If you look at the Hawks, they have had 4 top 6 picks over the past 4 years.Agree entirely. We have forced ourselves out of the draft. Which it is what it is.
But we do have to go after these borderline fringe players and hone in on them. Its a clearer picture than taking a kid in the draft at 40. At least we can see what we are potentially working with at an AFL level. Plus its managing our age profile a bit more. By not going after vets with 2 to 3 years left.
The bolded player is a Pies supporter too.If you look at the Hawks, they have had 4 top 6 picks over the past 4 years.
Only their latest who was pick 3 gets regular games and looks top end.
Granger-Barass, Ward, McKenzie have been average.
It’s a combination of smart trading and free agents (to cover specific needs/gamestyle) and later picks which have helped them play finals footy for the 1st time in a long time.
There’s another ‘Bobby Hill’ out there, or in the Hawks case a D’ambrosio, that we should be looking for this year for a later pick.
Given the number of first round picks Richmond will have this draft, maybe we can trade next year’s 1st for a top 10 pick this year.
Who isn’t?The bolded player is a Pies supporter too.
Shit I hope not. Bytel & sully are AFL trash and not young either.we’ve now had CFC posts on Sully, Long + Bytel
Wonder if that precludes them from delisting in 2024
Our recruiting dept has been operating on a significantly lower budget than the rest of the comp for about a decade or so now from what I’ve heard, so this is welcome news.Interesting that according to an article in The Age today, we are shifting footy department spending from the GM position to recruiting. Wright came at a premium and they’ve decided the money is better spent on recruiting.
Can’t argue with that!
Sack my manager. You are an AFL footballer looking at more gametime or you are looking at returning to Melbourne or you are a p*ssed off Norm Smith Medalist realizing you made a big mistake by marrying the Melbourne Football Club. You want to play finals. But you are not looking at just 2025 moving clubs for one year, you are looking for the security of a decent contract, you also want to go to a club on the way up or who will challenge regularly. Collingwood come knocking.... They have a poor draft hand in 2024. Like their salary cap will have to kick the can down the road and trade their first for now. Will be in a similar position next year & likely the year after unless they do something drastic
You look at what the Pies can offer and the age profile of their squad (under 30) from 2026, because you do not want to go to a club like Richmond where they will down the bottom like NM, WCE and Hawthorn were for years. You see:
Allan (22) - Midfielder
Bytel (26) - Midfielder
JDaicos (27) - Midfielder/ HB
NDaicos (23) - Everywhere
Dean (25) - Defender
Demattia (21) - Midfielder
Eyre (24) - Tall defender
Harrison (23) - Small Forward coming back from ACL
Hill (26) - Small Forward
Jiath (21) - Defender
Kreuger (27) - Tall Forward
Lipinski (28) - Forward
Long (23) - Midfielder
Macrae (24) - Midfielder
McCreery (25) - Small Forward
McInnes (23) - Forward
Parker (24) - Small Defender
IQ (26) - Small Defender
Schultz (29) - Small Forward
Richards (27) - Small Forward
Ryan (22) - Small Defender
Sullivan (29) - Midfielder
Smith (21) - Ruck

Do they though. For some reason Grundy's manager didn't stop him from going to Melbourne when the rest of the football world could see it wouldn't work.Your Manager suggests the Pies are not a good choice in the immediate term

Agreed. It's about having the resources to identify the less obvious talent, as Geelong have done for a long time. Our recruiting dept has been operating on a significantly lower budget than the rest of the comp for about a decade or so now from what I’ve heard, so this is welcome news.
100% correct we are the biggest club in the land stuff the taxThe question is why?
Cannot we just go over and pay the tax?
That’s not a question Carl. You assume the manager is an idiot then, my question to you is assume he's not.
We just won a flag.
IMO the club has a few years grace to get us heading in the correct direction.
All clubs go through down periods, the times of continually staying at the top have ended mostly. (E.g. Carlton brown paper bags, cap rorts, COLA, Hawthorn zoned drafting. Accadamies and AFL gifted draft hands to expansion clubs and North Melbourne are still around however.)
I'm not gready 1 flag every 10-15 years will good enough for me.
Managers will steer their clients to where the money is. Regardless of on field performance Collingwood will always be a relatively attractive option purely because of the exposure and sponsorship opportunities that follow. You are an AFL footballer looking at more gametime or you are looking at returning to Melbourne or you are a p*ssed off Norm Smith Medalist realizing you made a big mistake by marrying the Melbourne Football Club. The fine isn't so soft. It's a 200% fine. The question is why?

They’re out thereWho isn’t?
The fine isn't so soft. It's a 200% fine.
I don't know if that fine then gets included in the next footy department numbers, but if t does, it's pretty easy to see why clubs don't have a strategy of exceeding the cap.
This isn’t actually true, we’ve just picked the wrong KPP’s later in the draft and they’ve been busts.
ND and RD - Gault, McLarty, McMahon, McCarthy.
Cat B’s - Richmond, Keane, Tohill
I’ve probably missed a couple. Of all 9 late ND, RD and cat B KPP that I can think of though our only 2 hits have been Cox and Checkers. Yes there are KPP that can make it who get picked late. But for every Calsher Dear there’s probably 10 late picked KPP who are busts too. That’s just the way it is.
I don't think i am greedy but just once in my life I want to see a Pies dynasty! 1990, 2010, 2023 is not quite enough.
I'td be footy expenditure directly related to the footy department, occurring in the next season. Why wouldn't it be counted?Never heard it carrying over...
They did increase it but no mention on carrying the can down the road to the following season.
Who cares if it's 200% have a limit the club knows it can afford to hit.
1 million for example. The club could easily afford to absorb it.
