To be fair to those 2, they weren't alone on that day in 2017
Probably not the best example, but they have certainly gone MIA in other big finals, except for the 2009 SF which was Mackay's best game in his career. Despite playing 2-3 half-decent games a season since then, the club clearly is living off that game in the hope he'll turn into something.

So his form at SANFL level doesn't matter, even though it's been better than Mackays ??

To be fair, no one SANFL form matters when it comes to AFL selection. You cannot force a selectors hand by performing down there just due to the step up being too great for it to mean anything, all you can do with the SANFL is show little signs that you have a future beyond toiling in the reserves, then just take your chances when they inevitably come.

If we lose this it'll have very little to do with selection.

Our team is actually better than it was last week despite the inclusion of Dave.

The issue is that Mackay increases the number of non entities in the team, putting strain on the rest of them, then the game falls apart.
I’m all for rewarding effort, but if the players selected can’t play AFL standard of footy, then its like being a few goals down before the game even starts. We’ll need a big start to win this one, because I can guarantee our game will break down in the second half.

Surprisingly I'm not against this at all. Even if it is a showdown. We are not winning a premiership this year and we're certainly not winning a premiership with Mackay and Douglas. I'll happily take the short term pain of a showdown loss if it brings about change for long term gain.

It won’t, their selection is proof that our coaches, Pyke at the helm, absolutely, 100%, DO NOT GET IT. They won’t. It won’t happen until Pyke is gone. He enables those below him.

Regardless that Mackay played well last week and had written he was 2 nd best behind otten

It has been clear to pyke and anyone like him that Jones isn't ready don't stress he will be but not this year after all he is only 18

Pyke wants to win

As for selections, looking forward to Douglas costing us another Showdown! Disgraceful that the likes of Jones and Wilson wallow away in the SANFL while constant disappointments and cooked seniors in Douglas and Mackay keep getting gifted games. Does the club really think that we'll win a flag due to experience even though those two especially repeatedly s**t themselves on the big stage? I would've thought the GF and last year's Showdown was proof of that but they have no memory or foresight.
All for showing players who have been loyal to the club but after nearly 4 weeks of seeing Douglas play, you can see he is DONE, there is noway he will be offer another 1 year contract so why play him at all. Yes, in training you can see he can still can run and chase but under game pressure his reflex is shot as so fumbles and then ends up doing a hack disposal or pass the ball to someone who is under more pressure.

Or maybe we don't get it ??

This is my tip:

Milera to replace Davis up forward.
Mackay to replace Smith at half back

And wait for it............

Smith to replace Gibbs in the middle, you heard it here first

That’s the only way I can accept Mackay back. Given Seeds and Atkins form he’s not playing on the wing.

He aint a forward that’s for sure.

If we move either of those 2 from the wing to fit in Mackay I give up.
I think you may be right that Mackay releases Smith, but he will play more on a wing with a little as an inside mid.

Think Milera will form part of the midfielders who rotate forward with Sloane, Greenwood & Brouch. Milera to particularly up his inside midfield time later in the game when players are tiring.

Just don't understand why we are not playing Jones instead of Douglas. Mystifying!

Port have their strongest team of the season on paper... so hope JJ pulls up ok, as we need his firepower to support Tex with Lynch out.

Douglas is on par with thommo in his final year. The difference is the club had the courage to drop thommo to the sanfl for most of the year. The fact Douglas and Mackay are still wheeled out is an indictment on our recruiting or development. Likely our development under our current coaches and match committee.

It's not an indictment on either of those 2 things.

Sadly, you’ve misjudged the ‘change’ in our selection policy. Especially now that we’re on the downhill run to September. Expect more of the same my friend, more of the same.
Disagree, but we will see.

Not really, Thompson couldn't even run at all......

Horrible selections, what are these guys smoking?
We can't win. Port might lose because they're ordinary, but that's our best hope.

See this kind of posting makes me smile.

We have a better team than we did last week by some margin and we are playing an inferior opponent.

The selection of Mackay, more so Douglas actually, is wrong..... but it shouldn't make a difference to the result. We've beaten them 7 of the last 8 times for a reason.

Is the theory we have brought DMack in for some more pace.

You look at Port with Boak, Ollie, Ebert and Rocky four plodders.

Mackay doesn’t have pace any more than he has an elite leg. Both pure fantasy. 2-3 times per game Mackay finds himself in a position where he’s already at full speed and taking a handball from a contest where everyone else is mostly stationary. He looks fast relative to everyone else in the vicinity. Fact is that has never burst from a pack or run down an opponent for a tackle. He has recorded hundreds of pressure acts whilst not quite getting to averagely paced players though. The best bit though, is even with this perceived ‘pace’, Mackay maxes out at looping a ball to a contest or empty space 8 times out of 10.

At this point of the season, I do not begrudge the selection of David MacKay over Chayce Jones.

The coaches and selectors would have enormous faith we are a premiership thread and they are picking a team to win every game.

We are sitting fifth with a half a dozen winnable games left in the season putting us on 14 to 15 wins and a top 4 chance.
