I get that they have advantages in terms of the falcons network and recruiting blokes back to country Vic, but its the continual plucking of underrated gems from elsewhere on top of it. Dempsey from Carey Grammar, Holmes from a Melbourne club. Being willing to pay up for Stewart and Egan as mature age state league guys. SDK from wherever. They just get gems from everywhere. Then also turn guys like Bowes and Kolodnashji into solid players. They just seem to be ahead of the game in recruitment and developing and then Scott and their coaches is ****ing good as well.

****ers.

well as president of the derek hine fanclub, how do you explain geelong's competitive advantage?

Cats have got their own "Academy" down here. The Falcons, Private schools and local leagues all funnel their best to Geelong and the player managers and recruiters involved down here are well versed in getting their boys home even when they're picked up by other teams. Its a production line but Wellsy's spotters also do their job with the VFL and local leagues really well punctuated amongst their list. They've got the country boys covered, the "high Maintenence looking for a low key" and the young family men wanting to settle down amongst country surroundings and excellent schools.

Its a pretty easy sell.

We all can understand the lifestyle considerations for players like jeremy cameron who want to fish and stand in cow dung, but it's the advantages that wellsy's spotters have over derek hine's tea and crumpets brigade which SR doesnt understand.

excellent rant....but I wasnt talking about looking at handicapped people...

i was talking about footballers who werent ready to play AFL footy when their fellow 18yo's were being drafted...

This is what I was responding to:

"We've had a couple of hits but we need to do more. I'm not sure Derek likes going to games watching mature aged footballers....If we going to dump a few players off the list, we might use the lower parts of the draft. to pick up more mature players and/or indigenous players in the WAFL and SANFL or similar levels.

THe other opening is irish players. I usually hate this kind of recruitment but it's desperate times."

It was strange to be suggesting we weren't looking at this avenues.

Someone brought up sof

Is he a chance or his injury ruined everything?
I think that boat has sailed tbh
Had a stress fracture in his foot from april, was meant to be back playing in July, but never did. Was never back in full training. Most I saw of him was a couple running sessions, so I'm assuming he had a setback.

I think Cat's have a competitive advantage in recruiting and/or development over the entire league. Like I've said I don't know why they have it outside of the Geelong network and country Vic advantage.

In terms of Dekka, he's been head of recruiting whilst we've recruited two very different premiership teams. That alone suggests he's run an effective team. But in such a competitive industry with a quick staff turnover to have survived so many changes in our hierarchy and football department speaks a lot about how respected he is by footy department specialists.

And whilst I think the Cats have had a more effective recruitment team, I don't subscribe to the theory that you're either the very best or a dud. Gary Albert or a spud. We've also had an effective recruiting team and have consistently overachieved within the league during Dekkas time, which is difficult to do consistently as you get a draft handicap the more successful you are.

Even though it may be unlikely one thing I hope we are doing is talking to bont who is a free agent next year and also butters who is out of contract in 2026.
You'd be talking to half the Port list. Their supporters just can't handle no longer winning their comp every year. They just feel like a club that could implode at any stage and have players wanting out.

Wouldn't mind a crack at Jack Macrae who was a elite midfielder until Bulldogs acquired Treloar. Plays very similar to Treloar costs half the price can get a clearance. Starting as sub constantly would be a walk up start in our midfield.

If we cant land Davies I’d take him on the cheap. An upgrade on what we have.
