I'd give Leon as just about our best player, he was back to the 2009 version of Leon, where he could play just about anywhere.

yea it was great to see him playing like that.. will be a force this year. plenty left in him, he looks fit and hungry.

bring back Brad Dick!

Keefe wasn't 'solid'. He was excellent, and IMO looks like he has more potential than Nathan Brown. I thought he was every bit as good as Ben Reid. He looks just as good in the air and defensively but has more poise and thought going forward than Brown. If he keeps up the current rate of improvement, he may make it difficult for Brown to get back in next year. What's really surprising is his ability to keep up with players despite his size. Being as tall as he is, he will really have a good ability to mark over most key forwards he comes up against, or certainly make a spoil with his reach if he can keep up with them. It's almost like the big ruckman that drops back to take a safe defensive mark.

He ought to be putting genuine pressure on both Tarrant and Reid for a spot, not simply a decent backup option.

I thought we played rubbish, but it was only a practice match. We pretty much played one quarter of football, and then proceded to butcher the ball going forward. Definitely lucky to win. A few players showed some good things, but Keefe the biggest postive to me, just in terms of what he looks like he can provide the team, that being a genuine option as a key back, and judging by his height perhaps even an ability to pinch hit in the ruck.

Seemed to me we were a tad underdone for this game. Taking nothing away from Sydney at quarter time they looked down and out, yet to their credit they forced their way back into the game and pretty much dominated the contest for the next 2 quarters. Only in the last quarter did our senior boys click up a gear.

Looking at some key stats they beat us in contested possessions and tackles albeit by slim margins - unusual for us. The inside 50s we dominated.

Individuals who impressed me

Andrew Krakouer - tackling, smothers and clearance work superb, disposal top shelf also, looks set for a senior berth to me.

Lachie Keeffe - went down back and looked very comfortable, clean skills and very quick for such a tall man.

Thomas, Dale - looks so driven and focussed, a real leader out there now.

Swan - what can you say, boy some of those set shots - wow.

Neon - reasonable game from him.

Beamer an excellent display all night - kicking crucial goals.

Ball - the usual in and under stuff.

Of the kids Bolton, Fasolo and Sinclair all showed some promise.

Taz - he'll be better no doubt - probably still nervous and getting to know our style.

Overall good hitout to clear out some cobwebs

Didn't think Tazza had such a bad game, Goodes kicked three and one of them was a down field free kick. Tarrant spoiled quite a lot and as mentioned by Richo Swans only took 3 marks inside 50 for the whole game.
Bolton looks promising, just not sure about his love of short kicks.
Sinclair is as brave and mad as they come, has some nice evasive skills too, will be a player.
Keefe was the one that impressed me the most, decent mark, reliable kick and has poise beyind his years.
Daisy and Beamsy equal BOG's for mine.
I'm usually a defender of Wood but tonight he got absolutely smashed in the ruck and around the ground, needs to grow a set in a hurry.

Our midfield was either short of decent rotations, lazy, ran out of legs or all of the above after qtr time. Bombing it long and not carrying and pushing forward, also thought a few players were terrible when streaming towards goal - kick the goal or work it out FFS, when you have fastbreaks you have to convert, not kick it into a Swans player running at you...

Our guns got us over the line in the end, decent hit out.
We had our best back 6 on in the last quarter and best mids played right to the end so we were very keen to win.

Off to Perth we go I think

PS what's Daisys Brownlow odds? Really amazing player now

Gotta feel for either GC or WCE coming off the shorter break if we do play one of them, especially if its GC considering they have to travel to perth on a short turn around.

As for Beams smiddaz, you could be right his conversion rate may well be better from set shots because he does tend to have flying shot's at goal that are low percentage. But I personally don't think he's quite as safe as a pendles or sidebottom mainly due to his kicking style, he throws the ball around a lot as he runs in for goal which means he can be hit or miss, anyway if he improves we can all rejoice.

Just my quick thoughts on the game in particular our fringe players:

Davis played well and I can see him playing down back during the season. He doesn't have to find the ball and shake off an opponent, instead the ball is dished off to him and he can use his run and good skills to set up play. He can read the play as well and has less pressure on him to produce.

