The Houston situation is the outlier here not the Smith one. The trade negotiation for Smith isn't going to be done until the deadline anyway, why bother doing anything until then?

Correct Smith will be at Geelong either on Wednesday night or via the draft.
I think with Melbourne it's more about whether Oliver is willing to take a massive paycut but I don't think it gets done.

How is it laughable to be asking for a top 10 pick for one of their best players?

Well I’m not sure how you could even make the claim he is one of their best players.

He finished outside the top 10 at the Dogs Best and Fairest in both 2022 and 2023 and didn’t play at all in 2024 due to a potential career altering injury.

He comes with both great potential but I would argue even greater risk for Geelong. With that being the case we simply will not over pay on him.

17 + F1 for Oliver is about right, assuming you're absorbing the salary. However I doubt you will and Geelong will be asking for Melbourne to take 250-300k of his salary which then makes it more expensive in picks.

Do you think 17 other clubs are going to use their early picks on him? I think there is a decent chance we'll still get him at 38. If not then oh well, Oliver is a better player anyway and would really fix our midfield if he can get near his best again
