There are clearly off field issues that are pretty bad but I think when you trade for someone this good, you accept the risk. Tis why there’s only big winners or big losers from this trade.

Melbourne won’t get full value because I don’t think you can for someone this good but they’ll get a shitload
7 years at $1m pa commencing next season.

I completely disagree that Hawthorn isn't a good option. They've invested heavily in youth over the past few years and Sam Mitchell has a really good game plan. They are ready for their upswing into contention. Oliver should be thinking about which team would give him the best chance at success over the next 7 years, not just the next 1 or 2. Pick 4 and Hawthorn's future 1st is a good offer.

An infection in his blood stream?

That is something that would put him in hospital for 5 days.

His a manger said something about visiting him and having his leg up. Not sure you’d do that for a localised infected blister.

You would do it if the infection had entered his blood stream.
Yeah, so that sounds like staph. Which is very unlucky.

The things which devalue him are primarily the off field issues which appear to now be immense but also the length and amount of the deal he is on.

Yeah but do you risk tanking your culture by taking Oliver on given there aren't many old heads around.

Handed us a finals win....

I don’t think Melbournes midfield is the issue as so much as the coaching and structures.

They’re clearly instructed to go down the line, and kick inside 50 to the pockets, and then keep the ball inside 50.

It makes their mids and forwards look poor, when actually they’re doing it to prevent turnovers in the corridor that will likely result in scores against.

It’s pretty outdated in 2023, but it’s coaching and maybe forwards.

Mids are just doing what they’ve been told.

Realistically how many more seasons does Clayton Oliver have at his peak?
What do you think would be the first part of his game that will decline first?

8 year contracts are an enormous gamble and this could backfire heavily in Melbournes face.

I don’t see too many teams wanting to touch this personally. You may find a desperate club takes a gamble, but clubs are extremely wary of monster contracts.

26 at the moment, so I reckon you could expect 4-5 years, barring major injuries. Oliver will likely lose his explosiveness first but even then, he should be a good inside midifelder afterwards.

To be honest, if you think you're a serious shot in that time frame, and you need more midfield power? seems a bit of a no-brainer to push your chips to the table for Oliver.

Can't wait for Harry McKay to get dragged into this by the media as a straight swap options to "fix both teams issues".

Wait, am I giving them ideas? They clearly read BF...

show me where it's been stated that he's getting pushed out the door?

BF at its dumbest best lol
someone is leaking very negative things.

negative things that make melbourne look good.

negative things that make oliver look bad.

This is sport PR 101, leak to soften the ground, change strength of negotiations, colour public perceptions.

It's clear the leak is coming from the club, if it was the player/managers it would have the opposite focus.

No one's making a statement because once that happens you get stringer being pushed out by the bulldogs and the price drops.

This might be the prelude to a market offer or just a pull your head in mate but there's smoke here and a fire somewhere

Exactly so many smooth brains don't get this. It's been the same old issue since Goodwin took over in 2017

cant believe mods have let this thread go on with some of these posts. There is zero confirmation or even any news relating to oliver to possibly be on the trade table. the journos "broke" this news prob been posting on this thread.

What exactly is your issue here; individual posts, or the thread as a whole?

If you have an issue with certain posts, the report function is there for you to use. Bring them to our attention and they will be dealt with.

If it's the thread as a whole...you are not forced to post here nor in any other thread should you choose not to. Feel free to ignore the thread completely if that is your preference.

Clearly this is a significant development over the past 24 hours or so, and obviously we are going to allow discussion about it to take place. We do not need absolute confirmation prior to allowing discussion on a topic.
Many of the threads on this board are discussing players and scenarios that are not yet confirmed. Why would this be any different?

Did you miss the 'Speculation' prefix in the thread title?

Managed to turn somoene elses post into mine there somehow but I think you are asking about my actual post. That's what teams trading for him have to decide and that's the risk they take

Straight swap for Ollie Wines

I assumed Ollie Wines, based on form, was like 32 or 33. But is only 28. Big yikes in little port adelaide town.

Actually, his issues this year has been in the public for quite sometime.

He really struggled this year with his first serious injury and also splitting up with his long-term girlfriend. He's still quite immature for his age and did some stupid things and the club wasn't impressed with his efforts. The club has no intention to trade him and currently he has no intention to leave, however if a club like north offered him $1.5m a year and offered Larkey plus picks 2 & 3 to get him then that may change. But I doubt it.

But feel free to create your own narrative if it helps you feel better about yourself 🤣

Being used as a winger when you are an inside bull will do that. Credit the coach there.

If you have his details, can you please pass this important information to him. Point 3 seems rather pertinent.

Wow. And I thought being a red head was a tough gig before knowing this!

Any reason Melbourne haven't come out and strongly denied these rumours?
