This discussion of the future a year out is exactly what Clarko did with our club legends, no? And at the time Clarko said he expected that same conversation, no?

seems to me this rumour has credibility based on what we know about how the club has been living on from the ‘13-‘15 era.

Let the Clarkson issue not worry you. Was told Tuesday that his contract will not be extended so expect the indecision to continue.

Hope this isn't true - on several fronts.

Firstly boxing yourself in for no reason a full 18 months out of when your decision really needs to be final doesn't seem to make sense to me. We could still pursue other coaching possibilities while making a final decision on renewing Clarko right up to the last minute if we really needed to.

Also if this has indeed happened, telling someone, that has told someone who has then posted the news on a footy forum seems like very bad judgement in at least one hop along the path to this being posted here.

The only way I could make sense of this type of thing is if it is connected to a transition to Sam Mitchell as senior coach and Mitchell had a credible offer on the table from someone (Pies?) that has pushed us to make a future commitment to him, which would have required telling Clarko he'll not be in place after 2022. If so, that kind of thing makes me very nervous. It has worked out quite badly in places that kind of transition has been tried in the past.

Finally, I think Clarko is still the best coach in the business by a fair margin. I don't think we should judge him too much on decisions being made during games this year either (including the selections). We have little to gain from winning games, and Clarko knows it. I've seen nothing that makes me think Clarko has lost the players, or indeed that Clarko has lost any enthusiasm himself. If this is a decision pushed by Kennett , then it is Kennett and whoever is supporting his presidency on the board that needs to go, not Clarko.

I agree, if it’s Kennett pushing for this then he needs to step down end of the season. We don’t want to have a Pies saga.

Pies???

It's comparable to Melbourne when they sacked Norm Smith.

And hasn't that worked out well for them.

I like Clarko, lots actually.
But a change of coach wouldn't be a terrible thing for the club, the list, or the supporter base.
He can't coach forever, and starting with someone new will ALWAYS be a gamble. There is no sure thing that a previously successful coach at a different club will walk in and have success at ours. We've seen that numerous times.
Committing to Clarko afresh would be committing for some significant portion of time.

I think we'll be better than OK with a switch to Sam.
It's becoming a young list, coming through together and building something new.
Mitch could really drive this thing into a new dawn.

Maybe, but historically coaches that transition quickly from playing to senior coaching don't seem to have worked out well. Although there is only a small sample size of semi-recent examples to go on, so who knows, maybe Voss was just not up to it, and long apprenticeships are not really required to make a decent coach.

Can you think of examples that did work out so soon after playing and jumping to senior coach?

I guess Hardwick didn't have a massive gap from playing to coaching Richmond, and could be about the same as Sam by the time 2022 is over, but Hardwick was also nearly sacked in 2016, so its not like he didn't take quiet a few years to develop into a flag winning coach. I guess we could take a chance on Sam and hope he can develop together with the list...

Sammy certainly seems to have Box Hill humming along quite nicely atm....
We have played a lot of trash sides from the bottom 6.

Since 2001 only 9 teams have won a flag. And there’s been 12 different coaches winning flags in that time. Given how many coaches have been around in the last 20 years shows just how hard it is to win a flag.

There’s a lot of luck involved e.g. Hardwick, Scott and Bevo. Who you have as assistants also matters a lot.

There’s no real point doing comparisons to the past. They only thing that is most important is making sure you get the right person. Whether that’s a favourite son or not.

Not to mention that the availability of AFL listed players carries wildly from week to week making a lot of sides very erratic.
Well, we saw it yesterday.

Gold Coast had how many players who had been drafted into the side to play that day?

Capable VFL players as opposed to blokes from lower grades.

I'm not sure what can be learnt from yesterday's game. Apart from Mitchell having a run and having Morris off a half back flank.

I think this posters Clarko rumour has as much chance of happening as me lining up at full forward for Hawks this week.

On SM-G950F using BigFooty.com mobile app
FFS, play in front & lead at the ball carrier...

Tell Kosi the same thing!

Wait... maybe I should coach?

Further to this, you hear a lot of oppo fans (eg Carlton/Essendon) this year bemoaning their clubs’ lack of ability to lure even half-decent VFL players to their seconds, “unlike Box Hill”. We’ve done this really well and the results speak for themselves.

Mitch can only coach the talent at his disposal but he has one of the better squads to pick from. We need games against the likes of Geelong and Footscray, but the fixture’s heavily compromised this year. Return match against Casey soon could be a decent barometer.

If Clarko has been told I am worried about players who now might seek a trade elsewhere and rebuild takes a lot longer. I hope they have thought long and hard about this
