we’ll have … synergy.

Here’s a novel solution. Play returning players in the reserves until their form and fitness warrants a promotion to the ones. So pick on form (not name).

Using the age they will turn at some stage in 2022, I have us with 6 veterans (turning 30 or more this year), 14 fully developed (under 30 but over 23 at some stage this year) and 2 developing (22 or under). The AFL use the 22 or under so that seems a suitable cut off.

NOT A SINGLE PLAYER WHO WILL BE 21 OR YOUNGER COME YEAR END!



So will we expect an older team for Port? Gov for Harry is one of developing for a veteran.

I think Simmo is cooked. This synergy stuff implies that he thinks the only problem is that the players haven't adjusted to the new gameplan yet. It's similar crap to what he kept saying last year, that we just had to get better in the contest (ie win contested ball even when we were outnumber 3v2 at most contests as the plan was worked out). I think he's going to keep playing the best team on paper until it is mathematically impossible to play finals. Maybe then he might think about developing some of the young players.
