SA may have underperformed at the Champs…but could we look back at this draft and say they produced the best key forward (Keeler), ruck (Barnett) and key defender (Lemmey)?

Maybe the Keeler one is optimistic, but I’ll stick to my ranking for now. Throw in Phillipou as a possible best mid in a few years…

Lemmey is a bigger stretch than Keeler imo. Hayes and Busslinger should have him covered.

I will say, I would still take Lemmey with the view that he'll be a quality forward. That hasn't changed for me.

But having said that, he also has a lot of traits that could make him an elite player at the other end - like so many ex forwards before him. I was hoping to see it in the last game of the Champs, but it wasn't to be. No doubt Busslinger and Hayes would be considered the better defenders now, since you know they actually play that role. But it's something teams would definitely be considering.

SA State Combine...

U18s

Shaun Bennier (193cm, 90kg from North Adelaide)
Oscar Kregar (190cm, 79kg from West Adelaide)
Archie Lovelock (178cm, 72kg from Glenelg)
Kyle Marshall (198cm, 79kg from South Adelaide)
Darcy Minchela (196cm, 75kg from West Adelaide)
Kobe Ryan (182cm, 72kg from West Adelaide)
Brodie Tuck (194cm, 91kg from Central)
Jake Walker (183cm, 80kg from Glenelg)
Lachlan Scannell (186cm, 76kg from Glenelg)

Bit of variety amongst the 18 year olds, combination of Champs performances and height. Kobe Ryan is probably the unluckiest to not be going to the national combine, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a call up - especially with his form over the past couple of weeks. Does everything well, just perhaps doesn't have that elite attribute. Lovelock and Walker are two personal favourites of mine, and both had strong a Champs.

Shaun Bennier has played a classic swingman role both for North and SA at the Champs, he's performing well at either end and that's a credit to him because there's very little consistency there for him. Brodie Tuck is much the same, his numbers at U18 level have been crazy. I'd love to see him get a chance, think he'd be a cult favourite with his attack and could ultimately develop into a Sam Collins like defender. While Kyle Marshall is more your traditional developing tall KPD.

Of the less known guys, Oscar Kregar is an intriguing wing/defender with good size. Darcy Minchella has performed well in the ruck, while also having potential as a possible tall defender. And Lachlan Scannell was a highly rated outside midfielder coming into the season, but has struggled with injury this year.

Mature Aged

Tom Emmett (20 year old 186cm, 86kg from Sturt)
Medium sized forward who showed a bit back in 2020 at U18s level, made his league debut in Round 6 this year and held his spot since. His last 6 weeks has been particularly strong, spending more time inside the forward 50. Strong body and a good mark, provides a presence up forward.

Baynen Lowe (19 year old 177cm, 75kg from Norwood)
Another Tasmanian who has come across to the SANFL, it's definitely a sign of things to come and it might be another who gets on an AFL list because of it. A small ball winning midfielder in the Tasmanian U18s, Lowe has made the move to small forward at Norwood and been a mainstay in the league side - kicking 18 goals from his 13 games while showing off his smarts, work rate and speed.

Rhett Montgomerie (22 year old 190cm, 83kg from Central)
Rewarded after having his best and most consistent season, Montgomerie is one of the best marks in the SANFL - ranking second in the league and third for contested marks. And has the size to translate that to the next level. Will be looking to follow the likes of Wilkie, Leinert and Highmore.

Oscar Steene (19 year old 199cm, 85kg from West Adelaide)
Young developing ruck who has made his league debut this season, and hasn't looked out of place. Played in the U18s last year, athletic enough to get a look in and there should still be upside to come.

Frank Szekely (22 year old 177cm, 70kg from North Adelaide)
Played 30 games in the last 3 years at North, Szekely has had a career best season playing further up the ground and across half back. Has AFL level speed and skills, he's looking a much better overall prospect now that he can create the play. And he's still hitting the scoreboard too.

Lemmey did get reasonable numbers for West under 18s on the weekend. Think he’s still in consideration as a 1st round pick. If not a high second looks cheap. Such a poor start to the season health wise on his previous form you’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

I agree big time re Brodie Tuck, should have played every game at the Nationals, a genuine swingman equally adept back or forward....way way more grunt than Lemmey and Scully.

Yeah playing Centre Half Back before being swung forward in the last quarter, also contested a few ruck contests.

I can see why he didn’t play a lot at the Champs. Grunt only gets you so far and Bennier was doing a good job in the swing man role.

But I think Tuck would be a good rookie pick. He’ll give it his all and just seems like the type who will slowly improve every year. He also has mature aged pick in a few years written all over him though.

Could Lemmey be this year's Emerson Jeka? Or is he a lock to get picked?

I’d be surprised if Lemmey wasn’t picked.

I wasn’t surprised about Jeka. Didn’t have him on my board and he wasn’t anywhere near as highly rated coming into the season. Lemmey was more talented and better performed. So I don’t see any similarities about their paths.

Nick Daicos not #1?

Doesn't look like it.

What’s your thoughts on Corey Tregenza-Cashell mate? Be a good late pick for freo?

Can't really argue with his performances this year. Clunking marks and kicking goals. He's so big and strong, playing U18s as an overaged kid. But he's still raw and new to the underage system, so maybe there's still upside to come in terms of development - maybe not so much physically. No combine invite, but wouldn't be a bad rookie pick.

Your are obviously trying to be funny if you still have Horne-Francis ahead of Daicos after this year, just no comparison on every level and I am certainly no Collingwood supporter.

Perhaps he meant if they were both still in their draft year?
Only way I would be able to justify it

Or maybe Chris25 is from the philosophical school of "one swallow doesn't make a summer"?

I expected it to be Daicos, Ashcroft, Horne-Francis, but I am no talent scout.
