Looking forward to Macnamara's career as much as both these two :thumbsu:...

To be fair - McNamara's start to his career in late 2007 was damn promising.

Played extremely well against Collingwood in the finals - thrown into the deep end because of injuries to Cousins, Kerr and Judd (I still shake my head wondering how we managed to push the Pies to overtime).

It's just that he regressed afterwards.

I still shake my head wondering what would have happened in 2007 if those three played that final. Back2Back.

at 100% fit their midfield had nothing on ours in 07. Cousins, Judd, Kerr were miles ahead of Bartel, Ablett and whoever else in 07.

Midfield wise, I agree... but Geelong 2007 were a well-oiled machine by that stage. They had clear winners all over the ground, and were playing a brand of footy that was simply awesome and even at full strength I don't think we would have gone with them. There was an air of destiny around that Cats team.

My 2007 recollections were that yeah, we were winning games, but our gameplan from 2006 really hadn't evolved and we were over-possessing the ball too much. Lynch wasn't playing with the same confidence he was in 2006, and although Lecca had come into the side and was playing ok, we just weren't clicking like a premiership team should have.

Maybe that was down to never having a fully-fit midfield, I don't know. But I remember being at our home games that season and walking away thinking too many times that it was an ugly win. And don't even mention the final round match against Essendon. Still ranks high in my list of worst ever wins by the club, and thinking about the possibilities for our team if that final quarter didn't pan out the way it did sends me into a rabbit hole of "what ifs?".

As a club they were but they were still the basket case mentally a little bit like Richmond. I believe had we been fully fit and played them in the GF we may have had the edge just because the fear of losing another GF to us might have gotten in a few minds around the place and the weight of expectation. Particularly with our comeback the year before at Skilled...think there were a few Demons there that had the right team taken advantage may have got them.

Also that Essendon game was Sheeds & Hirds last. We had to exorcise a few Demons that day and they wouldn't lay down.

Remember that we played them down at Skilled earlier in 2007 and were soundly beaten, even though we were undefeated to that point and still had Judd and Kerr at full fitness. That game wasn't even in the middle of Geelong's massive run of wins, it was right at the start (the week after they slaughtered the Tigers). Any 2006 demons would have been dispatched that day.

As for them being a basket case... by the finals that definitely wasn't the case. They thrashed the Kangas by 100+ in week one of the finals, just got over the line against the Pies in the Prelim and wiped the floor with Port in the GF. The Collingwood result seems an anomaly but you have to factor in that Collingwood were one of the only teams during their awesome run to give them trouble. Their only loss in 2008 (apart from the GF) was to the Pies by 86 points. For some reason they just matched up well against them.

Being a massive fan of free-flowing footy I'd paid a lot of attention to the Cats that year. With both teams (Eagles/Cats) at full fitness I still don't even think it would have been close.

Yeah but in that game I remember we kicked a couple in a row I think at the start of the 3rd and the crowd went quiet and that was with out Cox, Embley & Cousins (?) so had we shown up fully fit and got a run on there would have been a few players gasping for air.

They were definitely better, we would have had to get in their heads. After the comeback game and our history against them in finals think we could have been the team. Hawthorn should not have got near them in '08 but we saw what happened once a bit of pressure was applied. The Kangaroos should not have been anywhere near the top 4 that year.

It's a pretty good what if, isn't it!

As it was, with a midfield of Priddis in his second year, Adam Selwood, Stenglein and who else... I'd hate to think what the margin would have been if we'd somehow beaten the Pies that night. Mega levels of ugly.

Yeah had we gotten over Port in the Qualifying Final we could have had a Prelim against North and Perhaps Judd on 1 leg could have been taking the phone call to the crowd :p

Yeah, but you forget earlier in their careers A. Selwood and Stenglein were quite handy.
It wasn't until later years when they started to lose their pace that it got a little ugly.

and all of Victoria would have been barracking for Geelong. Not just because they were a Victorian team but because they hated the Eagles, especially since we won a "tainted" flag.
In all I think it would have been a very tight grandy with us on top. But hey I tip the eagles every week and always think of the what could have beens.

1996 should have been our year.

That's the biggest what if for me.

Hell - screw it. I'm gonna write a book about The Eagles. This is gonna be awesome.

I often hear that we missed out in 1996, but when I look at the ladder and the finals series results from that year i can't make head or tail of it? I find it really confusing that we had to travel to the MCG to play the bombers, despite the fact that we finished higher than them on the ladder, and won in the first week of finals which they didn't? can someone explain what happened?

the AFL is what happened.
They had the agreement a game at the G per week during the finals.

mind you we still would have had to have beaten Sydney in Sydney a week later to make the GF.

It was more how well we played when were on that year that made it a missed op in my eyes. But overall we had periods of inconsistency.