Krakouer looked to have picked it up a little bit more. Still not 100% on potential IMO but improved and is starting to make an impression on the team.

All the kids (as well as Shae) looked capable of playing their role without putting pressure on the senior players. Meaning if we have injuries they're going to be able to fill the role and the team won't be weaker for it, but going off tonight's game they aren't pushing ahead of others on the list.

Wood looked fairly good early and then faded. Showed he can at least keep the opposition ruckman accountable while doing some nice things for the Pies. Looks to be using his body more too which was nice to see. Really he backed up last rounds performance.

Bolton could be pressing for elevation if he keeps it up, although I'm not sure he's ready for a game yet.

Keeffe has a very strong overhead mark. He didn't get much of it but kept his opponent/s quiet too.

All the senior players looked solid at the very least. Swan, Thomas, Beams, Shaw all looked comfortable and strong. Clokes hands were strong. I'm not really liking Harry playing up the ground but like Lappin said they're trying to create versatility.

We did well to win that tonight, thought Sydney had lot closer to their matchday team, and seemed more experienced out there.

It was great to get games into so many peripheral players...and the good news was that all of them showed they could hold their own this season, if needed.

I'm no Wood fan at this stage, but I thought he was more competitive tonight, and didn't look passive like he often does, encouraging.
Krak will be fantastic and improve us.
Leon looked a different player to last year, pace and assurance was back.
Great sub option probably.
Keefe did good things, I didn't notice him as much as you other guys, but happily take your word for it.
Leroy looked like a bear who'd just emerged from hibernation, and was dazzled by the light... a shocker!
Reid gun.
Sinclair really impressive, as was Bolton.
Cloke, Harry, Maxy, Taz, all very rusty. Caf less so.
Beams impressed me heaps, I haven't rated him quite as highly as others here, but liked his game a lot tonight, esp last half.
Thomas is just a star, gutsy, hard worker, leader, classy.
Swan..good comment above re second gear, looked very relaxed which possibly helped his goalkicking.
Wellingham very quiet early, got into it when the game was up for grabs
Shae could play ones if injuries .
Gee, add Jolly, Pendles, Sidebottom, Dawes, Didak, Blair into that side, maybe Goldy, will be a classy side, pretty hard to beat.
I'm not expecting much from the umps this year, I think often top sides have a slightly different 'free kick threshold' to lower teams, almost human nature to want to even things out a bit.

My comments;

Davis - stellar idea to move him back. Surprised they didnt do it more last year. His best footy is when he is in the middle / Wing / HB ala 2009. The only issue I have with him there is that he doesnt hit the contest as hard as the bloke he will replace in there. In saying that couple of very nice defensive efforts were on show. Lets see how he goes next wk

Fasolo - Kid has got a ticker and is a ripping kick. WIll take time but is a good get. Some nice efforts late in the game.

Bolton - Geez he can play. My brother was telling me about this kid being a bolter last year and I thought he was on crack given where he was coming from. How wrong was I. Speed, tough, great visiion and a super kick. The comparison with Cousins is interesting.

Sinclair - Looks good but just needs to hold his feet in the contests. His soccer pass out wide was nice.

Shae - look he aint going to play senior footy unless we have a run of injuries but he showed a lot more than I gave him credit for. His vision was very good.

Keefe - wonderful job to all the Development coaches bc this kid has something v few big fellas have. Ability to read the play, run and execute. Should get game time and will replace Brown in time.

Wood - Much better than last wk and very much worth persisting with.

Krak - Now some of those efforts were simply incredible. Particularly the clearance stuff. He is a player!

Beams - Nice to see him go well. Played well late in game which I liked.

Reid & THomas - Will become stars this year.

Harry and Heath - HBF pls coaches. Heath is more adaptable than O though.

Tarrant - makes some mistakes but is going to be solid

Brown - terrible

Wellers - got better.

Swan - lovely!

As I've said before Sinclair has alot of Jaxson Barham about him.

Both are frenetic, tackle hard and blessed with speed but decision making and kicking really leave alot to be desired.

He did slot a nice goal but I don't think he will make it unless he improves on his kicking and decision making big time.

Despite not playing a game yet, Josh Thomas is miles ahead of him.

Sinclair has always reminded me of a poor man's Dale Thomas.
