Would Wingard go on the LTI list? Does that mean it opens up another spot for mid season?
I like the way you’re thinking, very devious.
We could pick him up as a DFA and put him on the LTIL.
Then pick up another player via the SSP or MSD.
PS: I think I used all the acronyms 😉

The LTI list no longer exists it’s now the inactive list. Ignoring that we’ll almost certainly pick up a legitimate injury of a similar long term nature between now and the SSP closing I very much doubt the AFL would allow us to knowingly create an exploit to have an extra player on our list in 2024.

I like Doedee but for $750k + forget it! I hope we have some juicy trades lined up for next year.
As I mentioned to Freo supporters who were adamant that they’d get band 2 compo if they held Schultz to next year, we gave him a reported $650k contract. Doedee got $750k and that was band 2, the threshold will likely go up again in 2024.
As it stands they made out like bandits getting our future first and a second rounder, but I guess we just need to get our heads around the fact that Wright will pay overs to get the deal done if he feels the list fit is good. It’s not like we can complain much about his work to this point.

....

Wouldn’t have tried an around the corner from 40 metres

When the rest of the side was lining up straight (and kicking them from outside 50), Ginni tried to be cute.

Would take a fit Wingard over Ginni any day of the week and twice on GF Saturday.

Logic would dictate that we can't complain but this has never been an impediment for us.

We’re taking 3 picks into this draft same as last year. For a practical example who’s offering more across 2024-5 Joe Richards or Chad Wingard? I’m not excited by the thought of him holding HH or Macrae out of the best 23, but I think our chances of going back to back are better with him on the list than any alternative at pick 60 odd in this draft.
Honestly if Macrae or HH aren’t established in the 23 (not fringe) by the time Wingard is fit to play then we won’t be losing a whole lot anyway.

I’d be in the no camp for Wingard. It gives me flashbacks to recruiting Daniel Wells.
Can you explain to me how picking up Wingard for a nothing pick, with Hawthorn paying out the bulk of his contract (yes, they’re obligated to pay the difference since they delisted him under contract), is the same as offering Wells a 3 year $600k (probably closer to $700k in todays money) free agency deal?

On fire today Pexy

Bring this game to the dance floor tonight and there will be swooning

It’s a unique opportunity. If it wasn’t for injury Wingard likely wouldn’t be available at least in this manner and as you say it also doesn’t deny younger players time to establish themselves in the 23.

If one of the younger players takes that opportunity it might be harder Wingard to get in, but that would be a nice problem to have.

The timing suggests the now closed dfa window was the most likely listing opportunity though.

What’s with Wingard meeting McRae and Wright and undergoing a medical at Pies HQ?
Especially if his preference is to stay at Hawks who have committed to him…makes no sense.

What also makes no sense is why would we even be meeting with him on the flip side when he won’t play at all in 2024 with that Achilles injury….

The whole thing is rather unusual.
He wasn’t doing a medical. I heard someone with the initials JG posted slightly used, not needed racing silks on Facebook Market place. Pick up only.

Exactly!!

This would be a Markov style minimum chips style pick-up of a player Fly and the coaches have history with and rate.

And as per your other post, if he becomes available after the bye, it means guys like Macrae, Reef, HH have plenty of time to earn a place in the 23.

We hope they come good as you want younger players being picked ahead of senior guys...like back in 2010 when Sidey, Beams, Macaff held out OBree, Lockyer and Medhurst...but if they are not up to it having Wingard as an option for second half of 2024 would be great if we are gunning for another flag tilt.

Agreed. And we will only be using 2 picks on kids. The third, if not Wingard, will be another mature type or SSP selection
The melts here are hilarious

Lol. I think I've been talked into it. Obviously Fly & Wright know what they're doing, I haven't doubted them before.

If the medical was positive & he costs us virtually nothing..it's making sense.

He had a very good end to the season before he did his achilles. With more quality around him he should be even better, assuming he recovers well from injury. We won't be relying on him anywhere near as much as the Hawks have done.

If he costs barely anything I don't see why you wouldn't take the punt.
