Dom Cassisi will be captain, and will be the right choice

Only rumour, but that is what I have heard also. The rumour has it that Junior has been pushed hard to develop his leadership skills, but that the playing group still turn to Dom as the preferred choice.

Just listened to the whole interview, thanks for the links, observations:

G Cornes is a tosser of the first order, even in comparison to Dopey.

Loved the outside information Haw/Geel/WB stuff. R+D based on brains not dollars.
Blair Hartley will be claiming his engagement off his tax...

Dopey: Could you define the changes in your game style? Mark: "Yes I could, ...you want me to do it now?" Goodonya Mark.

Skipper: all of the appropriate people at Port have a "fair idea who it is" - one Captain. "What number does Chad like?" Hehehehe, mischievious Mark at his best.

Testosterone: G Cornes is a tosser of the first order, even in comparison to Dopey.

I have two overwhelming impressions. We are so lucky to have Choco. G Cornes is just a tosser of the first order, even in comparison to Dopey.

Also motlop is the roughie apparently. Personally i find it hard to see how he even gets in the leadership group, but maybe he is a bit more outgoing off field.

Surely you could see that as a media beat up, Motlop would be no chance whatsoever of getting the captaincy.

Well it's the players choice, so who knows what could happen. Motlop works very hard on the field and must be very respected for his name to be put out there at this stage. I don't think he'd make a great captain from a media point of view though, although he is damn entertaining when interviewed!

Spoofa had the good oil on the backroom appointment from Hawthorn. And Dom is the 2008 Fos Williams medallist ...

Yeah I'm not sure where this 'roughie' came from. I don't even think he'd be a future captain. Leadership group, sure. El Capitano? No way, José!

I'm warming more and more to the idea of Cassisi as captain and liking less and less the idea of Chad as captain. Hell, Dom even comes with his own catch phrase!

re Choco's interview on AA, I liked hearing his confidence about the coming season and tend to agree with him: get on us to make the top four.

re The new adventures of Scrunch Face and his sidekick, Syndrome Boy: someone's head is going to roll for that decision.

Was told by a mate who always seems to get good info, to put my money on Dom too.

Re Motlop, I was in two minds like many others when we recruited him, but apparently he's pretty well respected by many of the players, so hence his admittance to the Leadership Group. He's one of my favourite players now. I know a lot of people think he's 'lazy' or 'lairy' but hey, thats a body language thing. Nothing to do with effort, ability and talent.

OK. Is there a player at Port at the moment who can match Motlop for sheer, unadulterated "Daniel Motlop you cannot do that" brilliance. No. Does that make him the Captain? No, well not yet at least...

Probably not. And the thing is, if you try to change such players way of playing, you tend to stifle their brilliance, making them a player that you didn't really recruit for in the first place.

Does that make him the Captain? No

Of course not. However, I have no doubt he has earned his place in the leadership group. The PAFC leadership regime is more than just "who likes who gets in". They actually conduct leadership courses for corporate/business. This I can vouch for. So they would not be compromising their own beliefs just to make someone who is "a good bloke amongst his mates" a Leadership Team member. These boys would be doing a bit of inhouse corporate training too, I'm sure.

He's a different player in the past two years, he is one player who has really benefited from being under Choco. IMO Motlop should be in the leadership group because he has turned his career around, not many players find that easy.

The Dom captaincy contender article from the tiser.

Domenic Cassisi is shaping as a surprise contender for Port Adelaide captain
By Zac Milbank
January 21, 2009

THE first thing a captain needs is the respect of his peers.

And while Domenic Cassisi will never strike Port Adelaide fans as the obvious choice to succeed Warren Tredrea, he has the above quality in bucketloads from his teammates.

"He's not the flashy type like Shaun Burgoyne, Chad Cornes or Peter Burgoyne," fellow Port leadership group member Daniel Motlop noted.

"But he (Cassisi) just does all the little things that people on the outside (the club) don't see. But we see it in here, all the players respect him for what he does.

"He does the little chases and tackles and that's why he's so well respected and he would be a good captain."

True to form, Cassisi's name hasn't been bandied around as much as higher-profile captaincy candidates. And when it has, it has been in a co-captain capacity with Shaun Burgoyne.

But the lack of spotlight is something the consistent midfielder has thrived on throughout his 128-game AFL career at Alberton.

"Not at all," Cassisi answered honestly when quizzed on whether his low profile bothered him.

"Internally I have a good relationship with the coaches and the rest of the playing group.

"I know where I stand among the group. If you've got the support of your team-mates and coaching staff then that's all you need."

This is an indication of Cassisi's single-minded focus to perform his role on a weekly basis for coach Mark Williams.

The man nicknamed "Roo" by former teammates Roger James and Stuart Dew just loves going about his business.

"I know what the coaching staff expect of me each week and what the boys want me to do so I just go out there and do that to the best of my ability," Cassisi, 26, said.

"That's held me in good stead and kept me out on the oval for most weeks to date. Hopefully that continues this year and beyond."

Always reluctant to put himself ahead of his teammates, Cassisi admitted he would love to be chosen as Port's next captain.

But he quickly pointed to the abundance of leaders at Alberton who could also assume the mantle.

"Absolutely," Cassisi said.

"Amongst the leadership group all the guys would be thrilled if they got the opportunity and I'm no different. To be able to captain the club and lead from the front would be exciting and a big job but we've got a number of guys who can do the role.

"We're in a position where we've got a few guys who can do it and as soon as the club decides, we're looking forward to getting behind that person."

Regardless of whether Cassisi receives a tap on the shoulder, the Sandgroper will continue working on lifting the standard of his offensive game to that of his defensive.

"My role within the team is to cause pressure around the stoppages, to chase and tackle," he said.

"That's pretty taxing and takes it out of you a fair bit so it's a matter of having the fitness, and being able to run the other way after you've done that, to be more offensive.

"It's something I try to build on each year and this year it will be an area I will try to improve on."

It amuses me because only people with little knowledge of the PAFC would be surprised that Dom is a strong contender for the captaincy. His work ethic has been outstanding and he's one of the players that plays his heart out despite the score line and the sometimes lack of effort of his teammates.

Just wish Carr hadn't left for those few seasons as I'd love to see him as captain but it won't happen now.

My mail says Choco wants Shaun for captain, but the players want Dom or Chad.

I like Dom for captain!! On a side note. Did anybody hear Craig get stuck into his own player Dangerfield for not doing enough training during his exam time. He acknowledged that the kid said he was busy bu then followed up with, "I don't buy that". I thought that was a stupid thing to say. Different kids feel different pressure during exam times and you never know a childs home and social situation. Dumb IMO

I would have been happy with Chad but I've been a keen supporter of Dom for captain because he's such a great example of determination and consistent effort who can occasionally produce an outstanding bit of play. Opposition sides are not going to be able to stymie his game like they potentially could with Junior and I get the impression that Dom would be a better performer off the field than Chad would be.

Go with the Italian stallion. :thumbsu:

Edit:- Vote for Domenic he'll put a pizza on every plate. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

He was critical of dangerfield for not doing enough training over the whole year, not just exam time. Get your facts right. If a player at your club hadn't done the required work would u want choco to pat him on the back?
