Fly hasn't done much wrong in his time at Collingwood but I'm slightly perturbed by the omission of Allan and continuing feeling that unless you're elite like Nick or are filling a specific position we are light on for (Reef) he's not a coach keen on developing raw young talent at AFL level and persisting despite the expected ebbs and flows of performance.

While he'll have his justifications and sure I get it we're all in this season with dads army, singling out a 3rd game player and omitting him, when a whole host of experienced players also failed the test against GWS, seems overly harsh to me.

He could have set him the challenge of making amends against Port and seeing how he responds but has elected not to take that route. Other coaches would have I'm sure.

With the WHE injury opening up the spot for Houston and De Goey unavailable not sure I love the lack of faith shown in Allan after 1 game.
Not many Coaches have Fly’s development background- he knows what he’s doing.
Allan choosing to not to chase at key moments was damning, and when you have no credits in the bank, getting dropped is a foreseeable outcome.

If that’s true, how do you explain Lipinski??? 🤣

There were a couple of poor efforts, where he ambled instead of sprinting after Callahan at stoppage. I dare say they were not helpful in making the case for him to retain his spot.
With his wheels he could have at least put pressure on Callahan in both instances, to dispose of the ball, rather than penetrate deep into the forward line.

I’m a big fan but Ed can’t let himself down at important moments.

You could find half a dozen piss poor attempts from Lipinksi but he's a walk up start 🤷‍♂

If Lippa was as inexperienced as Ed, he would have been dropped. Conversely Ed would not have been dropped if he was a 100 game player.

Ed is smart enough to know he can’t get away with stuff the experienced and seasoned players can.

I like backing out coaching staff in, but surely the approach would be to highlight it in private on camera, teach him how to make it better and give him a chance this week to rectify it rather than drop him

Watching the Hawks and imagining Reef picking up Chol or Lewis when he returns is a frightening prospect. Even Darcy and Naughton are going to be a big handful. Seeing Frampton in the VFL looking so assured and getting a fist to the high balls with ease made me wince.

Darcy is a going to be a handful for every defender.

Why is the youngster being held to a higher standard than the veteran? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

I put it to you that dropping Lipinski would send a much clearer message to the whole team about effort expectations than dropping Allan.

Hawks look hardened to me - Watson breaking tackles with ease etc

Honestly thought Rowey was going to be a gun when I was a kid 😂
I was a bit older than a kid and thought exactly the same, was devo when he was delisted.

Few years down the track I realised he was very soft and his heart wasn't in it.
Goes without saying hopefully I'm wrong but there's a current much vaunted youngster that is stuck in that phase.

Fly is on his way to losing my trust in his judgement.. how da heck do you drop young Ed .. yet Limpdicski is still in the side.
Won't be solely a Fly thing - the other coaches will have input - if the head coach routinely overrules the assistants there'll be issues within the group (I'm not saying that's the case here)

Sorry if this has already been posted, but just in case if not ..... some might find this interesting like I did.

How different each Round 1 AFL side looks compared to last year

Collingwood

Total Changes: 6
Missing from Round 1, 2024:
Jordan De Goey (injury), Charlie Dean, Will Hoskin-Elliott (injury), Ashley Johnson, Fin Macrae, Oleg Markov (injury)
Playing Round 1, 2025: Tim Membrey, Daniel Houston, Harry Perryman, Ned Long, Lachie Sullivan, Reef McInnes

Port Adelaide

Total Changes: 8
Missing from Round 1, 2024:
Zak Butters (injury), Charlie Dixon (retired), Francis Evans (Carlton), Daniel Houston (Collingwood), Todd Marshall (injury), Esava Ratugolea (injury), Ivan Soldo, Brandon Zerk-Thatcher (injury)
Playing Round 1, 2025: Joe Richards, Jack Lukosius, Joe Berry, Mitch Georgiades, Josh Sinn, Logan Evans, Jase Burgoyne, Jordon Sweet

And if you don't read the link but want a quick stat, I thought to add up the totals and do the average.

200 players across 18 Teams. Average 11.11 players in Round 1 across the board .. whether they were injured last year, new to the club, dropped on form, included on form. etc

Things like soft or lazy get thrown around too much. Often it's that the bloke is slow to think and react and does so hesitantly, which is often worse - how do you overcome that?

You have to be the hardest of keyboard warriors to call an afl player “very soft”.
