Same as Hawthorn making 7 grannies in a row (and 8 of 9) during the 80's. Way better! In the 20's, the "amateur" days, didn't players go to work Saturday morning before the game because they was stuff all money in the game then, train just twice a week and have a drink and smoke before and after the game!! Still the Colliwobbles have to have something to hang their hats on....they've only won all of one premiership in near 50 years so they've got nothing else to cheer about (haven't the piles of runner-ups been funny though....damn Essendon in 1990).
Makes it great achievement, NOT a greater achievement. Need to think about it more deeply than that. Consecutive premierships are way harder to win in this day and age with the draft, salary cap, training, intensity of the game etc...In the old days when footy was in its infancy you could get away with talent alone. It was simply mark and kick with much lower scores and much simpler skills. The game these days is very professional with the based on hard running, intensity, a multitude of different game plans and much more individual player scrutiny from the opposition. ANY slight drop off in run, intensity and passion will see a side really slip irrespective of their talent. Hate to disappoint you but Brisbane with 3 consecutive premierships/4 consecutive Grand Finals, and Hawthorn of the 80's with 7 consecutive Grand Finals (and 8 from 9) were much greater achievements.understudy said:Why do those things make a difference???
Doesnt it make the four in a row a greater achievement???
Certainly a fantastic moment and record - will never be broken in the current environment (even bris lions with all the concessions and benefits they received couldnt achieve it - justice i guess) !!!!

From a supporter of a club that has earnt one AFL wooden spoon and is worryingly starting towards a record second AFL spoon...understudy said:Before you port supporters get carried away, we are talking afl moments here not sanfl, best you stay out of this thread
There used to be a nationally sanctioned competition before the AFL. It was called the Championship of Australia. There was also interstate games between representative sides of state leagues, and there used to be State of Origin games. Now according to your logic the South Australian side would never win any of those type of games....... hang on a minute.johnnyhoward said:... The SANFL is, and always has been a sh*tpot little competition that doesn't compare to the VFL/AFL....
The first time all 6 interstate teams were in the 8 was the greatest moment in AUSTRALIAN Football history.understudy said:The AFL have asked for nominations for the greatest moment in Australian Football history.
Collingwoods Four Consecutive AFL Premierships - a league record - has to be a fair chance - im putting it forward as a nomination.
Anyone beat that????

Take 2 players out of the Lions side (about $600,000) and they'd stil beat Collingwood in those GF, especially the second one. If think something in the amateur days of 1929 ranks better than the achievements of the current day dynasties you really are biased, rationalising and dreaming. Sorry, but get into the real world. As I said great achievement but certainly not the greatest. Making succesive Grannies in 2002-3 with an average side was probably a greater achievement in the modern era.understudy said:you play by the rules of the day - look at the 3 ridiculous flags handed to brisbane*
pies four consecutive flags - afl record
Be realistic, it was a far weaker competition. That's why players left to come to Victoria to play VFL in those days. Same as footballers coming from any league whether it be WAFL, SANFL or the even the country leagues. Then you were able to take that far greater professional development back and use it for state-of-origin games. Don't kid yourself.Count Zero said:There used to be a nationally sanctioned competition before the AFL. It was called the Championship of Australia. On the contrary, this is exactly the time to be dwelling on past greatness.Ljp86 said:I'm not jealous, i'm just saying that those premierships were a long time ago and you can't keep dwelling on how great they were all those years ago, when now they're are not doing so great.
understudy said:Disagree mate, four in a row is the record consecutive flags and the greatest achievement of all time - no concessions either
Of course it is. Everything in life is greater in the modern era from medical science to sport science, sports training and preparation and thus football....too silly to work that one out. I know you're a Collingwood supporter, so we do make allowances but surely you're not that dumb....poor colliwobble!!! Suppose it's all you've got to hang you're hat on I suppose with only one flag in most of the last 50 years. I suggest you quit while you're behind.understudy said:Poor jim, thinks everything in modern era is greater acheivement than anything in the past. How disresptful to our forefathers
Very myopic.
He didnt see it so it wasnt any good.
