And there you go -- in the preview last week, I suggested there were lots of questions to be answered about the Mighty Magpies. The game against Geelong has answered almost all of them. Our clearance work is better thanks to Mitchell. Bobby Hill will make an impact. Our game plan holds up and is well suited to our players, and it holds up even under severe pressure. Jordan DeGoey is likely to to rise to his talent level and dominate the competition. Most importantly -- we are one of the best teams in the comp. Yes, yes, it's only one game in a long season, but it was enough evidence for me. Let's bask in the glory a little.

Still, there was one huge downer during the stellar night. The greatest mark the game has seen, Jeremy Howe, flew kamikaze-style into a spoil. He shot through the air horizontally, like a missile, and when he crashed do the ground he shattered his arm. This is a heavy blow. Howe has defied age. He leaps like a cat, he possesses incredible pace, he intercepts to start shredding counterattacks with his two-sided elite disposal. He helps organise us with his onfield leadership. We can only hope he's back before too long.

Which means.... step up Billy Frampton (sorry Kelly, I've given up on you for the moment). Murphy takes Howe's more intercepting role and Frampton takes Murphy's more lockdown one.

We still have enviable depth which will hold us in good stead for a while yet.

Opponents: The Power

The Power are a strange team. A newcomer to the competition, there's no traditional hate between us. I don't harbour long-held vendettas against them for rodent-like, deceitful, morally repugnant, behaviour (yes Carlton, I'm pointing the bone at you). But they do seem to possess some odious personalities. Kane Cornes is a professional stirrer, a kind of shock jock of football, minus the politics. I hated him as a player, but now he's more like an annoyance, the buzzing of a mosquito in my ear at night. And their President, the loathsome, middle-brow, out-of-touch, egotistical Koshi.? A morning TV presenter as President? I feel sorry for Port's coach.

What about the current team? They have a great interceptor in Alir, a good key forward in Dixon, wild-cards in Georgiades and Rioli, some inside bulls in Wines and Powell-Pepper, some elite young talent with Butters, Rozee and Horne-Francis. They were excellent at home against a highly-touted Brisbane, doing the Lions down and by doing so, proving their upper level is elite. And yet, and yet, I still don't quite know what they are. I suppose another way of looking at it is that they're pretty good at everything. They look like they'll be battling with a bunch of teams for a top-four spot.

This game then is going to ask a few more questions of us: Will McStay actually be the player we hope? He was great in the pre-season but his performance against Geelong was disappointing. Will the Cox/Cameron duo continue to fight the good fight? They were solid against Geelong but here they should be better, before the real tests come. How will the backline go without Howe? Will our better clearance work hold steady?

The Washup

The game's at the MCG, we're in stellar form, and the Power are surging but can we trust them? About as much as we can trust Kreepy Koshi and Shock-Jock Kane.

The Pies by 13 points!

WHE clangering it up is an outrider stat though. He's usually good with the ball in hand.
Agree. Thought he did some things better than usual, but his usual bread and butter went missing.

I think McInness will get a full game though and WHE seems the most likely to replace him as sub. Can't drop McInnes out of the 23 after that, or play him sub too often - particularly as he's one who needs to build a tank.

Sub or not, bloody hard to significantly improve endurance running(because I hate "tank") once the season begins. The weekly need to recover and get up for the next game makes it difficult to chuck in massive mileage in-season. And that's the only way you can build endurance.

Was wondering what the fitness staff do with a sub like Reef on Friday. Now that subs will always get some sort of a run, wonder how they approach getting work into them. Does 38% TOG mean he got a special bonus session on say Saturday?

That's all a bit beyond me. I'm still stuck in the concept of "match fit" and blokes getting fitter for games through playing games - as the season goes on - which obviously isn't the case with modern training regimes.

Me too. Warning: a bit of imagination coming. Reckon the nebulous concept of "match fit" also includes a decent proportion of players regaining touch and becoming more accustomed to the game day pressure/tempo that they can't replicate in training. They definitely get a "training benefit" from matches - and they still do plenty of running during the week. It's just that their weeks have to include recovery after matches and "resting up" before the next one so their training opportunities are somewhat reduced compared with the off season where they can just flog themselves more regularly.

There's always talk of clubs/players doing periods of increased training blocks. I reckon that is there the fitness blokes would earn their bikkies. Identifying which blokes are carrying fatigue and need to go a bit easier in certain weeks(and the opposite), etc..

I'd imagine Reef would have been doing some additional running on the G after the game.

If anything, they'd chuck him on a treadmill back at the rooms. But I'd be surprised if that happens at say 11 on a friday night after he has cooled down.

It’s what they’ve traditionally done with substitute players who get limited tog.

It's actually a good game for Frampton to debut as Dixon is a decent match up and a good test.

He then plays against Lynch the week after (i am guessing that was the game last year whereby GW started hearing alarm bells).

Think Port will be very hard to beat this week.

Full strength , very fit and Hinkley in a contract year.

We will need to be at our absolute best to win
Agreed. Strong, big bodied midfield with some dangerous pacey players and their forwards will stretch us with dixon, marshall and either georgiades/finlayson (either of whom are great nominees for a case of average player that collingwood makes look like wayne carey).

Imo their backline is a bit of a question mark, and they tend to come up short in close games so hopefully we can pip them. Don't remember much of our last game against them (remember daics got stitched up with a free againt before the bounce and that's about it) but reckon they will be red hot saturday.

There’s a suggestion that with Howe out, Frampton should come in and take the second-best forward, with Murphy given licence to play as the interceptor.

I’d flip that plan. Murphy is surprisingly good as a 1-on-1 defender even on bigger forwards, whilst Frampton is suspect. Supposedly Frampton’s an excellent interceptor and very good kick. So why not let him play to his strengths?

Georgiades is a player that The Gimp was extremely keen to draft. Be interested to see why as I don't believe I have ever watched him play.

Going to the richmond game next weekend with my partner. Question: If i get my friend to buy tickets through MCC for us, does he have to be there with us or can we just rock up with the tickets? Website says he has to be there but someone told me he didn't... just wanting to make sure before we purchase :)

Your friend can purchase visitor tickets for you, but guests are admitted only with their hosts and the host must accompany the guests at the game, and the host is responsible for the guests behaviour. If you rock up and there is nobody there with you who is a member and has bought the tickets and they notice that, they will not let you in, and may discipline the member who bought you tickets then didnt accompany you as not only is that a breach in itself but there has been a lot of issues with members buying visitor tickets then selling them at a peremium (selling visitor tickets is also a breach).

Basically, you may if they are lax get away with it, but more likely is you dont get past first base and it may end in your friend having their membership cancelled

I can't like this post enough, the amount of neg for Murph and Hyphen is off the charts.

Sure Hyphen gave it up twice I think and Murph was a bit slow to start, his 2nd half was pretty good, left his man to make a possible goal saving spoil and hyphen gave us good link through the wings.

The way some on here carry on, you'd think they're plants from another team.

Hardly droppable.
I think it goes further the other way with Hoskin-Elliott. Some are far too desperate to support their hard support for players like him they will overlook frequent errors and poor performances under the notion they don't want to be wrong. When he plays his one good game in 6, they flock. They don't afford the same levels of faith to other players

Murphy is a very good defender and played an outstanding game on Cameron after Howe went off. With Howe out, he will play every game and probably would have with Howe in anyway.
