There's been a few games on Fox Footy in the last week from around 1990 and it reminded me of what a gun Tony Francis was. He probably wouldn't even get drafted today at 171cm.

Or for his temperament!! He was a 'lad' and brought with him some real 'mongrel'. Anyone that gets suspended in their first game for kicking has got a certain amount of 'panache'!

I keep reading this talk of a career in the midfield cut down by injury but don’t agree.

He was glorious in the midfield after his knee and foot injuries. Basic career was he had 1st 3 seasons mainly as a HF then went to the guts for the next 8 seasons. He had 2 of those seasons badly affected by injury . His knee in 85 and foot in 87. In 88-89 he dominated the midfield more than he did at any time. Won a B&F, AA and State honours.

1990 with Shaw, Millane, Brown, McGuane , Wright Daicos and the addition of Francis and Russell we had an overloaded midfield and underwhelming forward line

Matthews took the 2 best mids in the group, Daics and Browny and put them forward and the rest is history. Daics career really mimicked Lethals and I reckon that was front and centre for that decision.

Agree with this. Was definitely hampered by injury 85-87 but came roaring back in 88-89...

My views on Daicos the midfielder are probably not all that popular. No doubt he was an elite A grade midfielder of AA quality. But as a midfielder I dont think he gets a game in the best Collingwood game Ive seen - at least not in the starting 18. As a midfielder I dont think he was quite as good as Bucks, Swan, Pendles or Wayne Richardson. Id probably have him no 5 on my list, and frankly and controversially Im not sure (as a midfielder) he was all that much better than McGuane or Price, who also were excellent.

But as a small/medium forward Daicos was peerless. The best Ive ever seen. For Collingwood nobody comes close - miles better than Didak, Medhurst, Krakouer, Leon......and across the VFL/AFL history a fair argument to say he was the best of all time

Lethal has said that if he knew just how good a forward Daicos was, he would have played him there from the start.

I think 2nd best. Lethal was the best

Lethal's final game was the 1985 Grand Final. The Hawks got thrashed but he still managed to kick six goals. Makes me wonder why he didn't play another season.
He only kicked 1 goal that game. 56 for the season as a 33 yo. It was time

Matthews was basically playing as a full forward more than a roving forward and this young kid called Dunstall was ready.
He kicked some goals by marking like all of the great small forwards but his play was that of a small not a full forward for mine . Same as Daics. Here is a highlight reel with plenty of late career goals, he was dynamic once the ball hit the ground.

He is my all time favourite non Collingwood player to watch along with plugger

I meant being used as a focal point more than how he got the job done.

Yeah I’m a bit the same with midfielders, set a very high bar. Unless you have lightning speed to break away from contests and leave opposition in your wake you are not a midfielder.

Swanny is the last mid we had. Pendles I respect but he isn’t a midfielder to me.
I'll let that one through to the keeper.

For impact and skill, albeit for a short period, I'd back John Greening as the best I've seen - was only young, but such a sweet mover with impeccable disposal - Chris Judd was as close as I've seen to him.

Agreed regarding John

Spectacular mark and could literally hit the ground running almost flat out. Good feint and a superb delivery.

Like Daicos he could literally tear a team apart in 15 minutes.

What happened to him was a tragedy. It would have been a little easier to accept if it was an accident.

So Treloar stopped being a midfielder after his double hammy?

Don’t know where to post this, but Jack Lukosius played in the forward line for the Suns in their training session.

I was only 10 when he was king hit....agreed a sublime player, but wasn't he predominantly a winger? ...thats primarily why i didn't include Greening in the discussion, happy to be corrected if Im mistaken on this... I just consider wingers play a different position to a centre square midfielder, and if we were including wingers than Millane and Rowdy should also be included in the discussion

I'm not much older than you, and most of my memories are based on TV vision at the time rather than regular game attendance. I loved the way he ran and his carry with the ball was exceptional, so he could easily be considered a wingman, at his best, he was an on-baller playing as a ruck rover/centre. He may have played some games early on as a wing/half forward , I'd suggest it would be fair to consider him as a mid-fielder.
