Prediction Changes v Port

I'll throw out a very unpopular opinion - but I think the POrt game might Vardy's last, or perhaps the one after

The lad tries and does some great things, but he got pantsed by an underdone Gawn and Ryder tore him a new arseh*le in the game earlier in the year.

If he can't stand up against quality rucks (i don't mean he has to win, just not be dominated) - then he becomes a major liability

We have the two leading candidates for AA ruck in the next 2 weeks - that IMO will be his litmus test.

The Port game should be a great gauge of his development.

It's not the 80s anymore.
You can't just throw guys down back unless you understand the structures.
Opposition coaches eat that shit up
We play a team defence that he has gone back and helped before, he's one of the only candidates left standing if they want someone with some pace.

Hurn in is the other choice, but we lost 2 defenders in Butler and Wellingham, Nelson isn't ready.

I don't think he got pantsed by Gawn at all, 33 hitouts to 42, 2 less disposals, 1 less mark, but 5 more tackles. Admirable effort by a bloke who's 2m against the 2.08m reigning all australian ruckman IMO. I think the selectors will be more incline to leave Vardy in the side over Petrie going forward simply due to his age. Have to remember before this year he had only played 25 games and is getting better every week. Will be a very valuable player going forward given how injury prone Lycett and Naitanui have been of late.

Quoting the raw hit out stats is akin to saying NN only got 35 taps

Gawn was making the melbourne mids swallow it and run free - like NN does when he is on song for us

I agree Vardy may push forward - but he now has to show both a capacity to be dangerous and defend.

IN fact Vardy in an interview earlier is the season stated he was only keeping the seat warm and needed to ensure he was damaging as a forward.

Barring disaster - no one usurps Nic in the middle - so they are all fighting for the forward spot to support Nic in the medium to long term.

Wellingham is an out for me whether injured or nearly fit or fit.

Time for him to go back to EP and go back as a wing who delivers what we gave away a 1st draft pick. We look better with his run and carry and he does break lines when playing wing. He is more a liability defensively

Sheppard Barrass Hurn
Yeo Gov Cole
Gaff Mitchell Jetta
Karpany Petrie Darling
Hill Kennedy Mutimer
Vardy Shuey Sheed

Duggan Lycett Partington Hutchings

Whilst we go in a bit taller, the "smaller" forwards I've selected are all mid rotations and can push up, so a bit of a counter balance there.
If Kennedy doesn't get up keep Redden in and Petrie stays FF
Lycett is definitely a better ruckman fully fit than Vardy and Petrie but they gotta stay. They've been huge for us. I'm not too stressed to give JK one more week if Lycett comes in.
Hesitant to keep Darling in the team, here's his chance to play that 3rd tall role. Must provide manic pressure (which I doubt)'
Not a fan of Mackenzie. I watched the game, his team defence isn't that great and he often makes bad decisions when a chaos ball goes into the backline.

good summary of a good game by Vardy

I have no problem with Lecras playing WAFL. I think he's going to get back to his best and will force his way in, but let him do just that instead of the way Cripps came in and has played poorly since.

Karpany is producing the goods, Lecras, Hill and Cripps should be fighting for the other spot, not Karpany's spot at this stage. The only way I want Lecras in is if he swaps for Masten and then plays midfield, he can actually tackle better than Masten and is also a powerful runner (injury permitting).

Hill can play back, there's not many other options except Hurn, but that's quite a tall team across the board then.

If Le cras has a hip problemhow does that come good after one week off?

I would give him 3 games off, get it right if possible and get him fresh. Even if it takes to round 20 a do a mini preseason.

Those 3 play that game today we'd of lost by 4 goals. Got to stay young and fast, its working. Hurn's only role in our 22 is to take kick ins and we managed that fine without him today, 20 metre chips to the pocket down 400%

Jetta taking kick ins was effective and gets him in the game. Mentioned this months ago as an option we should explore. He can either kick, play on and run around players and then continue to run up field providing a hand ball option.

Working well.

Vardy has been playing hurt ever since he hyper extended his elbow and dragged us over the line last game, no wonder he's got sore shoulders carrying us. Now that Lycett is fit and reaching form it's time for Vardy to be managed, especially v Ryder this week.

Vardy gets a well earned rest.

Out: Vardy (managed), Butler (hammy), Wellingham (hip), Masten (ommit)

In: Lycett, Hurn, Schofield, Partington.

Give Kennedy, Priddis another week, need 3 talls down back v Port.

Gov goes back to defense. Good form from Vartrie means Lycett can get some more match fitness at EP in prep for the run to finals. Barrass backed in and told to dominate Trengove, Emac to Dixon.

Mutimer to be rewarded for good form as Partington should have been last week. We know Kurt can play a role at half forward whereas Masten just looked out of sorts.

LeCras, Priddis, Masten and Hill to find form and fitness with the Royals.

Vardy had an injection for his AC joint on the weekend too... will probably also depend on how that comes up.

Lycett must come back in. The question is then who to drop out of Vardy, Petrie, EMac, Barrass.

I actually prefer Petrie up forward over Vardy, so would be looking to drop Vardy, i appreciate what he's done for us, but let's not pretend he's Dean Cox out there. We've also been badly exposed when he's played against decent rucks.

Even Robert Campbell had 47 hitouts to his 16 on the weekend.

Petrie, Darling forward. EMac to Dixon, Barrass to Trengrove/Whesthoff whoever the tall is the play forward, McGovern to play forward and back depending on situation. Port actually have smallish defence. Expose that with Petrie/McGovern/Darling.

If JK is fit, then drop one of Barrass/Emac and push McGovern back. Would probably be tempted to keep EMac to deal with Dixon.

Looks like it might rain on Sunday so to me we can get away with a smaller backline v Port.

Looks like we will get Priddis, Hurns and Lecra back so we will have to brace for that...

In: JK , Lecra, Hurn, Priddis, Lycett, Partington
Out: Emac , Butler (inj), Wellingham (Inj), Redden, Masten, Vardy (Inj)

Redden and Emac VERY stiff but if Priddis is playing... I cant see us playing Redden as well. Emac with the wet weather he might be out but if Barrass is out over him i am fine with that. We need Gov down back for this game. We NEED Lycett back for this and Vardy looked sore so a week off might see him sweet to take on Freos young ruck the week after. Lecra should not come in at all and should play some WAFL to get his fitness back.

Hurn Gov Shep
Duggan Barrass Yeo

Jetta Sheed Gaff

Karpany Petrie Darling
Lecra JK Cripps

Ruck: Lycett Shuey Mitchell

Bench: Priddis Partington Cole Hutchings

This makes me sad...

Redden won't give us what Priddis gave us at his best, but what he does give us now is a solid performance while opening up more center square time for players like Sheed/Yeo etc., that makes us a far better team. He was good on Saturday.

Agree 100%. Redden has played out of position constantly and on the weekend he showed what he was doing back at the Lions.
