At VFL level he seems to be better than all of them, doesn't he?

He can also realistically play defence, as he has done often at reserve level. I think with the injury concerns that we seem to have in the three guys you've listed, we can afford to have another depth player there. Especially if he can help out down back too. I'm not clamouring for him, but I think there's room.
Is he cheaper than Ruscoe? A better clubman?

Yeah I wouldn’t be retiring off players if we win the flag, I’d hang on to all of them and put everything into trying to go B2B.
It might be useful to explore some positional tweaks for some of the veterans - having a strong squad should allow us to do this throughout the season.

Some I'd like to see explored:
  • Sidey to half forward / forward pocket
  • McCreery on-ball either as a pure tagger or run-with player when Mitchell requires a chop-out
  • Maynard into the middle, swapping with Pendles at half-back
  • Pendles to half-back in a dual quarterbacks role with Naicos
I also expect one or two retirements in the event we go all the way this year with players looking to finish their career on a high.

This is why the entire "going to the draft" is a complete fallacy these days.
Especially those going at Hine for his recent picks (from another thread).

Reckon every clubs list would look something like this.
With the numerous other ways to bring in talent.....drafting 18 year olds is clearly not the best way and far too speculative.

SSP & MSD in particular (where you can draft on exposed form in season or at training) will have taken 2-3 draft picks away from the ND each year (just a pure guess!!!).
Coupled with easier player movements means draft picks have far less worth than they used to.
Which is anecdotally backed up by clubs happy to part with 3rd/4th rounders and give away picks to free up cap space.

ND will be overhauled in a few years IMO.....always takes the AFL a few years to catch up on new trends.
I suspect what they'll eventually realise is that adopting a model seen in America where kids play at a semi-professional level BEFORE entering the AFL is a good idea. It's ridiculous that clubs read so much into what's seen at under 18 level. Daniel Gorringe spoke about how he was drafted to Gold Coast after only a few good underage games. Maybe an extreme example but 18 year olds seem overhyped and state league stars underrated.

Howe, WHE and Sidey are prime candidates to retire early if we win the flag.

from what Ive been told a few days back, They view is that Ryan, Allan, Reef and Macrae have potential to be in our top 15 players going forward, so unless someone pops up that would be in our top 15, we wont be active as previously thought.
Wright doesn't want to bring in list cloggers at the risk of losing our genuinely talented kids.

2024 is the one where we'll be more active.
Agree with that list, although I think Harrison will join them.

Anyone think we're going to do anything notable on the trade front this year?

I can't see it. We'll have no retirements to free-up dollars and list spots. We also have very few uncontracted/frustrated players wanting out, other than perhaps Fin Macrae and Bianco, neither of whom I imagine would attract a pick much lower than about 40.

So I reckon we'll do very little this year and will set ourselves to be bigger players in 2024, when perhaps someone light Naughton could be gettable.

Any alternative views?
I seriously doubt Bianco will leave. We'll re-sign him for another year, unlike what PieSource thinks.

Ruscoe is delisted unfortunately, Kelly gone, Wilson gone, two at the draft.

2024 will be a big year for us trade-wise.

I do feel we need to keep one half back defender. Because if all of bianco, ruscoe and kelly go... all we have left outside the 23 last week, is Ryan/noble/draper?

Dylan Stephens has requested a trade to North

I'd be keeping Bianco. Maybe Ruscoe.

Hard to get a read on Murley. Stats wise, he doesn't produce anything amazing each week but I suspect he's rated for his IQ and ball use. I have heard a few whispers he might be on a list next year.

I don't think we should trade away our first next year to attack the higher picks this year. We need more capital next season, not less.

Was always unlikely to come to a club that has a version of him playing as is with no guarantee of senior games.

Stephenson's comment about no midfield time has really come back to bite him. North has an excess of midfielders now.

Sanders and Reid to potentially join that list. Maybe we should hit them up next year and pluck one out.

The way Pendles and Sidey are going it would feel premature for either of them. Maybe Howe, but he’s still providing value without an obvious replacement candidate. WHE isn’t slowing down and just played his best game for us in years. Elliot’s a bit banged up but still one of our most dangerous forwards…

I’d like to see some of the older heads managed through the season to increase longevity I.e. 15-17 games per season, with their future replacements getting blooded in their stead.

We’ll be coming off back to back flags looking for a third.

I reckon if we win the flag we should go full tilt at winning it again and again. I reckon we manage the retirees at 2 a year or thereabouts. I think we can work our way to adding two a year and still being good
We don't want too many players retiring all at once.
We need to transition in younger players by stages.

Apparantely when Clarko came in, they both agreed he is a better forward than midfielder. So he has given up on that idea, after realising its ideal to consider, but when it comes down to it, some players are better in a certain position.

Will Phillips is one who might struggle to get a game behind Reid, Wardlaw, etc.
He's one I would enquire about.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment you don’t want a massive drop by exiting too many players at once. The difference between going out in a prelim and winning a grand final is a bees dick - if the older heads are better than their would be replacements - IMO if you’re in the ‘window’ you hang on to them for as long as that’s still the case.

If / when you realize you’re no longer a challenger, that’s when you start to potentially get a bit more proactive on that front.

Pendles won't go past 2024 & he's one who might retire if we win the flag, although the lure of 400 games might tempt him.

Pies fan too, there was a video leading into the draft where a photo of him sleeping with his pies teddy and footy. The nephew of ch 9 reporter Alicia Muling.

He may not, but you’d be a brave man to put a ceiling on how long Pendles could potentially go on for.

Say we do go B2B, do you think he’d retire if still playing good footy with the prospect of breaking even more records and getting a 3-peat?

He’s contracted for next year so I’d be pretty surprised if he pulled the plug prematurely.

One I'd target. Actually wrote a piece today on the childhood teams of players we have on the list. That I know of, Quaynor, Daicos x2 (media overhyped Carlton), Bianco, Wilson, Kelly, Moore, Hoskin-Elliott and Howe were all boyhood fans. Some talent in that list. Darcy Cameron was probably a fan. Rest of the list is here: .

I think it's a good idea to look into players who supported us growing up as they know what it's like to support Collingwood, it has meaning to them and isn't another guernsey and they unlock even more passion for the game. Family may also encourage them.

A player who has played exclusively as a forward kicks more goals than one who has played 50/50 forward and back, you're right.

Beveridge's failings are not Buku's. Do we hold Sam Darcy purely at fault for his disappointing season too?

I would happily let Begg go for Buku personally. I think Steene is the better prospect than Begg, who has failed to impress me almost weekly.
Questions that need to be asked:

If Buku has kicked more than 2gpg this year in the VFL, then why isn’t he getting games? What part of his game is not up to scratch in the eyes of the Bulldogs hierarchy? What are his defensive efforts like? What’s his tank like? Can he run out a full senior AFL game with no issues?

Whilst there are genuinely some players that get overlooked by their clubs despite deserving opportunity, I’m wary of the idea of bringing in a player who by all accounts would be competing with 3 other players on the fringe for the same spot, if he’s not a clearly superior player, otherwise we’re just gathering depth. Given he’s unproven at AFL level, as it stands Buku is currently in the gathering depth category, so it’s a pass for us in my book.
