Prediction Changes for Round 8 vs Carlton

I KNEW people would be calling for Thomas to be dropped. Did no one notice he played up the ground? He did a lot of things like setting up inside 50s.
He needs to lower is eyes an look for options. I remember atleast 3 times he blazed away last night when he had not just one but 2 free team mates screaming for it.

I think Mihocek's versatility and mobility plays into that sort of thinking. I for 1 certainly wouldn't mind seeing it trialled for a few games.
The only issues are it reduces our ability to go small if we think that's the way to go and it complcates rotations, which might be difficult without a runner and lead to stuff ups, eg. Moore has a rest, cox comes off the bench, replaces reid and reid moves back. Also juggling the rotations so that you don't end up with one of them playing low percentage game time, thus contributing to general fatigue.

But I'd give it a go.

Last year Thomas seemed to be able to take every half chance he was getting around goal. This year he seems to be unable to snag any of those half chances.

That scoreboard impact reduction is the most obvious issue, well that and his reduced tackle/defensive impact. Other than that he's not too far off his 2018 form. Not getting the midfield time he did last year and not getting hit up on those F50 leads. Can't see him getting dropped given there is no VFL opportunities for an alternative player to make the case.

When people debate whether we can fit all of Cox, Mihocek and Reid in the one side you have to factor de Goey in also as he's basically a de facto key forward such is his ability and presence within f50.

For it to work de Goey seemingly would need to increase his midfield minutes and with Adams set to miss with injury an opportunity has presented if we wish to trial it.

So if we want to play the 3 talls:

Out:Adams(inj)
In:Cox

If we don't:

Out:Adams(inj)
In:Aish

I don't think you're giving due credit to JDG and Mihocek's ground ball abilities.

Gotta agree with this. We looked awful with all of Cox, Reid and Mihocek playing in the JLT. The mix we have now is spot on, can’t really mess with that, even if Reid will be stiff to be dropped when Cox returns.

I don't know that you can draw too many conclusions from the JLT. We were really ordinary across the entire team early season. We still haven't hit our straps but our form is still way better now.

Agree, he costs us when he refuses to pass to a teammate in a better position. I reckon he did himself a bit of damage with the coach when he didn't pass to Phillips and kicked into the opposition directly in front of him.

He was playing with the efficiency of Luke Bruest last year. The question is whether he is good enough to get back to and maintain last year's level of deadliness or whether last year was just a freak year where the dice kept rolling for him. Hope he is good enough, because his hands are super clean.

Mihocek going nowhere anytime soon would be guess.

Better output than Cox last season and Reid historically when played forward and done it in his first season.

His contribution has been outstanding to date and no one saw it coming.

Better runner across the ground and offers an ability that neither Cox or Reid does as a forward and that's being able to regularly create scoring opportunities for himself gathering the ground ball.

Marking not to shabby either and not for the first time this time season I thought he had one of those almost games last night whereby he nearly managed to grasp some difficult marking opportunities. His luck will change and 1/2 goal games will turn into 3/4.

For mine it's a case of Cox or Reid if a decision needs to be made.

Cox the better relief ruck option whose sheer size makes him a difficult forward proposition.

Reid the smarter and more well rounded footballer.

They don't have to all be on the ground at once though. At the moment we start 5 talls. They all play about 85% game time. If we want to maintain our preferred structure, we actually need to have a tall on the bench to rotate on for resting talls. If you do the maths it works. At the moment one of our bench spots is effectively used to cover rotating talls, we use a small to do this covering and go in shorter when a tall is resting, but why not just use a tall to cover talls.

Without runners, it'll be bloody hard to make it work, and get the rotations right but worth giving a go. We lose the flexibility of going small if desired, but we gain the flexibility of going tall if desired.

Imo it won't work. We've been down that track before and it failed. There are several reasons.

I'll be happy to revisit this thread in 3 months and say I was wrong if I am.

No question Cox plays before Reid. And theres a snowflakes chance in hell Reid plays before Mihocek. It ain't happening.

Can we have this please:

Out: mercy
In: cruelty.

We need to hurt them then keep hurting them every minute until they are a quiveting jelly. Wrap our teeth around their necks rip out their windpipe and shit down their throat. Annhilation is the only acceptable goal.

I think it's worth a crack if your talls are good and flexible enough. 6 talls in the 22 certainly worked for WCE last year.

It changes everything in the f50. The set up that has worked for the past 12 mths. I can't see any reason to roll the dice.
