Agree entirely. We have forced ourselves out of the draft. Which it is what it is.

But we do have to go after these borderline fringe players and hone in on them. Its a clearer picture than taking a kid in the draft at 40. At least we can see what we are potentially working with at an AFL level. Plus its managing our age profile a bit more. By not going after vets with 2 to 3 years left.

If you look at the Hawks, they have had 4 top 6 picks over the past 4 years.

Only their latest who was pick 3 gets regular games and looks top end.

Granger-Barass, Ward, McKenzie have been average.

It’s a combination of smart trading and free agents (to cover specific needs/gamestyle) and later picks which have helped them play finals footy for the 1st time in a long time.

There’s another ‘Bobby Hill’ out there, or in the Hawks case a D’ambrosio, that we should be looking for this year for a later pick.

Interesting that according to an article in The Age today, we are shifting footy department spending from the GM position to recruiting. Wright came at a premium and they’ve decided the money is better spent on recruiting.

Can’t argue with that!

IMO the club has a few years grace to get us heading in the correct direction.
All clubs go through down periods, the times of continually staying at the top have ended mostly. (E.g. Carlton brown paper bags, cap rorts, COLA, Hawthorn zoned drafting. Accadamies and AFL gifted draft hands to expansion clubs and North Melbourne are still around however.)
I'm not gready 1 flag every 10-15 years will good enough for me.

We just had Hawks, Geelong and Richmond dominate long periods of which they walked away with 3 flags in thier reign.

Pies also really have done a good job with 2001 - 03, 2007 - 2012, 2018, 2022 -23/?.
Strong and successful periods.

We buukt a dynasty side in 2010 imo but never capitalised off it. This was largely done through the draft to get the core and then as it matured added the missing bits (Ball and Jolly).

The other years we aimed to pinch them never built to truly be a dominant force for 5 years plus.

Managers will steer their clients to where the money is. Regardless of on field performance Collingwood will always be a relatively attractive option purely because of the exposure and sponsorship opportunities that follow.

I don't know if that fine then gets included in the next footy department numbers, but if t does, it's pretty easy to see why clubs don't have a strategy of exceeding the cap.

This isn’t actually true, we’ve just picked the wrong KPP’s later in the draft and they’ve been busts.

ND and RD - Gault, McLarty, McMahon, McCarthy.

Cat B’s - Richmond, Keane, Tohill

I’ve probably missed a couple. Of all 9 late ND, RD and cat B KPP that I can think of though our only 2 hits have been Cox and Checkers. Yes there are KPP that can make it who get picked late. But for every Calsher Dear there’s probably 10 late picked KPP who are busts too. That’s just the way it is.

Yup our issue is the opposite we don't INVEST early picks on them.

No top 20 picks on KPP since D.Moore.

I don't think i am greedy but just once in my life I want to see a Pies dynasty! 1990, 2010, 2023 is not quite enough.

Need to invest much heavier into the draft and luck out in the RIGHT draft to do that.

I just hope by going full ham after 2023 we don't blow Nick Daicos best years with nothing to show for it.
