Its a weird phenomenon around here…

All our faults, all our failures and all our poor showings just seem to get blamed on our youth..

Not by all in here but by a fair few at times..

How guys like sloane, keays, laird, crouch and smith have gotten away with their overall performances in the past two years is beyond me..

I cant even think of the last great game brodie smith played.. a game where I thought after it “without Smith today we wouldve lost”..
the Bulldogs one at Mars last year maybe?..

These are the guys that are meant to be the experienced, and thus more consistent performers, who lead all comers each and every week.. but you have no idea what youre gonna get from them week to week.

The game has gone past sloaney and smithers.. or father time has caught up with them.. just far too slow in everything they do.
I’m not really sure that this is fair. We have all been calling for the coaches to play our young mids through the guts, and in the last 2 games they have done exactly that, and they have been very badly beaten In both. We have all loved watching Berry develop, especially this pre season, however he is a 3rd year player who has been given the second most CBA’s in our team this year and has had 12 and 11 possessions. That simply is putting too much load on the senior guys. Our next most used mid, Schoenberg, has not only hardly touched it, but has been appaling defensively. Seeing his man Jacob Hopper get the ball 80 meters from goal with no one except ROB in front of him is just plain lack of work rate. Soligo has already passed both of them tbh.

We all know that we are throwing these guys into the mailstrom before they are ready, and we also know that this is a direct result of horrendous drafting at the pointy end in the last 6 years, but as supporters we either are going to have to accept getting beltings in the middle for a while, or have higher expectations of the guys that we put there.

as for the rest of the team, I think it’s worth noting that we would have won both of our first 2 games if we had kicked better, and that is despite being pantsed in the middle. We are obviously doing some things right.

The posters on here calling for “more of our youth in the guts” have never wanted that to mean “get rid of laird, sloane, keays and crouch and play the youth..

This is yet another strawman.

They have been calling for a change for the past two years..

Less of the “80% of CB/midfield minutes given to sloane/laird/keays/crouch” and more of our young players thrown into the mix..

Yet, it only finally started to occur around the Carlton game at AO last year.

Up until then it was all the awesome foursome!.

Now, because it didnt happen a year or two ago, we have the issue where the club has finally realised keays is poor in the middle, sloane is cooked and crouch is just hopeless.. we are stuck with Laird and a whole heap of young lads that simply havent got the experience under their belts.. experience they shouldve been given over the last year or two.. not just in the last 8 games.

They’ve gone from one extreme to the next.

And when Laird plays shit, which he has the first two games this season, it makes it even worse.

The whole shitshow probably couldve been avoided if they hadve injected the younger players one at a time in the last two years instead of the 80% sloane, laird, crouch, keays combo and the remaining scraps to the rest of the youth..

In principle I agree, however what we are seeing now is that Berry, Schoey and Soligo just aren’t ready for full time mid roles, and throwing them in 2 years ago might just have totally screwed up their careers.

the real issue is that Jones, McHenry, Hately, Gallucci and Milera should be the midfield now, as that’s who we wasted high draft capital on, with those other 3 slowly lifting their minutes in there until they are ready. You simply can’t miss as badly as we have at the draft and not have the problem we have now.

look at teams like Melbourne and Port. They have drafted elite midfield talent high up in the draft, which has allowed them to slowly bring through guys like Sparrow, Laurie, Pickett etc without totally relying on them like we are. This is crucial to their long term development. I’m not blaming any of those lads as they were drafted in round 2 or later for a reason, they were never going to be able to slot straight into the midfield like Nick Daicos, Horne Francis or Ashcroft.

Simply we are paying the inevitable price for neglecting the midfield through the draft for 10 plus years.

Here is my 2 bobs worth

Out: Parnell (injured), Shoenberg, Smith, Himmelberg, Sloane (injured / sore knee)
In: Taylor, Thilthorpe, Gollant, Jones, Butts or Keane

Now, THE very first thing I would be doing is putting Keays straight to Rozee and tell him I don't want Rozee getting a kick all day

I would also be looking to run Rachele head to head with JHF when he is in the square - make JHF accountable going the other way as that seems to be a big weakness in his game.

I would be instructing O'Brien to vary it up in the centre by thumping a few 30m towards our goal - don't let their mids just rove to our taps

Then somehow we need to free up Dawson to get into the front half off a wing - good clean accurate ball inside 50 will make it hard for Alir to intercept and we saw getting it in fast last week, collingwood totally dismantled ports defence

we CAN win this, but trotting out the same old set ups won't do it - we need to be unpredictable and smart in nullifying their best - ie Rozee / JHF/ Alir and general centre clearance plays

Yeah thats too complicated for Nicks. Might need to demonstrate using some water bottles.

Smith may well be cooked.

He's been awful in two games.

Get out of here with your "tactics".

No place for them in an AFC coaches box.

Any update on Fog? Nothing on AFC website.
We’ll find out tomoz when the injury list comes out..

Or we wont..

They still have a “no tell” policy at AFC..

We neveer found out why Strawnie missed the first SANFL trial game.. all we knew was the week before it our poster “Bigman” was watching training and saw him walk off limping and looking sore.. never heard a word from the club on injury though.

Yeah it's all cloke and dagger these days.

I personally would settle for a team selection where we weren't trying to outsmart ourselves.

What is next, we going to not play a Ruckman?
We basically already don't.

Any chance you could apply for possibly a soon to be vacant position?
