I would. It would be infuriating to see the club overlook a clear best available talent for a lesser local boy just because they’re afraid he might leave.
Back ourselves in to make an environment where kids want to stay, just like we always have.
Yep and the reality is that we got more in return for Oliver than the average pick 17 is worth two years after drafting. Picking him didn't even have a bad result in the end - the bad results will come if we pick blokes that are less talented.

Interesting to see if we sit tight w 19+33 or package both to move up a pick or two to grab a player we really rate
Then just a wild swing w a very late pick
I'm skeptical of us only taking 2 in the draft. I don't think we're that likely to pick up 3 by the other avenues.

12 days ago a senior club official told me that Murphy was going through all the tests. That the club benchmarks all players at the start and end of each season, and that our medicos and their practices are up there with world best.

The current theory is that the multitude of minor bumps are a greater contributor than the occasional major bumps.
As such, he didn’t expect the GF bump to be a concern.

Was told Murphy is concerned, but they expected him to be able to play on.

Didn’t our club medicos give a clearly concussed Murphy the all clear to return to the field during the grand final?

One way to look at Henry is he set up a premiership. We took him for two years, developed him a little then on the trading table relieved Hawthorn of the burden of Tom Mitchell who won a flag for us.

Yes.
But I think that’s just milestone point in the broader discussion.

Don’t recall anyone mentioning that.
It was mentioned and even Jen had some reservations from his time at the Gold Coast.

I feel like Oleg was one of the most misunderstood players in the league until he came to Collingwood. Always forgotten at the Tigers and underrated, moved on to Gold Coast where they didn't really care about him and then finally unlocked at Collingwood.

Sometimes you need the right coach to bring out the best in you, and that will reflect your form.

I’m aware of his history. Look forward to you linking posts with drug references.

True, but I’m not sure that justifies the trade we got for him, it was still very clearly unders given the strong start he’d made to his career.

It had a less than desirable result. Nobody should pretend we wouldn’t have gotten the Mitchell trade done without Ollie being involved. We minimised the damage, that’s about all we can be happy about, but I’d still glad the club backs themselves to keep these types rather than overlook them for lesser players.

I'm not saying it justifies the trade price. I'm saying that the trade price (even if unders) justifies taking the risk on talent, even if it comes with a go home risk - we didn't lose on drafting Henry - even if his departure was a loss.

No, our club medicos gave the all clear to Murphy after he passed the concussion protocols. He started experiencing dizziness afterwards, aka delayed symptoms. Our doctors aren’t wizards, they can only do so much.

Yep. And if we’re honest, the trade price probably would have ended up being fair if it was any other team than Geelong he was going to (except maybe Essington)

Don't understand why another team would go for senario 1.

Pick 19, the last 1st round pick of 2023 for their 1st next year, which is likely much better than 19, plus a pick 50. How does that work?
I assume it’s probably already been addressed given you posted early Saturday, but it’s probably dependent on who’s left on the board and the club wanting the player. Next years draft is going to be as compromised as this years at the top end so if say Sydney were keen on someone late in that 1st Rd they may swap a F1 for that “19”.

Nobody picks many Qld boys because 90% of them are tied to northern academies. The only reason we got Beams was because he refused to align himself with GC when they were establishing themselves in preparation to enter the AFL, and Hine had his work cut out convincing him to do that.

Beams drafted in 2008 and GC didn’t enter comp until 2011, so don’t see how GC could possibly have claimed him.

Six years on from Beams’ decision to ignore a lucrative three-year deal from Gold Coast it is hard not to think what might have been had the Southport teen became a Sun.

Beams would enter the 2008 national draft, not prepared to wait out of AFL football for two years until the Suns’ inaugural season in 2011.

Basically would have had to sit out until 2011.

The one who I think would be both an absolute fit and gettable is LDU.

He’s already a really good player in a horrible team and would be a star in our system.

Agree about LDU.

Noah Balta has unfulfilled potential. Could be a star with the right coaching and a bit more consistency.

Agree, Begg has the ability to make it as a defender, still a kid and just needs to believe that he can. Certainly worth a big punt - Murphy in the end made it there despite early on not really showing it.
We were considering Murphy as a first round pick whereas Begg is a rookie. You'd assume that Murphy was considered considerably more talented and likely than Begg to make it as an AFL player.
