Oh Leppa is replacing Kelly is the big ogre now? 🙄

I love what's happened with the player's we've brought in, the draft picks, Matthew Boyd, the pick ups in the VFL...so something is working, imo.

Whether those people left for different opportunities, too long in the job, personality clashes..who cares? If it wasn't working, it's better for everyone to move on & start fresh.

I'm glad it's Leppa who has remained. Fly loves him & that's good enough for me.

So you think it’s normal for virtually 90% of the senior leadership to leave, some of them disgruntled, 12 months on from a premiership? Interesting

Did I use the word 'normal'.. ?

Wright wanted a position which was already filled.

Bolton wanted an assistant coaching role. Ours were all filled.

Browne our President was never going to re-nominate this year, he'd always said that. Barry Carp will replace him.

Hine's been there for years, done a great job, have no issue with him leaving. Love what Leppa has done this year.

Is that 90%?

We didn't play finals this year after winning a premiership the year before, so where's the problem in a few changes with a new set of eyes & energy going forward?

Houston, Perryman, Membrey, Boyd as assistant coach, draft picks including 2 tall kp.. what's not to like about that?

Big news. Looks like Leppitsch is accumulating a lot of power around the list management and recruitment space.

Given his contribution over two decades, Dekka deserves our gratitude for his services. There's been some big misses along the way, but he was still a pivotal part of building our two premiership lists (2010 and 2023).

We're one of six clubs over the last 20 years to win multiple flags. Part of this can be attributed to Hine's recruiting and list management efforts.

2004-2024 (Premiership Tally)
  • Hawthorn = 4
  • Geelong = 4
  • Richmond = 3
  • Sydney = 2
  • West Coast = 2
  • Collingwood = 2
  • Port Adelaide = 1
  • Western Bulldogs = 1
  • Melbourne = 1
  • Brisbane Lions = 1
Adelaide, Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Gold Coast, GWS, North Melbourne and St Kilda all haven't won a flag in this time span.

Dekka was by no means perfect, and he had his strength and weaknesses but the good outweighs the bad in my opinion when you analyse his tenure in its totality.

Time for a change.

Hine had his hits… but I don’t think he’s irreplaceable nor some kind of genius

His best work was definitely done during the Malthouse era that’s for sure

His last decade has not been stellar, in particular with our prized first round picks.

His specialty is definitely finding good players in the later picks. So hopefully he left us doing some of his best final work

But I think his time had definitely passed at Collingwood

You can tell the entire off season in terms of trade and drafts was moving away from Derek Hine feel.

It had new fingerprints all over it.

21 years, hats off to him
We have won 2 flags in his time there.

However, it’s time for a change and a fresh approach

You keep bringing up on field list changes like that’s at all relevant. Yes, we had 3 draft picks, the topic is about us losing our head of football, president, most senior assistant coach and head recruiter all in a month or two, with media reports at least several of them are quite disgruntled, Leppitsch name has been thrown around as someone causing friction, I don’t think that’s overall a positive but we’ll see.

Hopefully Leppitsch is brilliant and gets people he can work with.

Considering some of those people influence what happens on field, I'd say it is relevant to mention our trades & draft pick up's this year..

Our President always said he wasn't going to re-nominate this year. He didn't want to be an Eddie. It seems like it will be a smooth transition for our next President.

Leppa has been highly sought after by other clubs, the fact he's chosen to stay with us & his influence with those we have picked up this year is clear to see, I fail to see him staying as a negative. If his vision is different to Hine's, so be it. I like what Leppa has done thus far.

Did you read what Tuohy said about Bolton? Perhaps he's not the easiest bloke to work with..?

And yes Wright moved on. Into a role he has no experience in, hence why he's in training at the Blues.

We've retained all our assistant coaches & added a quality new one. Murphy has been given a new role. Fraser has stayed on despite being replaced as the VFL coach.

If none of those people have any relevance to what to happens on field, then what's your issue? I want us to win games of footy & another premiership & if a fresh set of eyes, new vision & energy is the result of this shake up, then yes, I do see it as positive.

I’m surprised at the vitriol levelled at Dekka. Two flags, many prelims, heaps of finals, with lists that he shaped.

That other flags slipped from our grasp during his time (2011, 2018) was not down to him - more like club implosion (2011) and a kick in it (2018). If we’d won one more of those flags, you’d have to describe his period as outstanding.

Sure, he’s had some misses, and his record with top 10 picks (when he’s had them…) hasn’t been all that great.

But plenty of clubs would be highly envious of his work, and what we achieved with him.

Good luck and best wishes to Dekka.

Hine has been fantastic.
Daisy, Pendles, Sidey, Beams - Reid / Brown / Dawes
Man, we could have grabbed heaps more flags.
Then JDG + Maynard

2013 was really the only massive #%^*>
  • failing to trade w Saints to get Bont
  • selecting Shaz + Freeman (one of my least fave picks of all time)

Just personal opinion, I felt we needed a more robust balancing voice from about 2016 in regard to trading / high picks / types of player — but we did play off in 2018 and should have in 2019
We have had so much more success than other clubs
- wish he could have continued in a co / or consultant role

I too loved the 2024 Trade period - felt so different to 2023

Dekka has finally left the club. Pop the champagne.

Yeah, you say that now …

… but I don’t think too many of us will be popping champagne when it’s announced tomorrow he’s joining Wright at Carlton …

… or wherever.

Because he is very very highly regarded in the industry. And he will turn up at another club.

I hope we have a good replacement lined up, because despite what some on here say, he was very good at what he did.

I'm fearing the power that Leppa is apparently accumulating at the club, but to be honest, Derek Hine should have left the club about 10 years ago. Recruitment managers, like AFL coaches, have a finite lifespan. Since Jordan De Goey he failed to recruit anyone of note in the top 20 draft picks. Our recent premiership success is due to father - son picks and trades. Nathan Buckley should have snared at least one premiership at the club while Pendles and Sidey were there. Lousy draft picks scuttled Buckley's tenure as coach.
Not sure why you’d make excuses for Buckley over lousy draft picks after saying Hine “failed to recruit anyone of note in the top 20 since JDG”.

Hine has literally had only 4 live picks in the top 20 since 2014.
Stephenson won the rising star, and was a massive reason why we nearly snatched a premiership in 2018. Not Hines fault he self destructed.
Henry looks a 150-200 game player. Not Hines fault he’s a mummy’s boy who couldn’t hack the drive to Geelong.
Macrae looks a miss.
Allen looks extremely promising.

So we have one genuine miss on talent ID out of 4 players selected.

Buckley had plenty of talent to work with. He just wasn’t a great coach outside the one year where he was literally forced to do things differently if he wanted to keep his job.
