Looks like rival clubs are targeting Fin Macrae according to the Herald Sun

Wouldn't be surprised if he left and not at all surprised that teams would come after him. Unfortunately for him it was probably his year to break into the team but we're in premiership mode and in came Tom Mitchell.

It's unfortunate timing for Macrae. He's depth but at the same time we saw when Adams went out for a week and now JDG that we don't have faith in him yet as a replacement either.

We will need to have another inside mid knocking on the door soon as Taylor Adams and Tom Mitchell will be both done end of 2025.

Could Callaghan be that player?

God damn people are being harsh on AJ after one bad game where almost literally everyone played poorly

I'd be disappointed if we lost him
Which comments have been harsh? I feel I’ve been most forward in discussing him as a potential list casualty and I’m more than happy to walk you through it further.

Yes the timing of Titch’s arrival hasn’t worked in Fin’s favour.

There’s a few replacements that come to mind, that haven’t really proved anything at AFL level but are in the same age bracket as Fin.

Dev Robertson, Campbell Chesser, Sam Flanders and Elijah Hollands could be worth looking at. Callaghan would be a dream but depending on how GWS go over the next couple of years I don’t see him leaving.

If we wanted to replace Fin with a more established player I’d be looking at Jade Gresham despite current form.

This concerns me. We have no developing inside mids outside him. Carmy won’t make it. Will leave a big hole that will need to be addressed. They take time to develop.

There's this guy called Nick Daicos who could develop into an inside mid if we wanted him to be one...

I think he’d be wasted in that role tbh, if we are talking in an under extractor, He’s to good a user of the ball. We’ve put in a lot of work into macrae, he’s been solid in vfl, developing him for another team would sting. He’s contracted, if a team wants him they can pay up

Ultimately it depends on price. He’s a VFL player for us so if he explores his options good luck to him because that’s the modern game. If we pulled a Henry with him and flipped him for something that landed a senior player that’s a win. He’s also contracted and we rate him so I’d have faith the club can work a reasonable deal out if it went that way.

It’s more a pattern of bad games against good opposition. Fair chance we may encounter a good opponent in the finals

Drops his head and doesn’t put in any effort if things don’t go well early.

Draper?

Allegedly Reef?

We already have some developing mids aside from Fin - Draper, Allan & potentially even McCreery, Bianco, McInnes, Harrison.
Of course, there are no guarantees.
Of that group, I think Allan has the most upside.
Hopefully Fin stays. Dekka talked Fin up in his interview.

Callaghan's under contract so not leaving any time soon. I think the answer is simple: play Macrae. Give him 5 games, rotate players out otherwise we're losing our future and that great draft of 2020 looks silly given we'd be relying on Reef and then speculative later picks.

Allan, outside. Draper, outside. Bianco, outside.

McCreery could play mid - he's strong enough but Harrison is too crafty to be in the middle. I think the faster play of the AFL suits Harrison more than the VFL. He was not our worst player in either game he suited up for.

Thomas would be an awesome bargain basement pick up, my only concern is that he’ll be one of the first poached to go to Tassie in 2026.
He's originally from Sydney. Moved to Tassie when he was 13, picked up footy then because there's no rugby league in the state and went through the North Launceston footy factory (which is surprisingly underrated).

Macrae is also under contract until the end of 2024.

Slightly left field option as a midfield target (in the event a Fin leaves etc) I think would be Jack Bytel from St Kilda. Is OOC and never really been given a good run at the saints, only 23 years old and is a big bodied mid that can win clearances and is generally pretty clean with it by hand from stoppage.

He'd come pretty cheap - but the concern is why he wasn't rated at the Saints? St Kilda fans that I know of, rate him and are equally unsure why he's seemingly been a forgotten man at Moorabbin. They've had some good inside mids such as Steele, Crouch and Ross, but at some point over the last 3 years you'd think he would've been given a better run than 21 games, of which he's been the sub in 9 of them.

I’m not sure it’s based on one game. But more an opportunity to move on a guy who’s 27 next year who we basically got for free and will always float in and out of games, in a position we have plenty of depth and use it to better our list profile especially if West Coast in particular are interested which could provide a pretty good return.

Reef has played poorly in his last couple games in the AFL side.
Maybe he's been a bit too anxious to do well, because he has ability.
And maybe our coaches are still trying to find out how best to utilise his specific strengths & weaknesses.

Yeah, played poorly against the Dees, as did most of our F50 group it has to be said, but still could have finished with a couple of goals. Takes those opportunities and he elevates his performance.

We could have drafted Callaghan in 2021 had we not given up the first rounder, but he’s gonna be a great player
