Bears GM Ryan Poles says he’s “bummed” Roquan Smith was traded instead of extended

Posted by Michael David Smith on November 2, 2022, 4:14 AM EDT

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles says he didn’t want to trade linebacker Roquan Smith to the Ravens, but ultimately determined that there was no way the Bears would keep him in free agency next year, and it was better to get something for him now.

“There’s a part of me that’s bummed because this was a guy that I thought was going to be here for a long time,” Poles said. “I felt like we put a lot of effort forward to get that done. We came up short, we couldn’t find common ground, and that’s just a part of this business, which I think we all understand.”

Of course, what that means is that Poles and the Bears weren’t willing to pay Smith as much money as Smith expects to get paid on his next contract. It’s highly likely that the Ravens are planning to pay Smith what it will take to keep him, as they wouldn’t trade a second-round pick and a fifth-round pick for him if they were expecting him to leave in free agency after the season.

NFL teams are increasingly deciding that even the best off-ball linebackers like Smith just aren’t worth the cap space required for a massive contract like the one Smith is surely seeking. Poles seems to have calculated that Smith will soon cost more than the Bears will devote to any off-ball linebacker, and so they’ve traded him to a team that values him more.

Not a bad result upon reflection.
Competitive against a side who’ve spent big while we’ve gone the opposite way shedding anyone worth anything of value.
The emergence of Fields and particularly this rushing effort continues to rise and make me hopeful.
The loss keeps the valuable draft picks at the place we need to be

As awesome as it is surely running like he does so often isn't great for a QB's longevity.
The only way he’ll stay alive is to run. Imagine pocket passing behind that o line 😬

Fields is SO much better when's a threat to run, he had looked like a complete bust up until three or four weeks ago with coaching staff's trying to turn him into a pocket passer, now that they are letting him make plays with his feet he looks like a top 12 QB. The Bears are very fun to watch right now on offense, who would have thought anyone would be saying that this year? Incredible. Imagine what they will look like with some more play makers around him after the 2023 draft and free agency.

Injuries be damned, let the guy run.

Well at least it's not boring!

Far easier to put up with losses when the offense is fun to watch. Id happily take 30-31 losses and finish with a top 7 or 8 pick than finish 7-10 or 8-9

Fields has been great and im all for him using his legs but hes got to be smarter taking hits , sort of like Lamar is. Nothing wrong with sliding or getting OOB a yard earlier.
Lamar and Kyler are amazing evaders. Fields and Allen are more like Newton or Roethliaberger.

Fields isn't as big as those guys, he wont last if he continues doing what he is

I’m actually enjoying this year more than I thought I would. We need to go back to the draft and to see us being competitive and actually score against more fancied opposition is a nice change.
Fields rushing is also exciting to watch but as mentioned the hits will doom him. He needs to add passing ability to his current repoitaire as well.
I still won’t judge him harshly with the awful excuse for receivers and protection he gets though.
Viva la one point losses 🐻⬇️

Justin Fields said he suffered a separated shoulder with a partially torn ligament and called it "basically an AC joint" injury.

Fields took part in the team's walkthrough, but his comments after practice didn't paint a pretty picture. He said he was dealing with pain while handing the ball off and on the follow-through of his throws during Wednesday's practice. Fields added that if the Bears' game was on Wednesday, he would not be able to play. It sounds like he will truly be questionable for Week 12, though it would make sense for the Bears to simply sit him for a week to heal. Trevor Siemian would draw the start if Fields is held out.

The Claypool trade doesnt look good early days. In fact it looks atrocious. I think this is more a reflection of Luke Getsy's vanilla offense however. He needs to incorporate far more easy throws for Fields to make, 2 and 3 targets the past two weeks for a guy you gave up an early second for isn't good enough.

I actually think Getsy is doing ok tbh. After Nagys schemes though I could be setting a very low bar
