Hawthorn's treatment of Liam Shiels is an interesting contrast

Hodge said he’s just had a baby or about to? Maybe he’s asked for time off
Considering he got dropped after 27 touches or something like that.

Agree fully with your post. Rory has been great but old father time has caught up with him.

In thinking about future captains and the consensus that it will be Doedee, I want to raise a new name which is silly until you think it through and realise it's completely not.

Josh Rachele could be made captain to start the 2023 season.

He'd be very young. Fact.
He'd be new to the club. Fact.
He'd be "jumping the queue". Fact.

These points might be viewed as negatives. But...

Being young means he'll be a potential long term solution and not an interim skipper who is likely retiring through (or before) our best years with this squad.

Being young means he'll be a real Brownlow standard player through our best years with this squad. Think, lead by example or from the front mentality.

Being young means he'll develop alongside and with his team rather than a top down management style.

Being young means he will be intrinsically more open to experimentation, flexibility and have the courage to lose in the pursuit of improvement and winning.

Being brand new to the club allows him clear air to fully and finally move into our new era.

Being new to the club...well who isn't that actually matters in our next flag? Maybe Doedee.

By jumping the queue, he'd still have our leadership group available on and off field.

By jumping the queue, his new captaincy will create a renewed enthusiasm throughout the club and supporters.

And lastly, by appointing Josh Rachele as captain soon. He would be much more likely to become our next 300 game Brownlow medalist and become one of our all time great one club champions.

Methinks...
Personally think thats too much pressure for a kid who’s played just three games. Now Jordan Dawson, on the other hand, could be a very good option. I love Doedee, but I just don’t think he’s taken his game to the next level yet.

Dropping Schoenberg would be such an incredibly dumb response the week after taking away his midfield time.

Giving his midfield time to Sloane, Crouch, Laird, and Keays set him up to fail.

Chuck him in the middle, leave him there week after week, give him the opportunity, and assess in 10 games.

Why is this so hard for selectors?

Schoenberg did that to himself. Not the club, not Nicks etc.

He got most of his CBAs in the first two quarters, and was horrible. Couldn't buy a touch, and got torched by his direct opponent (Parish, then Caldwell).

Maybe just ask yourself whether would would want your child learning the word?

I try not to swear at all but I can't really talk as when I truly snap I use all sorts of words. Have called umpires C in front of children regrettably (and apologised).

I remember that day, everyone in the crowd and on the field turned around, it made the rest of that Auskick game really awkward

The captain should be your best player or at least in the top 3. Dawson seems the logical choice as he should be playing for at least 6 or 7 years. Doedee too injury prone for mine. In time I can see Rachele or Berry as a possible captain.
Don't agree the skipper needs to the best player or even top 3. Obviously has to be part of the long term plan but the captain should be the player with the best leadership qualities, who can communicate the vision and values and bring the boys along for the journey.

My personal choice would be Doedee, not that I know if he has the attributes I mentioned, seems like he does

Captain should lead by his onfield efforts as well as being good off field. If you want the young kids to follow the captain must show them how.

The captain needs to be a leader and someone that you would practically never need to drop on form.

Not a fan of the Mark Neeld Melbourne route of making a 20 year old a captain

I don't think we have many viable options

Ben Keays it is then.

I knew you were old, didn’t realize stonesthrow was even older

Someone check on Bearded Clam
Keays has been our best mid this year… apart from the trial games and the first half of R1.

Like I’ve said numerous times.. thats a damning indictment on the current state of our midfield.

A bloke that gives his all and leaves everything on the field, but has d-grade level skills and decision making, is our best performing midfielder.

Its scary.

Hilarious that a lot of people in here seem ok with it..

He’s better than D grade.
The state of the other mids are not his issue though it’s a club issue.
He’s doing everything he can.

I don't think having one midfielder like Keays is an issue. He's an awesome player, the best midfielder we have currently. The problem comes when you've got all your mids who lack any sort of class or genuine skills.

Nicks can't say we lack polish every week and then trot out a midfield of Sloane, Laird, Keays and Crouch as our main guys. And of the 4 Keays is a clear #1, Laird is #2, so it should be Sloane and Crouch who are making way for some of that polish to come in.

Agree on his lack of experience. Dawson wins on that measure.

Four things I've noticed though about Josh that helps my claims about his potential for captaincy.

Firstly, he appeared to want the Murphy kick after the siren. Shows confidence and courage and preparedness to take responsibility. These are excellent leadership traits.

Secondly, the gut punch last week when he was getting some"attention". Shows courage, warrior mentality and "take no crap" attitude. If he can control this properly, these too, are excellent leadership traits.

Next, he has self belief and confidence to WANT to lead. When I listen to him speak or watch him away from the ball, he presents himself extraordinarily well simply as a young man. Certainly not Mr Cellophane. Very impressive and I expect to only see this grow.

Lastly, Josh performs under pressure. Since being our "prize draftee", he could not have done anything to be more impressive as a young man and footballer. Set shots, snaps, getting up the field to help out...the guys been unbelievable for a first year rookie who hasn't even had the luxury of a couple of SANFL games to find his feet. He has simply gone BANG! into the big time.

I like all the variables here on BF but if you're not excited by Josh Rachele, it's not Josh Rachele's fault.

I'm on the bandwagon...

I think everyone's on the Josh Rachele bandwagon, and he could indeed be a future captain.

... but 2023 is just waaaaay too early for that to happen.

This is a good summation
I re call Walsh’s observations when appointing Tex
One was along the lines of he exuded a “follow me” persona
He was not about self interest and what was in it for him but focused on the club
Gave it his all
Great Captain

What shit me.. I listenned to Nicksy’s presser yesterday..

God I wanted to punch him for his pathetic excuses for Benny and what he did in that last play.. just loser talk and utter bullshit..

He reaconed that Benny missed delivering that kick to either tex or himmelberg because he hasnt yet spent enough time playing with tex and himmelberg to know exactly what tex and himmelberg would do and where they wanted benny to deliver it to them.. reacons that two years hasnt been long enough to build that synergy (i think thats the word he used) between them all to know where to kick to with that last play of the game!..

WHAT AN ABSOLUTE LOAD OF HORSESHIT.

Benny simply did what benny always does on a very regular basis when streaming towards the forward line.. he ****n panicked, didnt have the calmness or poise to make the correct decision and thus he ****n blew it.. kicked it straight onto the chest of an opponent.

GAME OVER.

Nicksy, and the Keays cheersquad in here, can make all the excuses they like but we see exactly what Ben did in those dying seconds of the game atleast a couple or more times in every game from Ben.. at least 7 out of every 10 times ben takes possession and streams toward, or into, our forward 50 the ball either ends up being turned over (sometimes kicked straight onto the chest of an opponent), kicked out of bounds or wasted on a failed wild attempt on goal.

You want to see this club play and win finals again?.. you need to accept the fact that we need our midfield youth to, in the next couple of years, overtake benny.

Or its gonna be a very long decade for us and the club.

Basic facts.. sometimes they can be hard for some to swallow..

Great Captain

It was also at a time when there was omnipresent conjecture about the contract status of all our great players (ohhh for those days..when we had great players…)

Tex was signing contracts a year out from expiry, while every other bastard was playing the club like a violin.

That, among others, was a big reason Walsh chose him.
