I'm not saying that. I'm saying that they've got 23 players to fit into 22 spots. And they had to come up with a plausible reason to land on Knight rather than make a tougher call by dropping a regular player (Kelly, Mackay, Otten) from down back.

You said they were specifically bullshitting Riley Knight. As in, they were coming up with a reason to feed to Riley as to why he was being dropped.

I just can't see it. They might massage the message for Joe Public, but for Riley himself? He would be under no illusions as to why he is out of the team, and what he needs to do to get back in it. Whether it's injury, or form, or God forbid, actually management as they said it was, he'd know why. They wouldn't be bullshitting him.

Seedsman and Atkins have been playing well on the wings. Maybe one of them will move for Mackay but it would be a shame to tinker with something that is working.

Doesn't Mackay often start on the bench? I wouldn't be surprised if all three of them play wing at various stages, with Atkins rotating into the centre occasionally, Mackay rotating down back occasionally, etc.

I'm guessing Mackay is still in the team because he can rotate through the backline in place of Kelly, Doedee and Brown, the wings with Seedsman and Atkins or also play in the midfield and forward line if required.

Yeah he can play in all those positions, but so can I. Doesn't mean he is any good at it

If Knight is being “managed”, why is he an emergency over, say, Hampton? 2 blokes not named Jacobs go down with the flu today and Mackay’s glute / hip issue doesn’t pass the fitness test and Knight’s playing against Carlton.

Nice management.

Manage him. Rest him. Do whatever you like to ensure he is fully fit for big games coming up. Don’t make him an emergency. It’s dumb and makes no sense.

Hampton is injured again.

They would rather Knight rest, but he could play if needed. Sore but not injured.

Changed my mind on thinking Knight was dropped.

After reading what Hart said about Knight and reading that Tex and Sloane will be back next week (and Tex could have played this week) seems the club have learnt the value of resting/managing players.

As many have lamented about last year we somewhat limped into the Finals physically. Could be a lesson learned.

Carlton talking up their chances. Sounds like they're gonna copy what the Pies did.
Just hope we don't bother showing up?

I’ll eat my hat if we make 3 unforced changes for that game.

In: Tex, Sloane, Knight
Out: Fogarty, Gallucci and ???

There is nobody else getting dropped. Selectors relying on an another hammy going perhaps?
Outside of the 2 you named, I think Mackay and CEY are the 2 closest to be dropped. I can't see Knight being named ahead of them though unless the Gooch has a shocker on the weekend.

Collingwood beat us by smashing us in the midfield. Last I checked, Carlton's midfield aren't a scrap on Collingwood's midfield. This version of Kreuzer isn't as good as Grundy and, outside of Cripps, their midfielders are nothing special.

Pyke himself said that "No player likes to be managed. But it's for the long term betterment blah blah blah" So Knight has been told management. He doesn't like it. I'm sure Knight thinks it's a bullshit reason.

Even if the club is right and being cautious with him physically is the best thing. That he's a bit sore and playing will only make it worse. Take the sensible approach after all these injuries we've had. Fine. Good. Everyone could understand that.

Except..... if someone tweaks something in the warm up or gets gastro. Then it's long term betterment be damned! Get in there son and rip it up!

Yes we've established that only Mackay and Otten are capable of playing in more than one role so are always our first go to options as soon as anything opens up

Mackay will probably spend time rotating between the wings & defence. When Seedsman or Atkins are being rested, he plays on the wing. When Milera or Kelly are being rested, he plays in defence. There's plenty of room for a player who is flexible enough to play in both positions, given that very few players spend 100% of their time on the ground.
