you loved The Peoples’ Princess ?
Only after she died. Before that she was just another upper class, 5%, undeserved wealth, blah blah blah, that he could hate on.

I do see enormous value in the monarchy (for Britain), I appreciate the value of a leader who is above politics.

As for criticism of the monarch living such a life of privilege. Sure, they have unimaginable trappings of wealth and many things us commoners covert … but pretty sure the monarch would be saying the same of our lives. They can’t just decide to go watch the footy like we can. Bill Clinton had a saying about the life of a US President. “The White House is the jewel in the crown of the US penal system”, and the British monarchy would be much the same. Tough gig living in that world and maintaining any grip on reality.

I never understood why Elizabeth II is such a revered monarch. Part of the point of a monarch is to be a leader of culture, style and values. We can look through periods of British History, they’re named for the monarch on the throne, and we can see what the period was about. I just can’t see what Elizabeth II represents, what she stands for, how her period will be defined? What leadership did she provide? Maybe I don’t see it because I’ve been in it and have no point of reference.

And I think it’s nuts to have a monarch reign so long. Anybody under the age of 70 hasn’t known any other British period than the one under the reign of Elizabeth II.

I’ve seen more evidence of leadership from Charles with his advocacy for environmental and conservation causes, and support for British manufacturing.

For me, I felt Elizabeth II had lost it post Brexit. Sure, she should be above politics, but the country had already voted, and they could have done with a bit of leadership from their monarch at the time … but she was totally missing in action. After that I didn’t see the point of her. Maybe she should have abdicated decades ago.

Anyway, onto King Charles the III. Hopefully he has better luck than King Charles II.

As for the monarch being the King of Australia, well, at least we now have a Head of State who was educated here. I do think we should and will be a republic one day (I voted pro-republic in the referendum) but I wouldn’t automatically vote for a republic in another vote. The model matters, and I would rather stay with the status quo than have a model where there‘s any chance of somebody like Clive Palmer being voted in as head of state.

The one constant in the life of probably 99% of the world today.

You have to take a moment and realize that we live(d) in a time on this planet where one person had such greatness and will always be remembered for as long as this planet turns

So she’s achieved Legend Status?

I’m looking after grand children in Sydney, and now my granddaughter is lecturing me about the monarchy and the upcoming coronation.☹️

Oh, you must be so proud!! 🤣

Could be worse I suppose, they could be lecturing you about the exploits of Buddy Franklin :)

And it keeps going. The 10 year old is now quoting the Queen’s ‘achievements’. It’s horrible!

Are you ok?

I may not be a popular view but I like the idea of having heads of state born to the position. The concern for me is that elected or appointed officials might have lied and cheated to get the job.

+1

I have been a republican for my entire adult life. That said, I acknowledge that Queen Elizabeth was a dignified and stable presence in an increasingly insane world.
With Charles ascending to the throne, an Australian Republic should be a fait accompli. The one obstacle now is that the bandanna-wearing former Rugby player is the current head of the Republican movement. He is a divisive and polarising figure. We will be tied to not so Great Britain's apron strings for another twenty years

Oh well, the 10 year old can probably also tell you all about Gadigal lands. Just means that they’re becoming a well rounded individual :)
