Agreed. I think the AFL would really benefit from some analytics nerds getting publicity. The NBA has people like Kirk Goldsberry and Thinking Basketball which are really interesting.
I suspect that some clubs are heavily into it. But outside of clubland it's just people looking for stats that confirm their already existing view.

I also think that Aussie Rules is probably in the too hard basket. The US sports would be a lot easier as the set ups and events get repeated over and over again.

So paying $600k for someone who likely has 2 years left?

I'd rather pay $600k and a first round draft pick for someone of Hopper or Taranto who are peaking and can give us longer service.
Surprisingly TM's Footywire stats are better than TT's and JH would have to go back to his 2019 form ( pre injury) to match TM.
Assuming TM's body is ok, then he will be an asset, as our kids develop.

I cant see why they wouldnt be anyway
If they were available from another club or in the draft there is no way we would draft them now
After recent form I'd take a punt on CB, if I was another Club. In fact I think he'll get picked up if delisted.
If he gets his confidence back he has the skills and attitude to make it.

Agreed. I hope he stays but know that's about as likely as North Melbourne winning this year's flag.

Picking up Tom Mitchell could help us in a few ways. He improves our clearances even without the a grade ruck option. He potentially allows us to use De Goey forward more. Just as important he could neutralise most of the money we might have to pay a club for Brodie Grundy’s wage because Hawks would possibly pay a chunk of his. This would open up the salary cap space even more and allow us a real crack at a big fish in the next 12-24 months.

If it absolved us of paying out $300000 to another team and Mitchell came at $700000, while we would still be blowing a lot of money on a somewhat elderly player, it's not that much worse than some of the projected scenarios I have read in here.

Of course, we've not had a lot of luck with drafting 29 year old inside mids. I would be checking that Mitchell brings with him no talent for nor interest in creating art work works of any kind.

Whilst I squirm at the mention of mental health, I'd be going over his with a fine tooth comb. I am sure we have some suitably qualified folk in white coats who would leave no stone unturned in determining that his mind is operating on all available cylinders.
Sorry for the intrusion but any equating Mitchell with Beams is way, way, way off.

Tom has been an absolute pro in his time at the Hawks. On and off the field. Zero risk in that regards.

He would be good for you guys I think. If you simplify his role into just being an in and under distributor to feed the likes of Pendles, etc there would be few who could do it better.

I'd be interested in data on the outcomes of Grundy's clearances. Lots of miscued sky balls that gain little territory and end up with the opposition is my perception. Are the additional clearances that we get beneficial?

I've said it before and I'll say it again but I wish he would handball as the first option. If he could feed our good users he'd be weapon. We need to stick him in circle and marking drills all pre-season (if he stays).

Any love for Aaron Francis, could be a good swing option.

we do need a proper ginger, could come good in the right set up.

I thought about Francis awhile back and came to the conclusion he's not a good fit. Fantastic interceptor but cannot defend an opponent. I think with key defenders coming in Murphy shifts to a similar role he'd occupy.

Beams name being mentioned a few times with the Mitchell speculation...

IIRC we got Beams back on a 4 year deal, starting 2019 which would end this year. There was conjecture as to whether his retirement to mental health would be covered within a salary cap, i.e. was it a career ending injury?

I believe we were to still pay out his salary?

That said my memory is poor at times and I could be completely wrong here.

Also not sure how Langdon's payout went but his 3-year contract 2019-21 contract obviously technically finished last year.

$300k for a player who we viewed as slotting in to our best 22.

How much do you think the Hawks offered the likes of Lynch? They sure as hell aren’t paying him $300k. And frankly, no ruckman of Cox’s quality is going to be lured to Collingwood to play as depth. That’s just nonsense. If they’re capable of playing as an AFL standard ruck, they’ll be going to a club that needs a number 1 ruck, unless they desire the slow death of their career.
For a depth ruck, you essentially have three options.
1. Draft one and develop them yourself (we’ve already done that with Begg).
2. Trade a young developing ruck in from another club that is likely to cut them/is excess to their needs.
3. Draft a mature age ruck from the VFL.

None of those options are going to cost more than minimum chips.

Are those options just for us? Because Geelomg and Melbourne are both pursuing option 4: trade for an all Australian ruck who has become available simply because the club he plays for gave him a too big deal.

You should probably back track on that discussion for context.

I'd prefer to keep Grundy and bring in Mitchell.
A renegotiated Grundy, discounted Mitchell (for a future 2nd), our first round pick (Elijah Hewett or Matthew Jefferson maybe), plus the trio of McStay, Hill and Frampton. That would be absolutely fine for me. Try and package our picks in the 40s for something in the future.

I would prefer Dunkley, Hopper or Taranto over Mitchell (in that order). But that involves more going out
