Why would we get a Football Manager who doesn't actually know anything about football lol
Good point.

I wonder if the football department boss necessarily needs high level AFL specific experience, or, are those skills transferrable from a code such as NRL. I am not advocating this, just noting it is possible that you could be better off with a top level outsider, putting forward a new perspective, compared to someone who has only seen AFL and possibly more narrow minded.

Fans bang on about bringing successful people into their club.

Ponissi has been at one of the most successful Australian sporting organisations for almost 20 years.

The vast majority of us have no idea about the machinations and nuances of the various administrative roles.

From having heard him on SEN for a long period of time now, and given from all reports we are chasing him to some extent, I assume he'd be a fantastic person to bring into the footy club; irrespective of any apparent lack of AFL knowledge.

What does a footy boss do? What part of their role requires them to know much about football?

They don’t have to do anything on the field - we have players to do that.

They don’t have to teach skills - we have assistants to do that.

They don’t have to come up with game plans - we have a senior coach that does that.

They don’t have to do player recruitment - we have a draft and list management team that does that.

The footy boss is an executive role, a strategic role. Their job is big picture. What is the vision / mission? Do the staff understand and have buy-in to the vision / mission? Yeah of course it’s to win games of footy and Premierships, but that’s no different to the other 17 teams and that’s the ‘what’. There’ll be a strategic element of the ‘how’ to go with it (eg: “Side by side”)

This is very normal in industry (eg: when Holgate went to Australia Post what did she know about delivering the mail given she’d come from a vitamins company?)

Advantages of recruiting from outside of the AFL …
  • Wider selection pool
  • Possibility of attracting quality people who come from an industry that doesn’t pay as well as the AFL
  • Probably lower risk of them being a micro manager
  • Cross pollination of ideas from other disciplines. If you have a candidate who has achieved huge success by running an innovation program, why wouldn’t you want that person at your footy club?

Great post. Does anyone know what the role of footy boss is precisely and whether coming from a different sport would be a drawback? I like the left-field thinking. Fairly sure Wade also came from Rugby and he's been an excellent appointment.

And the Storm are a very successful club. He could bring fresh ideas etc.

Not to mention, we have players in the AFL who don't have much (some none) of a footy background.. 😉

I'm sure it's less of a stretch to be a successful footy manager from a different code.

Ponissi has been in a senior role at a successful sporting club for a long time, so he's really good at his job.
Given that the Storm are based pretty much across the road, you'd think he's picked up a few clues about AFL anyway.
If he were to get the gig, I'm sure he'd do a great job.

The New Magpies (specifically Ranald MacDonald) appointed Peter Bahen as general manager in 1983(?).

Bahen had worked at the Australian Ballet. He was sacked from Cwood after a couple of years.

During his short tenure he commented "running Collingwood is like being Mayor of Beirut".

Collingwood as a brand would be closer or more to 500 million.
Biggest sporting brand in Australia.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This is the issue people have with Ponissi as a candidate. He’s a perfect fit because that role is effectively the CEO of the football department he’s not developing and implementing a system and he’s not in charge of talent acquisition.

His role is to manage the people that do those roles and he knows what a high achiever looks like better than anyone having worked beside the best coach of any Australian sport this century. The values and cultural standard he’d bring with him would make GW look like an amateur! The only question would be can he handle Kelly?

They’ll just sack Kelly and bring in Maxwell!

Doesn't know anything about football? He was on the panel that selected the coach of the Richmond Football Club. Btw he spent 20 years as operations leader at one of the most successful sporting institutions in Australia. Would be a huge acquisation for Collingwood.
