A kick of at least 40m to a 50/50 contest is rated an effective kick regardless of the result. A kick of less than 40m must result in retained possession to be rated effective.

A lot of the best kicks have mediocre efficiency stats as they also often get used for inside 50 entries and go for passes rather than bombs to the hotspot.
We also use them to create set up forward stoppages from the boundary so sometimes that low efficiency kick or chaos ground ball is deliberate. Just don’t tell the AFL
