Hine was one of the best in the business and unless we have someone of equal standing lined up it's the latest eroding of the team that helped us secure the 2023 Premiership. On paper it looks like a shit show with no Wright, Bolton, Hine, Leppitsch (in his assistant coaching role). Browne will soon depart also.

As for people already lauding Leppitsch in his role as list manager let's take a closer look.

1. His reputation has been earned in the role of assistant coaching. This is what we originally targeted him for.

2. He has no (or extremely limited) history in professional junior talent identification. Unlike Hine.

3. He's freshly minted in his role as list manager. He'll remain unproven until he isn't. We knew what we had in Wright when appointed.

4. Houston fell into our laps after Melbourne imploded off field and Carlton decided to prioritise the draft. Either of those two things don't happen then Houston is likely playing elsewhere IMO. Let's not forget also how Noble helped us acquire pick 13. Very very happy for it but it was dumb luck that all the stars aligned. Perryman will be a nice solid addition but let's not pretend it wasn't the pull of $800,000+ a year and playing for the club he supported as a kid that was the deciding factor. Membrey was surprisingly not wanted by St Kilda. Happy to have him but not sure we had to engage in a bidding war to get him.

5. As for the draft some people seem to be rating it (and by extension Leppitsch) simply because we took a couple of KPP at pick 47 and 50. I would suggest they spend more time asking why these players lasted until this stage and then accept if just one make it (including Hayes) then it would be a great outcome for such speculative picks. While the perception is Hine never drafts talls in reality his draft history is littered with KPP selections. The trouble is a lot were taken in the range of Cochran, West and later, it's why most fail at AFL level, most are quickly forgotten and why peoples expectations should be tempered once again.
At the same time no would would appoint Leppitch if they didn’t think he wasn’t the right person for the job.
He will have developed networks and linkages through his many years in the AFL in various roles; It’s not as though they’re appointing a work experience kid in the role.
All teams / organisations need change. The over used term applies here: “time will tell”

Wasn’t Billy Morrison picked under Judkins? I’m sure he that Hine was not responsible for that unfortunate selection.

Hine had just joined the club at that point, but I think you’re right to say that Judkins was still our main recruiter at the time.

I don't have a problem with us giving Leppitsch a shot a list management but list management is different to junior talent identification and recruitment which is the role Hine filled and in my opinion he did it better than probably a dozen others at other AFL clubs.

As outlined in my original post I think a set of circumstances mostly outside our control were the main reason we landed the prized Dan Houston. The best we could say for Leppitsch at this stage is that he was prepared to swallow any pride and give the farm to get the deal done. That was the right call. As for Perryman and Membrey he clearly wasn't such an arse-clown they were put off joining.

The real test for him starts now however, we're an old 23, lots of retirements to come in the coming seasons and we wait and see whether he can convince players like a Rowell or LDU to come over and help fill the void.

Nice graphic, who stole Nathan Murphy's cup?

I can't believe the dribble people talk about Hind.

The evidence is right infront of you.

He has been hot garbage for years.
It’s fine if you don’t rate him but there’s no need to be a campaigner about it.

You would think our recent failure is a combination of both bad drafting and talent development.
Our recent failure? We got a premiership just over 12 months ago ffs.

Yeah, you say that now …

… but I don’t think too many of us will be popping champagne when it’s announced tomorrow he’s joining Wright at Carlton …

… or wherever.

Because he is very very highly regarded in the industry. And he will turn up at another club.

Let him join Carlton - honestly couldn't care less.

If Carlton gave him the mid season draft portfolio then he might do ok in that. His days of National draft are done imo.

Feel free to come back and quote when he proves me wrong.

Will always admire hine for what he did in the 2005 and 2006 draft.

Pendles, daisy, reid,brown,dawes.

One all time AFL legend, one superstar who was a game wrecker in his prime and a premiership kpp spine.

Is anyone of similar calibre to Hine, say a Jason Taylor type, even out of contract?

Hine put together two Premiership lists (could have easily been more) so placing our fortunes on some understudy would be a great unknown and risk.

Are we even going in that direction or are we going to employ a bunch of new talent scouts who'll report to a panel including Leppitsch and Fly?

Christ we haven't even appointed a GM of football yet and it's almost Christmas.

I hope we know what we're doing.

It’s unsettling to see so much management change at the club one year one from a flag.

Our elite coaching group got us to a flag in 23 but half of them changed their roles in 24. Worth noting Leppa’s interview about his relationship with Bolton a few months ago. Very strongly hinted that they were extremely stretched with Wright’s sabbatical and it brought tension.

Add to that exec level changes, board changes and in particular a complete overhaul of the football department which seems to be out of our control considering we had no ready made replacements for them and clearly some clashes with Wright and Kelly’s responsibilities.

I’m very pro Hine. We gave him terrible draft hand after terrible draft hand by trading our picks (or simply being too good or not committing to a full rebuild) and he made us multiple flag contending teams out of them. Some of his biggest blunders like Freeman at pick 10 I suspect were strongly influenced by others in the club (I can’t be sure but remember feeling the sub text of a Bucks pick there). For all of those complaining about a lack of key forward, think back on the last flag winning teams including us and see where they come from: Daniher traded, checkers mature age defender draftee, Cameron Fa/traded, Lynch FA, B Brown traded…

I hope whoever’s next is a proven performer.

I wonder if Dekka saw the writing on the wall with Fly's "players, not picks", and Leppa's draft focus on talls.
Fly and Leppa seem to be a take it or leave it team - on results so far we'll take it.
As for Dekka's recruiting, he's had hits and misses like any recruiter, so it's easy to be critical and/or complimentary.
Thanks Dekka - all the best.

Correction, I was referring to our recent drafting record in the first round, which most people see as a failure.
We’ve had 1 top 10 draft pick in the past decade, and 3 top 20’s in the open draft (not NGA or FS) in the last decade.

Stephenson was the top 10 pick, and there was zero wrong with the talent ID, he just completely went off the rails and wasted his talent. The other 3 are Henry - 17 (will play 150+ games, Macrae - 19 (fail) and Allan - 18 (promising but to early to call).

The rhetoric that he’s had a poor recent first round drafting record is horseshit peddled by people who are too lazy to understand that we’ve had no top end draft picks to work with for a decade.

At 45 you have listed Jarrad Blight, is that correct or should it read Jarrad Blair premiership player?

Let him join Carlton - honestly couldn't care less.

If Carlton gave him the mid season draft portfolio then he might do ok in that. His days of National draft are done imo.

We haven’t seen a lot of the players picked up in the last 3 drafts, so we can’t really judge those.

The 5 years prior to that:

ND 2021
  • 4. N.Daicos (boom)
  • 45. Draper (bust)
  • 49. Murley (bust)
  • 52. Harrison (TBD)
RD 2021
  • 2 Dean (TBD)
  • 17 Chugg (bust)

ND 2020
  • 17. Henry (boom)
  • 19. Macrae (TBD)
  • 23. McInnis (TBD)
  • 30. Poulter (bust - although 28games in 4 seasons isn’t terrible for a pick 30)
  • 31 McMahon (bust)
  • 44 McCreery (boom)

RD 2020
13. Ginnivan (boom)

ND 2019
40. Rantall (bust)
45. Bianco (bust)
55. Ruscoe (bust)

ND 2018
13. Quaynor (boom)
29. Kelly (bust)
77. Bosenavulagi (bust)

ND 2017
6. Stephenson (boom)
39. Murphy (boom)
50. T.Brown (bust - although 28 games from a pick 50 isn’t terrible)

How many recruiters have done better with such a rubbish set of picks available to them?
